$2.90 here for E-10 87 in the outskirts of metro Atlanta.  Governor suspended taxes again and there is a price war with new local stations.

Just a matter of time and not long probably before prices go a lot higher. The most recent factor months ago was OPEC+ reducing production and now the situation with Gaza, Hamas, Iran, etc. The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) was created for emergency situations but used recently for political reasons in order to keep gas prices lower. The SPR volume is now the lowest in 40 years and it will take years to replenish the supply at substantially higher costs. We now have a legitimate situation in the Middle East which could lead to a major escalation in oil prices and substantially higher gas prices in the U.S. soon.

With the volatility in gasoline and diesel fuel pricing nowadays, it's a good time to revisit the recommendation that Bill Ford Junior made almost 15 years ago. Add Bill Ford to Chorus on Higher Gas Tax | Cars.com

Bill Ford Jr., has begun to advocate strongly for a gas tax that creates a price bottom for gasoline. Ford cites the need for “predictability” in fuel pricing and suggests the government send a price signal strong enough to turn people permanently toward buying fuel-efficient cars.

He says gas prices of $3.50 per gallon [$5.00 in 2023 dollars] produced a “sea change in customer behavior” this past summer. That is what it will likely take to move American buyers to fuel-efficient cars consistently.

This morning's gas prices in Hamden, CT (New Haven)

  • $3.69 Regular (Cash) @ Gulf
  • $3.75 Regular (Cash) @ Citgo

Per usual, CT gas prices are above the national average. What's surprising is that oil prices are still stable with the recent events in the Middle East. It's a situation that can change at any moment and drive oil and gas prices higher very quickly.

Did not think I’d see gas this cheap again.  Filled up yesterday in Beaumont Texas.  Had 1/2 tank but couldn’t pass up deal.  Across street was $2.169 at convenience store for cash.  Unfortunately next full tank was at $3.199 in Alabama.  Could have made it into Florida but that’s almost always higher.  Sometimes wish I had an even larger fuel tank.

Setting the environment aside for a moment, and looking at economics of premium fuel (which I expect many buyers do), it is very difficult to understand paying $1.00 more for premium.  How much more efficient does an engine have to be to make up 25~30% higher cost?

$2.459/gallon for 87 octane (E-10) Phillips 66 gasoline in north central Oklahoma today (as of Monday, 6 Nov 23).  It's been coming down a few cents/gallon every few days for 2 or 3 weeks now.

Tuesday: $2.419/gallon for E-10 87 octane here now.  It's $3.199 for 87 pure gasoline (not E-10).

Been holding steady for about the past month at $3.59 for 87 in my hometown here in West Central PA but that's generally the lowest price station in about a 40 mile radius.

It doesn't-its a "power adder" though I do believe that many Toyotas and other makers require or recommend putting 91+ vs 87 into their engines. Plus IIRC ROW Octane levels are higher then in the USA too.

West burbs of Milwaukee this morning.  Not so bad here. Seems prices vary wildly by region.

Slight change this morning. Both stations tend to change prices on Monday and/or Friday mornings, when there's a change, with the Gulf station always being less than the Citgo station. The Citgo station is much higher volume though due to location.

Yesterday the wife filled up at the new BP station.  She’s positive she selected 87.  She even remembers the price going from $2.74 to $2.70 based on rewards points.  But the pump charged the premium price of $3.89.  When she complained the clerk just said well that’s what you must have picked.  Not worth fighting this time but you better believe we’ll be checking next time.

Regular was $2.59 a couple of days ago.  I always get premium, which is usually 75-80 cents more.
