Ford Dealer Holding Maverick From Delivery

My friend had his Maverick Lariat delivered yesterday to North Brothers Ford. When he called the dealer he was told the recently built Maverick cannot be sold until the side air bag is replaced. The replacement air bags will NOT be available until January 2023 at the earliest. They have his blue Maverick on display...but he cannot take delivery!

Does anyone have any information on this? The last posting on the air bag was August ....and his car was built in October.

Best to run the VIN to verify that it's subject to the recall.  Is it possible that it was in production back in July but only finished or shipped this month?  Others have experienced that.  The order tracker should provide insight into when it went into production

That is a good possibility. It appears he's forced to wait for parts. It also appears that Ford is shipping these trucks to dealers to have them install the parts, rather than holding them at the plant!

Update! The Ford dealer claims they will not sell any new vehicle that has an open recall! Despite the recall notice on purchased Mavericks claiming they "Don't have to park the units" and can drive them till parts are available early next year. I called a larger Ford dealer (Bill Brown)....and they just sold a couple new Mavericks they received!

I know the dealer couldn't care less, since they could sell his Maverick ...no problem for them.

There's a delivery hold.  Even if they sold the vehicle, the new owner could not take delivery or even test drive it without the dealer 1) being opened up to liability, 2) owing a civil penalty up to $21k.  They're being honest and upfront with you.  Be upset at the situation, not the dealer (about this part of the deal, anyway).

Thanks for the official letter. I told him to NOT cancel the order. It's parked on a hill so everyone passing by the dealer will see it. That was also a concern they would be letting people test drive it...however your attached note confirms that's not allowed! So, his car will sit for months until the part arrives. It is what it is. Thanks again!

So vehicles already delivered are ok to drive but ones not yet delivered have to be held for 6 months while new vehicles continue to be built and shipped?  That’s ridiculous.  I hope this delivery hold is just a placeholder while they get an exception or work something out.

He needs to check with the dealer to confirm his is actually affected.  The recall is specific to build dates through July 9th.  If his was built after that date it should be good to go.  He can run his VIN through the NHTSA recall website and see if it applies.  Either his truck was built much earlier than the delivery (more than a couple months), or the dealer is doing something wrong (not verifying it applies to that unit or hoping he will cancel so they can sell at a markup).

We just submitted the VIN (3fttw8e9xnra82733) into the NHTSA website and it shows a recall. We don't have the build date...yet, since we are trying to get the Order #1 which will help find the actual build date! I will update....to confirm once we find the Order #!

Unfortunately, this particular Maverick was indeed In Production back on July 4, and didn't switch to Built until September 28.  So it did get caught up in the airbag recall as a result.

Oh man, we missed the cutoff by less than a week. Bummer! I appreciate your effort as well as the rest of the forum contributors to this dilemma. Of course, he's lost any hope of taking delivery for months to come. I understand if it was a "stop/don't drive" letter, but with 64,000 Mavericks still driving with the defect, what difference does it make from taking delivery? I am urging him to NOT cancel the '1 year old order', since he is considering buying a new Chevy. The dealer has no idea when parts will arrive....in the meantime new Mavericks are being delivered everyday to owners without any hold. Thanks again for the information!
