lfeg
Selling an assembly plant to a prospective competitor? Might not be the best move for the future.

mackinaw
Ford of Europe may be on borrowed time. Besides selling this plant, they are planning to cut 3,200 product development jobs in Germany. Ford is developing future EV's in the U.S, so Cologne has become redundant.

It boils down to dealing with the union in Germany-let the new owners deal with that.

No doubt a factor. However, BYD would be coming in at a better position than Ford, i.e. Ford was going to close this plant, were are saving it but give us too much trouble and we are gone. I now see that BYD may be eyeing that plant to built large commercial BEV's, if so it would not be competing with Ford. Maybe Otosan though. jpd80
The gloom in the article ignores the fact that most of Ford’s current and future production comes from Valencia, Romania and the reconfigured Cologne plant. Building Fiesta and Focus in Germany was hellishly expensive for vehicles expected to sell at competitively low prices. The near future for Ford Europe will be its new BEV “Escape” and “Focus Active” as well as BEV Puma plus imported Mach E……and that’s before switching any of the current C2 production out of Valencia.
