It has a front fender port like an all-electric, but a large air intake in the chin spoiler- EREV? PHEV?

1) Electrics still have air intakes (usually on the bottom, as you point out)

2) the article speculated that maybe it's a PHEV, and mentioned Toyota has some sort of new compact 4-cyl design

PHEV would still need a grill for the radiator.

That is the actual production car??

It looks like a 1980s concept car...and I actually kinda like it.

Its better then the generic bar of soap we've been getting as of late.

I'm thinking it's one of those "90%" concepts that's basically what they're planning on introducing, but isn't quite production.  Take the windows for example, I doubt we'll see such flush glass on a production Corolla, but I'm sure the shape/look will be the same.

The Striking Toyota Corolla Concept Hits Reset on the Sedan

Reflecting the Corolla’s diverse body style heritage, Toyota plans to offer a wide range of powertrains: from a fully electric model to full-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants.

A pure internal combustion version is also in the works, and Toyota isn’t ruling out an ICE Corolla powered by carbon-neutral fuel.

An all-new generation of the Corolla is expected to arrive sometime in 2027, or possibly a bit earlier, as the current one has already been in production for eight long years.

It's just a concept, but I assume it previews the actual production model.  It's interesting.  The back looks a little disjointed, though.

See, now this is a good example of using expressive, sporty stying to turn a commuter car into something more desirable, and aspirational. Ford, take notes for your future upcoming affordable EVs.

Let's see the production model before declaring it a home run.

We’ve seen the new inline 4-cylinder 1.5L engine that is more compact than Toyota’s 1.5L 3-cylinder, but what stands out to me is how low the front end seems to be, unless entire car is much larger than previous Corolla.  Hard to tell scale from a picture but that new engine must not be very tall.

I like front end appearing to be much more aerodynamic; whether it is or not.  Corolla needs better aerodynamic efficiency given its highway fuel economy isn’t better than larger Camry.  The concept’s front looks better than Prius to me.  With 1.5L new engine and improved efficiency 60 MPG may be a possibility. 👍

Well, with how cars tend to endlessly grow, it's possible the new one will be bigger.

Perhaps that's their goal with a longer shape - to improve aero?  Especially if they're going with a multi-powertrain approach (i.e. EVs involved).

I kinda like it but I think its going to be watered down quite a bit and won't translate as well to a production model.

Looking at the current model and the concept, they aren't all that far apart, it looks like Toyota broke out a straight edge for the styling on the concept

They are using a lot of black to hide things-like the C pillar and making the green house look different towards the rear view mirrors

Definitely agree that it'll be watered down a lot for production.  That's why I was saying above, let's see a production version first before saying Toyota has a home run design wise.

Uh that is the concept (same color/wheels) as what was poste before....just the windows aren't photoshoped/tinted out

That window drop in the front door looks awful IMO.

My bad — you’re right that announced reveal was of concept.  The source could have been clearer.  Anyway, appearance of this car looks pretty good to me from some angles and not others.  One video suggested car appears wider and lower than existing Corolla, which seems unlikely in final form.  I can see it becoming wider but with trend towards taller vehicles a lower Corolla is unlikely IMO.  A lower Corolla could improve fuel economy and feel sportier but would make it harder to get in and out.  Hard to say what they end up with since taller-vehicle demand may be covered with other models like the cross.

Curious if retractable rear diffuser (to reduce aero drag) will make it to production.  I can’t make out details from previous picture, but Mercedes used similar diffuser to achieve a Cd of only 0.17 with EQXX prototype, and now using on CLA to reduce Cd to only 0.21.

No way in hell on that I'd say. But the overall shape and styling, I can see making it to production.

Probably right, though it would be cool to see.  Active aerodynamic design features like spoilers and grille shutters have become more common so maybe a diffuser isn’t that out of the question.  Corolla’s low price point may not allow it for a mass-market vehicle yet, but it may not be that expensive, at least if in a scaled down production version.  Toyota knows how to manufacture stuff affordable so if anyone can do it….   I’ll look for other pictures because I can’t clearly see much detail from that angle with all the reflections and all.  Who knows, it may not even be a retractable diffuser? 😀
