Ford withdraws petition seeking U.S. approval to deploy self-driving vehicles

Sounds like Level 3 it is for now. So much for that driverless future someone around here has been continuously touting:

In a statement to Automotive News, Ford spokesman Alan Hall said it withdrew the petition as part of a strategic decision announced in late 2022 to focus more on its advanced driver-assist system development for personally owned vehicles, "shifting away from developing Level 4 autonomous vehicles for commercial fleets."

"As a result of this decision, we no longer need NHTSA to extend the exemption petition to support Level 4-related testing for Ford at this time," Hall said.

While it's very disappointing that Ford has fallen behind in the burgeoning Level 4 AV based mobility services market compared to Waymo, GM, Daimler, Baidu, etc., the withdrawal of Ford's NHTSA petition is a logical consequence of its decision to shut down its Argo AI subsidiary last October. Before it was shuttered, Argo AI's work enabled Ford to become the first company in the world to test Level 4 robotaxi service without safety drivers in 2 U.S. cities simultaneously.

Hopefully the new Latitude AI subsidiary will get Ford back into the game sooner rather than later.

Why should I buy a car if I'm not going to drive it?

Some reasons are safety, enhanced mobility for people with impairments that limit their ability to drive, and sustainability. Plus, you don't have to buy a car in order to take advantage of the benefits of autonomous vehicles. Mobility services involving AV deployment for robotaxis for example, don't require that the end consumer purchase the car itself.
