Tailgate closed sensor/switch issue?

My 2024 F350 thinks my tailgate is open all of the time, therefore when I back up, the rear parking sensors are disabled. The tailgate dash light stays on constantly. It was intermittent at first, but I’m not able to do anything to clear it.

I am not familiar with the setup to know if it’s a sensor or physical switch.

Any help or troubleshooting advice is greatly appreciated. I’ve tried searching YouTube but either I’ve chosen the wrong wording, or there’s no video covering the topic.

Thanks a lot!

Much more likely to be a tailgate sensor/latch issue or wiring issue than a software issue. Lower the tailgate completely. Look at the two latch clips on the tailgate ends that grab the bed-side striker pins. Flip each latch to its closed position to make the sensors think the gate is shut. Then key the engine on. If that fixes the issue, then you're dealing with a latch alignment or striker pin adjustment problem. If the light stays on, then you're likely looking at a bad sensor in the latch/actuator, or maybe wiring.

Thanks a lot!

On the Super Dutys the most common cause is a wiring issue at the tailgate hinge or the connector for the camera/lock.

I’d start by checking the harness where it flexes when the gate opens, then unplug/reseat the tailgate connector and clean the latch. If it’s gone from intermittent to constant, the sensor or wiring has likely failed. On a 2024 this should be covered under warranty, so the dealer may be the fastest fix.

I had this issue on my 2024 F250.  It drove me nuts.  I could see the top left corner of the tailgate just ever so slightly out compared to the upper right corner.  It started about 6 months after I bought it.  I was thinking the lock in the tailgate wasn't quite closing 100%.  The post that the lock wraps around is adjustable, so I loosened it and moved it out, or towards myself to see if the lock would wrap around the post more.  I worked, and the corner of the tailgate was more flush.  I haven't had that light in 6 months.
