blazerdude20
https://www.carscoops.com/2025/06/toyota-highlander-sienna-erev-range-extender/ “Both the Highlander SUV and Sienna minivan, which are nearly identical to their North American counterparts, are confirmed to be getting new generations with a range-extender electric powertrain option.” The Chinese models are nearly identical to the models sold in North America. So it is likely that will be the case for the upcoming generation as well.

IIRC the few Extended Range Electric Vehicles that have been tried were discontinued, so jury may still be out on EREV viability. Hope there’s a technical breakthrough in this area but doesn’t seem all that promising to me unless buyer expectations change significantly. What’s also interesting in article is mention of next generation hybrid system. We should give Toyota credit for never being satisfied, and continuously pushing for improvements. Quote In addition to the EREV plans, Toyota confirmed that its sixth-generation hybrid system is in development. This new iteration aims to improve both fuel efficiency and performance. Rick73
This is an interesting EREV option I had not seen before. It’s a Subaru but has ties to Toyota. https://www.carscoops.com/2025/06/subaru-rex-hybrid-efficiency-japan/

Obviously some do, but too many companies seem to prioritize cost-cutting and marketing over technology to a different extent. This seems especially true to me in area of hybrids, where Toyota (and also Honda) have made significant commitments over the years relative to other manufacturers. Never implied it’s a black-and-white, all-or-nothing issue. But yeah, I respect what Toyota has accomplished with hybrids.

To be fair, as of late, they have been putting a lot more resources into redesigns. Whether that will continue or whether they revert back to leaving products like Tundra, Tacoma,4Runner, etc largely unchanged for 10+ years or not remains to be seen. Don’t care for new Tacoma so Toyota could have made it 20 years or longer till they came up with something better. 😀 I was referring to Toyota hybrid system already being pretty efficient yet they want even more. Below is hyper-miling stunt, mostly for show, but still counts in highlighting potential. https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a62158263/toyota-prius-guinness-book-of-world-records-cross-country-gas-mileage/
akirby
Like Ford, Toyota is good at innovating and keeping the cash cows updated while letting others rot on the vine.
