Compact Ford Bronco PHEV Will Hit European Streets In 2027

According to Automotive News, the new model planned for Europe is indeed a "chunky" compact SUV that will wear the Ford Bronco nameplate, and it will be built alongside the Kuga at Valencia, as expected. Additionally, this new Bronco model will utilize a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which is something that no Bronco currently offers - in fact, outside of the all-electric and extended-range electric vehicle models sold exclusively in China at the moment, no electrified Bronco model of any kind exists.

However, outside of its name, this new Ford Bronco PHEV reportedly doesn't share anything in common with the Bronco or Bronco Sport sold in the U.S., and it will in fact be smaller than the Kuga.

This makes zero sense unless they are doing a reskinned Puma as a Bronco?

From Autoline Daily:

Other than the boxy styling, the new model for the region will be nothing like the North American Broncos. It’s going to be built alongside the Kuga in Spain and will be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The model will slot between the Kuga, which is Europe’s version of the Escape, and the Puma, which is Ford’s best-selling model in Europe. An all-electric version is not said to be in the cards, but other powertrains are expected to be.

This makes no sense. You already have a vehicle that slots in below the kuga and above the puma with a boxy design and the bronco name. It’s called the bronco sport! Why not just use that?

I agree....they must feel it's not good enough for the Euro market?

Bronco Sport is the same size (within an inch or two) than Kuga/Escape....

Aside from length or height, there's not much wiggle room size wise between Puma and Escape that would be THAT much different than our Bronco Sport already is.

The point is that if they're splitting hairs, why go through the effort of designing a whole new vehicle and not use what you already have?

I guess they feel our BS isn't right for the Euro market, and that no amount of sprucing up will do?  I feel like we're going to basically see and ICE version of their Explorer (I still think it was a stupid use of the name).

From Auto News, this quote implies the BS is too "off-road focused" and therefore the Euro model will be 'more refined':

Quote

The Spanish-built Bronco will be slightly smaller than the Kuga and has no connection with the larger Bronco and Bronco Sport off-road focused models sold in the U.S.

Not defending anything, just trying to parse what Ford are thinking here. It wouldn't be the first time a Ford model in one global market didn't pass muster for use in another Ford market.

Granted it's connecting some dots, but that lines up with my speculation of basically an ICE (well, PHEV) Euro Explorer.

Maybe it portends to a replacement Bronco Sport in the North American market?

This article is partially true in that the next gen Bronco Sport will be built in Valencia, Spain but it’s not just for Europe.

It is my understanding that this is definitely the next gen Bronco Sport for global consumption. It will come from Valencia because they have so much capacity there and can serve all the markets, including North America.

That other C2 Hybrid SUV is expected to take the current Bronco Sport’s production space in Hermosillo.

Unless plans changed again.

FWIW, Borg is saying the same over at GMI....interesting to have a Spanish built product here...

This is the Spanish-made Bronco Sport I talked about. The plan is to also export them to the US. The reporting suggests it’s a distinct product, but it’s just a new Bronco Sport.

Escape or Explorer Sport. But yes it will be styled similarly to the boxy Escape and current Explorer.

Sounds interesting. The current Honda CRV looks pretty attractive, and kinda has that boxy, yet slightly rounded look to it, not super far off what the explorer styling offers. Something like this with a bit more flair would be a welcome change.

I wonder how that is going to work with importing the Bronco Sport replacement from Spain? Wouldn’t be affected by chicken tax or even a 10-15% Tarriff?

Definitely not the chicken tax as that is just for commercial vehicles.

Not sure about the tariff, but the EU tariff may be lower than the Mexican tariff anyway. Plus, Spanish production costs are the lowest in Europe.

Just my two cents,

ROW designed Bronco Sport that meets both US design rules as well as EU design standards,

can also be made in LHD and RHD, something the US never planned for its version of BS.

As mentioned in the article the ROW version includes PHEV which is probably tricky to retro fit to US BS.

Lots to like if they can pull it off, it also means that costs can be spread across more markets.
