Grinding noise while driving

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have a 2015 F250 Super Duty with the 6.2L gas engine it has auto and manual locking front hubs. I'm hearing a grinding noise somewhere in the drivetrain that I can't really pinpoint. It happens after I get the truck warmed up and start driving it. If I start it in the morning and drive to work I won't hear it but everyday I'll hear it on my way back from work. It sounds like one of the axle shafts is grinding and when I get slowed down to around 30 MPH I can hear it pop back into place and won't hear it again for a little bit. When the grinding noise can be heard the truck has a little less power than normal. But for the life of me I cannot pinpoint the location of the grinding noise.

If anyone can help with this let me know.

Thank you

Does the grinding noise happen no matter if you're in 4wd or 2wd? It could be a vacuum leak in the integrated wheel ends, causing the hubs to partially engage, or something else with that system. The grinding could come from the splines trying to mesh at speed. The pop you hear could even be a hub fully disengaging after being stuck partially engaged. The reduced power could be from increased rolling resistance from front axle drag when hubs are engaged unintentionally.

I always keep my hubs in the auto lock I know that I have a vacuum leak on the front passenger side I need to get fixed but I haven’t used 4wd for awhile so I don’t know if it does it then but it does it in 2wd.
