Bronco Rates "Good" by IIHS

As usual the headlights keep it from a top thing.

Every time I take out our Edge at night now I am shocked by just how bad the headlights are. I never realized until I got the Mach-E, which are the best of any car I’ve owned. My Flex is between the two.

Ford could definitely do better at headlights, and I’m glad it’s started being included in evaluations.

I don't recall where I saw it online, but there was a report about the government changing headlamp standards, etc.

They’re finally reviewing the standards to bring them up to date and hopefully allow more of the European style systems.  Canada is also considering making automatic headlamps standard and requiring the instrument cluster not light up if the headlamps are off.

Why can we be told our washer tank is low and we cannot have a warning pop up on the dash saying "your lights are off and it is dark you dumbass."  Rental car companies almost across the board turn off the headlights and customer's don't even realize they are running around town without their lights on.....very dangerous.

IIHS has appropriately shamed automakers into taking headlamp design more seriously nowadays. For Ford there is room for improvement as you mentioned, but they are definitely doing better now than in the past. For example, 2021 Bronco Sport has headlamps rated "good" by IIHS on all trims - among the best of any vehicle in the Small SUV category. Also, Ford tweaked the LED projector headlamps on 2021 F-150 Lariat 502A, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited for trucks built after June 2021. They are rated "good" too.

DRL make this bad too. I see people driving without lights every day on my commute. I didn’t assign it to rental.  I never take my lights off auto, but I’ve had others turn it off, usually the dealer for service, or valet. I now know to check, but I’ve usually assumed it was something like that. We almost need taillight DRLs. Or mandated auto lights when in motion.

I don’t know how I managed to make it home tonight driving 45 minutes in the dark with the death trap f150 halogen lights.  Must be a Christmas miracle.

Better yet just make autolamps standard on every vehicle and default them to on every time the vehicle is started with the option to turn them off.

Glad to hear that you made it home safe (whether due to a Christmas miracle or otherwise), but there's still no excuse for automakers to equip new and redesigned cars and light trucks with crappy inadequate headlamps, like Ford did with the halogen units on 2021 F-150.

I will say that the headlights in our 2013 F150 were horrible.  I’m sure the newer halogens are better (the 2021 Kia Soul I drive occasionally aren’t really that terrible).  Now, my 2002 Mustang, factory “smoked” lenses are the absolute worst I’ve ever experienced.  When I purchased it new I was 20 years younger so my eyes worked better in the dark back then (Luckily I don’t drive it at night if I can avoid it these days haha).

The point is they’re not inadequate at all.  They’re quite adequate.  Others may be a lot better and you may prefer one over the other.  But to say they’re unsafe just because they aren’t the best is ridiculous.

Examples of inadequate, partially adequate, and adequate headlamp performance in IIHS testing.

2021 F-150 halogen low beam headlamps 2021 Ford F-150 (iihs.org)

  • inadequate visibility on all measures
  • no issues with glare to other motorists
  • Automatic high beam assist partially compensated for the inadequate low beam performance, but only on the straightaway tests.
  • Overall rating, Poor

On the straightaway, visibility was inadequate on both sides of the road. On curves, visibility was inadequate in all 4 tests. The low beams never exceeded glare limits.

2021 Bronco LED low beam headlamps (Big Bend with LED Signature Package, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, Badlands, Wildtrak, and First Edition Trims) 2021 Ford Bronco (iihs.org)

  • fair performance in the straightaway tests, inadequate visibility on curved roads
  • no issues with glare
  • Automatic high beam assist partially compensated for the inadequate low beam performance in all tests
  • Overall rating, Marginal

On the straightaway, visibility was fair on both sides of the road. On curves, visibility was inadequate in all 4 tests. The low beams never exceeded glare limits.

2021 Bronco Sport LED low beam headlamps

  • good visibility on all measures except left curves, where it was fair
  • no issues with glare
  • Automatic high beam compensated for the fair low beam performance on left curves
  • Overall rating, Good

On the straightaway, visibility was good on both sides of the road. On curves, visibility was good on both right curves and fair on both left curves. The low beams never exceeded glare limits.

How they measuring it? It makes no sense-for example that lights are "inadequate" because of curved roads, that would require tech that was more or less not accepted by the DOT due to their formerly archaic laws.

IIHS standards are like performance standards of the era-a 40 year old Escort Wagon could do 0-60 in 14.4 sec, but yet today a 1.3L Escape can do it in under 8 seconds. It could be argued the Escort Wagon was dangerously underpowered (which it was IMO) when its compared to a rough equivalent 40 years later.
