Ram EV Delayed.....again.

“Need more time to validate the quality of the (EREV) truck”?  I’d bet performance is not what they expected, and I don’t mean 0 to 60 acceleration times.  If I had to guess, fuel efficiency on gas power, particularly when towing, is sub standard.  Just a guess though.

Only speculation on my part, but I am guessing they are frantically tweaking software trying to make this fatally compromised truck work.  It likely is not competitive as a BEV truck (short EV range), not competitive as a hybrid truck (grossly overweight) and not competitive as an ICE truck (inefficient and under powered when battery is depleted). Software will not be able to overcome this.

I think Ford really got it right with the F-150 Powerboost. It is not compromised in any measure and will run circles around the Ram EREV.

Agree an HEV pickup similar to F-150 PowerBoost is likely best overall compromise given present-day available technology.  Pure EV like Chevy Silverado with over 200 kWh battery are too expensive, too heavy, and have limited towing range.  An EREV like RAM should work for some owners’ specific needs but that pool of buyers will be very small IMO.  By comparison an HEV works well for most buyers and saves gas in city driving for a minimal added cost.

That’s not to say Ford or other manufacturers can’t make an HEV pickup that is even more fuel efficient, particularly in highway driving.  It’s interesting that EPA rates the 4WD F-150 at the same 24 MPG HWY whether PowerBoost, 3.5L EB, or 5.0L V8.  I’m curious to see what direction Ford takes future generations of large hybrids.
