2026 Ford Mustang Drops Universal Garage Door Opener

Recommended Posts

Surely they’ll make it a dealer installable option.  Most buyers have a garage door and it’s a simple visor swap if the visor has power.

It was bad enough they only offered it on some trims.  My 2018 F150 XLT didn’t have it so I had to buy and swap out a Lariat visor which was a PITA because it had no power (no lighted vanity mirror).  Had to run wire over to the overhead console.

Meanwhile, inside, the 2026 Ford Mustang gains black foot pedals on EcoBoost Premium and GT Premium models, while the auto-dimming frameless rearview mirror is gone from EcoBoost Premium and GT trims, replaced with a manual flip framed mirror.

Changes also include removing the metal pedals, and a flip mirror even on upper trims.  These types of moves are ridiculous.  These are items customers see/use daily....I just don't understand what they're thinking.  They're going to point to some data set that says "oh only X% of customers use this feature", but that's BS.  I miss the Mulally days where he wanted Ford products to have all the tech/equivalent or better features than the competition.

Another option:

I use it and its good, but its completely annoying that it has ZERO integration with Apple CarPlay, so I can't just hit the icon on my display to open/close my garage door!

We have that too, but it's a PITA instead of using the button on the visor.  I HATE having to have the actual remote in the vehicle.

I always use the garage opener on my visor ONLY because I always park in my garage. For my tenants though, I always advice them that if they park outside on the driveway, anyone can break a window, press the button on the visor, and walk right into their garage.  For those that use the garage as storage to store grandma's antiques (Rooms 2 Go paid of junk) while letting their car rot outside in the FL sun making monthly payments, I advise them they can get one of those small garage openers that hang on the keyfob they can take with them when they park outside.

These are things the customer routinely interacts with so it is just mind boggling these are what you choose to save a buck on so you can increase your profit margin.  Did I miss the corresponding cut in price of the vehicle?  It’s one thing to remove options and charge less, but this routine of cutting things and paying more is beyond frustrating, especially when the competition has the respective option.

For the price of new Mustangs, should be voice activated so I can make the door open with "Open Sesame!". But a dollar saved per unit is a big deal, don't know what a the door opener unit costs, but imagine having a dealer install will cost way more.

As for the "clip on" openers, had one fail once. In the fall, temperature had fallen and the opener kept making/breaking contact. Caused my door to raise and lower several times at 6 AM. Thankfully I was home at the time.
