Ford is Bringing Back a Mustang Icon at the Detroit Auto Show, But Which One? (Mustang Black Horse SC)

I was talking to someone on the Ford Licensing side for the Mustang - Warner Bros. (owner of the Bullett name) has increased licensing fees to atmospheric levels.  The cost Warner Bros. presented to Ford is actually eye watering - way over and beyond what Ford paid to Shelby for the GT350 and GT500 names.

Once Netflix takes over WB, I could see them lowering that cost and tie it into a co-promotion with Ford for the Bullitt movie "now streaming on Netflix".

Thats exactly it. I get they don’t want to throw mountains of money at it because of a razor thin ROI but the Mustang line needs a serious shot in the arm.

Agreed, I hope the next redesign follows the trend we usually get with mustang, where you have two pretty similar generations, followed by a big leap forward. The mustang needs a new platform imo, the current platform apparently dates back all the way to the early 2000s, it's time for something new.

It makes a lot of sense as well because the current platform doesn't seem very flexible, it can't accommodate a sedan, it wasn't really engineered with hybrid or ev tech in mind. Personally, I would create a mustang platform that sets the mustang up for success for the next 20 years. A platform flexible enough to accommodate a sedan, or hybrid/EV powertrains for when the time is right so the platform is future proofed. Ideally lighter weight, and with more evocative proportions than the current chassis, shorter overhangs, longer wheelbase, a bit wider, etc.

That would be pretty expensive, but the mustang deserves it. Maybe they could do some sort of halo model using this same chassis, like a cobra or something to be build in flat rock alongside the mustang. A high end sports car that could generate enough revenue by itself to pay for the new platform several times over so they don't have to massively increase the price of the mustang to afford a new platform.

I remember seeing the current one for the first time, and I was like "that's it?  meh"

It doesn't look bad, it's just doesn't have the same impact the 2015 did.

Hey Robert - local auto museum has a shelby exhibit.  Pretty cool stuff.

  • 1966 Shelby AC Cobra MKIII 427 Roadster, On loan from The American Muscle Car Museum
  • 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500, On loan from The American Muscle Car Museum
  • 1983 Dodge Shelby Charger, On loan from The American Muscle Car Museum
  • 1986 Dodge Shelby Omni GLHS, On loan from Larry and Rachelle Weymouth
  • 1989 Dodge Shelby Dakota Pickup, On loan from The American Muscle Car Museum
  • 1999 Shelby Series 1 Roadster, On loan from The American Muscle Car Museum
  • 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500 Super Snake Coupe, On loan from Rickey & Pat Stone Collection, Calhoun, GA
  • 2022 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Heritage Edition, On loan from The American Muscle Car Museum

One of THE MOST exciting Shelby products that I ever drove was a modified '86 GLHS on a road course - a lot to handle, but waayyyyy fun.  Carroll Shelby had 4 or 6 of them - I've have to dig up the photos of his garage and post them up one day.

That’s the problem with companies saving money by doing evolution design,

they keep a lot of overall shape and do styling fiddles and tech under the skin.

Or, you could be like Chevrolet, change the entire platform yet Camaro looked the same,

now that was a waste.

I thought so as well, maybe the guy I talked to didn't realize that. But for the bronco reveal, a rtr version makes sense. Not related to this but he attended some dealer meetings and confirmed other product info like the mustang sedan is a stretched s650 instead of being its own design, and that ev truck patent image is really close to the CE1 truck design. Apparently it will have a lot of accessories.

Again, not related to this, but just some other interesting product tidbits while we're discussing future product.

Hopefully this isn't all we get. It's ok, I'm sure it'll grow on me. There's just something going on with Ford design at the moment. The ideas are there, but the execution seems to be struggling. Maybe their new head of design will right the ship, but it just feels like the design talent they have right now isn't what it was 5-10 years ago.

This appears to be a factory supercharged package for the GT or Dark Horse because it seems like it says 'SC' on the fender. A few on the Mustang7G forum noticed the same. There's nothing 'Boss' or 'Cobra' about this, so I'm guessing this is one of few to be revealed/announced.

I guess everyone is completely ignoring the new front fascia and hood?!

I think part of the issue here is also that they already have the GTD, so any GT500/Cobra/whatever they call it will have to slot between GTD and Dark Horse, both design and performance wise.  I also think there are only so many ways to dress up a design (the 24+ styling) that many are just "meh" about to begin with

No, I noticed.  It doesn't do anything for me.  Maybe it's a package for the Dark Horse?  It's a similar front end treatment, which I think is why it doesn't do much for me.

I was responding to the post from Mustang7G-its more than a sticker job with a supercharger going by that photo alone.

The Front facia in that photo is completely different then anything else we've seen so far in other Mustang variants.

This is what I was concerned about with getting the GTD first. It kinda makes everything that comes after feel tame and hard to get excited about.

Why?  The GTD is essentially unobtainable.  A GT500/Cobra/whatever should be more available.  Not at GT levels, but much more reasonable than the GTD.

There needs to be a "bridge" model with a 2.7L Ecoboost....an ST-Line if you will...

Well, ST-Line is a sticker/visual package, but I get your point.  I think they figure it would be too similar to the GT to bother offering another powertrain.

If I show you the iPhone 37, and then later show the iPhone 20, the 20 won't be as exciting as the 37 by nature.   Sure, the GT500/Cobra/whatever this thing is will be more "obtainable" (given Ford's pricing of late, it may even push close to six digits), but it's still not as exciting as the GTD.

These was a push internally for a return of the Mustang SVO, but it never transpired.  That was a missed opportunity.

I seriously doubt that we'll see another Shelby anything for quite a while - if ever.

Ford wants to capture an entire new generation, while disposing of iconic names.  It runs counter to Ford's insistence on heritage branding though.
