Our road taxes and stuff is wrapped into insurance cost here. "Registration cost" here is basically just administration fee to issue paperwork.. its like $28 iirc. Same for every single vehicle on the road. Its also only due when you renew your policy, so it doesnt matter if the vehicle has sat uninsured for 10 years, its still only $28.

The insurance on my new truck was only $7 per month more then my 11 year old previous truck...?

Which state do you live in?

OUCH!!!

Most people don’t know that if you have a camper shell on your truck in California  you can go to DMV and reregister it as a non commercial vehicle and save hundreds. I’ve done it so has my father in law. Just make sure when you go down there make sure the bed is empty. Just throw a foam pad and a sleeping bag in the back and tell them you use it for camping. Real easy.

In NH we have no sales tax but registration for our 22 F250 was $956 for this year, but did include title and vanity plate fees and at the full 18 mills.  Actual registration is closer to $55/year and the mill rate drops to 15 in year two, then 12, 9, 6, and then to 3 for as long as you own it.  It’s almost all deductible, so I get it back.

For registration?

This is just registration.  Tax was paid at the dealer since i purchased it out of state. I was surprised as well, i was thinking it would be around 1200$ There are a bunch of Fees for the weight of the truck.

Has to be ad valorem tax which is paid at time of registration.  Unless trucks have some special fees.

I agree with you on the enforcement part.  CHP will likely not enforce CVRA violations on private vehicles, but DMV 4008 doesn't state anywhere that it is only applicable on "for hire" vehicles.  There are lots of issues like this from the CA DMV.  For instance, you can technically tow up to a 15K 5th wheel with a non-commercial class C license, but only if you have the special endorsement.  Very little people know about it even the people in the DMV office, haha.

Also most people don’t know that if you have a camper shell on your truck you can register it as a non commercial vehicle like an suv etc. almost cuts the registration fee in half, maybe between a third and half.

I'm seeing all these crazy high registration costs? Are you all talking about plates?

I got new plates. (Custom plates) and paid for the plate and registration. $150.25 for one year.

Yes in California it’s like 1500 a year to register an expensive truck  and it’s every year. And for all of that money they send you a sticker to put on your vehicle license plate  for that year. It’s ridiculous and a joke. This state is a joke.

Again, the high cost is usually ad valorem tax not the actual registration and that varies by state and county.

I guess we're not including sales tax here?  I consider that part of registration because you have to pay that to title it and you have to title it to register.

But sales tax is a one time charge.  Registration and ad valorem taxes are annual.

In California the registration is based on price of the vehicle, weight of the vehicle and in California if your vehicle has a bed on it they consider it a commercial vehicle even if it’s an El Camino or a Subaru brat it doesn’t matter.  And you pay this outrageous fee every year. Ridiculous I know. Welcome to socialism.

The registration fees are high + you pay based on the weight of the vehicle.  My city charged me 721$ for the privilege of driving on their streets I'd prefer to live in Montana but don't think I'll make it one winter there lol.

I’m still awaiting my truck to arrive this fall, but I talked to the county folks here and it will be $1521 for registration and plates.  Add on 5% sales tax and my total damage will be $5496.   Plates in WY are ridiculous, I just paid $150 to renew my 2004 Tundra.

In California it’s registration cost only. I have been paying these ridiculous registration fees for 40+ years. The state says it’s for the roads and that’s why it’s so high but we have one of the worst highways/roads system in the country.

New York will give Cali a run for that title.

Nope - it’s based on the value of the vehicle therefore it is by definition an ad valorem tax that you pay at registration time.
