The rebadge job is even worse than I thought - literally the only differences are a faux grille insert and fog lights up front, and no red across the whole back.

If this is indicative of Subaru's long term strategy with BEV, the company is headed for extinction.

Subaru is for all intent and practical purpose a Toyota brand already. Toyota is the largest and controlling shareholder and basically makes all the product development decision. In JDM, Subaru primarily sells rebadged Daihatsu and very few actual Subaru vehicles. It will be like Hino and Daihatsu - slowly absorbed into the collective.

Badge engineering at its worst. Me too styling with really bad looking grilles (or "not grilles" due to being EVs)  as well.

They both look like the new Corolla Cross. Very generic. Looks like both Subaru and Mazda are merging with Toyota. A lot of redundancy there. Very easy to lose your identity.

Eh, Mazda has done a pretty good job at keeping its identity/style.

Subaru has definitely fully jumped into the Toyota pool with these BEV twins and the GT86/FR-S/BRZ twins

At least the 86/BRZ are Subaru designed and engineered through and through. By contrast, Solterra is a rebadged bZ4X that lacks "Subaru DNA". This does not bode well for Subaru's future. As FordBuyer said, Subaru buyers don't want rebadged Toyotas.

Wrong again.  It was jointly designed by Subaru and Toyota and inspired by the Toyota AE86. It has Toyota fuel injection and transmission and a lot of other parts.

Toyota plan to sell a whopping 7,000 in 2022:

Quote

7,000: The total number of bZ4Xs that Toyota plans to sell in the U.S. in calendar year 2022 — about the number of Toyota Sienna minivans it sells in the U.S. in any given month. Incidentally, it’s 500 more vehicles than Subaru is allocated with its Solterra EV.

This is due in part to Toyota's staged U.S. market rollout in which BZ4X will only be sold in CARB ZEV states initially. The vehicle won't be available nationwide until the end of 2022.

Overall, BZ4X's unremarkable specs, hideous styling, and low sales projections in the U.S. demonstrates that Toyota continues to drag its feet when it comes to being serious about BEV.  2023 Mustang Mach-E Select is a better product in every way for only slightly higher price than BZ4X XLE.

Same problem though as we enter EV era. Neither Mazda nor Subaru have competitive hybrids and Hyundai/Kia especially are going to eat their lunch with $4 gas.

All that black cladding is really off putting. Way too much.

Lexus version of BZ4X announced today. MEET THE ALL-NEW LEXUS RZ, THE LUXURY BRAND’S FIRST BATTERY EV - Lexus USA Newsroom

PLANO, Texas (April 20, 2022) — Lexus is proud to unveil details of the all-new 2023 RZ 450e, the luxury brand’s first global Battery EV (BEV).

Since the launch of the RX400h in 2005, Lexus has been a pioneer of electrification within the luxury market. As with the first RX hybrid model, Lexus engineers have imbued the brand’s hybrid vehicles with an excellent driving identity and environmental performance. Under the ‘Lexus Electrified’ vision, Lexus aims to invigorate all guests’ authentic love for driving exhilaration, and in doing so, will broaden its Lexus Electrified portfolio of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) products to exceed the needs and expectations of a more diverse set of luxury buyers.

The portfolio expansion will move Lexus toward another essential goal: The realization of a sustainable global society. Lexus will contribute to achieving a carbon-neutral society by offering a full lineup of BEVs in all categories by 2030. Five years later, Lexus seeks to attain 100% BEV sales globally. To meet these challenges, Lexus will rigorously improve its products, along with the expertise of its personnel, by repeating “drive and fix” development at Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama (TTCS), Lexus’ new operational base.

They are really putting zero effort into making these 3 models different from each other.

With the BZ4X triplets, Toyota, Subaru, and Lexus appear to be putting zero effort with BEV generally in the U.S. market. The BS statement in the RZ press release, "Lexus has been a pioneer of electrification within the luxury market", says it all.

Oh come now, give them some credit.

It takes a lot of work to manage to create an uglier vehicle than the last with each new model.

In Toyotas defense, ALL car companies play fast and loose with that term-they include hybrids with that.
