rmc523
2026 Ford Explorer Platinum Drops 3.0L V6 EcoBoost Seems dumb to have the top trim not have access to the top engine option, but maybe there was a very low take rate on it?
blazerdude20
They just introduced the Tremor trim that has the 3.0L optional but then remove it from the top trim… makes no sense.

bzcat
I have only seen 2 Explorer Platinum in the wild so it is not a popular choice to begin with and having two engine choices for such a low volume trim didn't make sense. However, I would have kept the 3.0 and nuked the 2.3. Force the upsell for people who wanted the kitchen sink edition.
Rick73
Maybe the lower fuel economy rating played a part in decision. Difference is roughly 10%, not that many buyers probably care all that much at that price point.
bzcat
You are probably right, CAFE is always the answer. If Ford expects Tremor buyers to opt for the 3.0, they have to reduce the 3.0 volume from somewhere.

bravestar
After removing second row window shades and power telescoping steering wheel on late 2025 models. Good way to make the top trim less attractive. Edited June 30 by bravestar

Will be interesting to see how much longer that option continues. It would seem 3.3L V6 has very low volume unless being exported or used for other applications I’m not aware of. https://fordauthority.com/2025/05/2025-ford-police-interceptor-features-its-own-8-inch-display/ Quote Interestingly, while it does feature an overhauled interior, the 2025 Ford Police Interceptor does not boast the same revised front fascia as its civilian counterpart, an interesting tidbit that Ford Authority originally revealed back in July 2023. Instead, the vehicle features the same front end as the pre-refresh model. It’s also still offered with the 3.3L V6 hybrid powertrain as standard, thanks to high demand for the electrified law enforcement version. Customers can also choose from a regular, non-hybrid version of the 3.3L V6, as well as the twin-turbo 3.0L V6 EcoBoost, each driving all four wheels. rmc523
2026 Ford Explorer Replaces Vista Roof With Fixed Glass Option Apparently they're ditching the openable sunroof with just a fixed glass panel. Less complex/things to break I guess, But I like opening it up. 1

I can assume other manufacturers are realizing people are mostly ok with just the glass option. Saving production and warranty costs. I personally like the moonroof option, even if it can only be open for like 3 months here in the PNW.

ANTAUS
So spend for the best, and get the cheap engine? Urrggg, I call that "mediocre rich"....like my uncle who would by an S-Class, just to say he had an S-class and yet smallest engine and no options. As Bzcat said, force the upsell. Honestly at that price point, the buyer wouldn't care anyways. So how can Platinum be Plantinum, when it's tarnished by the cheap engine, wouldn't that makes it "Titanium"... since it's cheaper than Platinum... right?
twintornados
The ST is the line topper (Tremor for the "off-road" crowd), the Platinum is for folks that find 300+ horsepower adequate in their "sedan"....my Timberline had a sufficient amount of hustle for the 2.3L Ecoboost.....jus' sayin'..... jpd80
At the moment, there’s over 1,200 platinum 3.0 V6s available at Ford dealers nationwide, so looks like maybe Ford is dropping the 3.0 V6 in Platinum because of low take rate?

And while I'd rather have a fixed glass roof than a regular solid roof, I still like the option of opening it. What I'm curious to see is whether it fits within the same opening as the current vista roof, or if they make the opening larger now that they don't have to accommodate the mechanical hardware to open it? 10 hours ago, twintornados said: The ST is the line topper (Tremor for the "off-road" crowd), the Platinum is for folks that find 300+ horsepower adequate in their "sedan"....my Timberline had a sufficient amount of hustle for the 2.3L Ecoboost.....jus' sayin'..... Eh, I'd disagree - there are people out there that want the performance with a more "luxury" interior, vs. the sporty and all-black interior of the ST. That said, you're also right that for many buyers, the 2.3 would be sufficient. This seems like a typical "reduce build combos/complexity" move as a model ages....they shifted the powertrain option from one trim to another. It is what it is, this isn't the 1980s when AC wasn't standard on vehicles and a sun/moon roof was a nice way to get extra air into the car. I seriously wonder how many people actually use them and saying you do is fine and good, but its like saying you still use LPs when tech has moved on to other things that more people use. I gotta say, I have had sunroofs in my past SUV's (not counting the Bronco...ultimate sunroof option there...lol) but when I ordered my Maverick, I decided I did not want a sunroof and to tell you the truth, I don't really miss it....it's like Ford just "knows" me.....🤨

As a reminder, the Panoramic Vista Roof offers a moonroof component, meaning it can be partially opened.

I was kicking around buying one more Explorer before downsizing since the Tremor with the 3.0 was kind of interesting, but we routinely open our moonroofs and this guarantees we will not buy one. I hope Ford doesn’t make this stupid decision on their trucks! 2 hours ago, akirby said: Maybe try reading next time….
