F350(DRW) vs F450(DRW)

Recommended Posts

Currently own a 2017 F350(DRW) and reviewing upgrading to same 2024 model.  Future plan is to tow our triple-axle, 18K pound boat and trailer, on long range road trips (ie. WA to FL, to MX, to CN, etc.).

Any significant reason to consider the 450 versus 350 for these future plans?

Thanks for opinions.

We have a 2022 F450 Super Crew 4x4, it has a much shorter  turn radius due to the different front axle which makes it pretty nice when parking, it is very noticeable. The ride on ours is amazingly good for such a heavily sprung truck. I believe the brakes and axles  are bigger than a 350 too. I also notice that we don't get pushed around by semi's when they are passing us as we did when we had the F350. The biggest downside to me is the rear axle  ratio, it gives you all kinds of towing power, but the mileage isn't as good as the 350 was, but it isn't our daily driver so i can live with that. Tires will be more expensive to change out due to size, but, all in all, we love the truck.

I have a 2024 Platinum F350 DRW with the HO 6.7L.  We tow our 20k+ pound triple axle Brinkley toy hauler with gooseneck conversion.  It handles it perfectly fine.  No complaints whatsoever.

We traded our F450 for an F350 because the unloaded ride is awful. We tow 10%of the time, touring & errands account for 90%. The F450 did not do this well. The factory front tires will start breaking off chunks inside of 20K miles. Know you are going to want to replace them much earlier than you thought. Rears wear well. As mentioned, the turning radius is much better than the F350. The F450 has larger brakes and a heavier duty rear end. Since you are towing a boat vs 5th wheel, I'd imagine the F350 DRW will be more than enough. Many love their F450. Although A LOT of owners change the rims and tires to a different size to improve ride quality. I decided not to spend $5-6k chasing ride quality on a truck I already spent $80k on. You have an F350 and know its characteristics. Try and find a F450 for a test drive and compare. I swear we felt every pebble in the road. Never again. But that's my assessment.

Did your F450 have the heavy duty front suspension? Have watched a youtuber (BigtruckRV) make sure to avoid that on his new one due to the ride difference!

Have a 2014 F350 with the Heavy Duty Front Suspension and it does ride pretty rough.  If I purchased another one, I would not get the Heavy Duty Front Suspension.

The only reason one would order the HD front suspension is if they intended to put a plow on it.
