Would love to see that. I think we're only a few short years away from seeing the pendulum swing back towards sedans and hatchbacks becoming popular again.

Why? The SUV market has been growing since 1998 or so.

What it boils down to is that SUV/CUV market is overall a better fit for the vast majority of buyers-its a swiss army knife that can do multiple things.

The other issue is most people don't switch out cars every 3-5 years like they did almost 50 years ago, which explains why things like the personal coupe and vans where so popular at the time, but where dead within 10-15 years or less. Now people keep cars 10-15 years and they "overbuy" vehicles-have two kids? The automatic thinking is to buy a 3 row SUV because of all the crap that kids need/have, even though you could get away with driving an Escape and do that.

Valid points, it's just with trends in the auto industry being cyclical, you're always wondering when previously shunned vehicle types will become beloved again by consumers. When vans came out, everyone wanted them because station wagons were stale and associated with their boring parents. The same thing happened to vans when crossovers started to take off in popularity. Now you're seeing a growing number of people who don't want crossovers, or so they say,and vans are starting to become desirable again within certain circles.

Maybe eventually, but I don't see that happening in just a few years.

Cyclical?

Wagons, manual transmissions, 2 door trucks, bench seats, halogen lighting, body on frame cars, etc etc.  Not coming back.

Remember the current generation of new buyers grew up with SUVs, crossovers and trucks that are just as luxurious as cars used to be with even more amenities, more cargo room, towing and hauling and AWD without sacrificing fuel economy or ride quality.

Fewer drivers today value car handling which is the only objective advantage of a sedan other than cost.  The rest is all subjective - styling, etc.and people’s preferences are changing.

Yeah a fringe group of people who want (or have to) live out of their vehicle or the overlanding crowd. Minivans are extremely popular a town over from me due to the Hasidic population there and their large families, but that doesn't mean they are "popular" overall.

There has been zero indication that any previous generation product has come back into style like fashion does. Retro styling was a thing about 20 years ago, but it was limited to extremely popular/icons of their time-basically people who wanted a modern version of a 1967 Mustang in the form of the 2005 Mustang and the new Beetle, which was a quantum leap improvement in refinement over the original one.

Makes sense that the Fusion Active possibly will replace the Edge. Hopefully it will be offered in hybrid/plugin form. No real need for all electric. This way it will have wider audience no matter where they live.

You mean the one they are most definitely not being going here?

Where do people get this idea that car types and styles are cyclical?

In a very broad sense, they sort of are, in that crossovers today are very much the same from factor of vehicles in say the 30s and 40s, but there are many other factors as others have mentioned.

Lost in all this debate is another prototype sighting: Ford Fusion Active Prototype Spotted With Dual Exhaust, Tow Hitch (fordauthority.com)

Looking at the hard point of the hood (the arched opening) and shape camo directly under it makes me think its still a Lincoln. Plus those look like Lincoln wheels-but those are easy to change out.

It also has the upper spoiler rear wiper placement Lincoln is using.

There IS another mule running around that IS a "Fusion Active", and it has the wiper located in the "old" place on the lower middle part of the rear glass.

Why Ford Authority doesn't notice this and/or ignores it, I don't quite understand.

Could be deliberate to generate comments and traffic on their site, sure there’s speculation but that all part of the fun and intrigue. I wouldn’t be disappointed if North America got a couple more C2s that sell in an important sector just below Explorer/Aviator. Intriguing how many hybrids and PHEVs Ford seems to be moving into plain sight, all while the Lightning, Mach E and E Transit take the limelight.
