If c2 is Ford's greatest success in recent memory, cd6 up until this point has been one of their biggest disappointments. The fact that it's so underutilized is depressing, especially when it seems like a capable platform.

I think it boils down to the market-I guess Ford was expecting to sell larger cars when the C2 met 70-80% of the market needs. It also might boil down to desperation (C2 platform usage) to a point too. Edited March 4 by Sherminator98

They make grandiose plans then those plans get scaled back for various reasons.

It looks like a maverick and a dodge nitro got drunk and snuck into a garage together, and 9 months later this thing popped out. Haha, interesting analogy. I actually liked the side profile of the gray one as a starting point but I didn’t build it out from there. Perhaps I’ll see how that one could evolve. Back in 2008 Falcon/Territory platform was offered as the start of a global RWD strategy (crown Vic replacement in Middle East markets) but Mullaly would have none of it when D3 was the chosen FWD/AWD platform. Fields had to wait until Mullaly retired before green light for CD6 then saw it whittled away to two vehicles. The big makeup go Ford Aus was developing T6 Ranger/Everest/ Mazda BT50 and then all the current T6.2s Biukding products thst have to meet regs in over a 100 countries is really challenging. I remember all the speculation over GRWD chassis....then, D3 appeared and POOF....it was gone....

Yeah, I don't think CD6 has anything to do with D3. It may have some relation to CD4, but more in electrical components rather than the platform itself.

bzcat
CD6 came about because Ford wanted to leverage other longitude powertrain investment (mainly for F-150) for its large unibody vehicles. There was also CD6 Edge and CD6 Mustang planned, and possibly more (e.g. CD6 Taurus and Continental doesn't seem that far fetched if Flat Rock had been converted to build CD6). But at the end, there is no way Ford was going to retool Chicago, Oakville, and Flat Rock all to build CD6 so obviously those other projects didn't happen. But supposedly, CD6 Edge had completely design and engineering, just didn't proceed to prototyping.

I know we never will, but it would be pretty cool to see all these stillborn projects over the years.
