It’s going to take time

Yea, the big shot at MEMA The Vehicle Suppliers Association suggested that it'll probably be a decade or two or three

“In some cases this has been 20 or 30 years in the making, and we’re trying to undo it in a few years. It’s not going to happen that fast.”

Wouldn't be surprised if Ford is next to announce somthin' like that for suppliers. The head honcho said the following on the Office Hours TV show and podcast this week:

Speaking to "Office Hours," Farley warned that the US was also far too dependent on other countries, such as China, for vital materials like rare earths, which are used to manufacture advanced magnets that are critical to the auto industry.

China imposed restrictions on imports of rare earths earlier this year amid the trade war with the US, sparking supply chain chaos at automakers and other manufacturers across the globe.

"I don't think most Americans have any idea how scary our dependency is on certain countries," said Farley.

Well given what is being talked about in my world, you might only have about 24-30 months to do so.

The downside of an interconnected global market...

GM might see the writing on the wall: supply chains that run through China are politically untenable at this point. I work in the economic development field with a lot federal funding, and it's actually surprising how much protectionist trade and procurement policy has transcended through the Trump 1 > Biden > Trump 2 era without being modified or revoked. No matter who is elected in 2028, I can't see these protections being revoked due to the potential political backlash from a lot of groups with a vested interest in domestic production.

When you read up on your Ford History, Rouge was originally supposed to be the "make everything" plant for the production of a car from tires to batteries to wood for flooring to steel production...Henry wanted to control all of what went into a car so as not to be beholden to any outside influence...Fordlandia was supposed to supply Rouge with the raw materials as well....Henry was right, just a century too early.
