I've always criticized GM for looking at vehicle business cases individually and not as a corporation.  Can you make individual positive business cases for having 3 different versions of the same vehicle?  Probably.  But somebody higher up should be asking what if we just made one?  Would that be even more profitable?

 

I realize there were dozens of factors but in hindsight dropping the other cd6 vehicles seems to have been a misstep.

I forget, did the CD6 products being dropped happen under Hackett or Farley?

Mark Fields, he first proposed them straight after Mulally left

but then,  the business cases for anything other  than CD6

Explorer/Aviator  just didn’t stack up and there was a lot of 

push back on going away from FWD/AWD that was working.

 

Twinning Explorer with Edge would have helped, imagine if

Ford  haddeveloped Explorer with two wheelbase lengths

like it did with Expedition but as Explorer and Explorer Sport..

That was that nebulous period between when Fields was let go and Hackett took over. IIRC, it was during the very beginning of Hackett’s tenure all that stuff got the axe.

And raw to the nerve was the failure to move the needle on electrification,

Fields was fired and Hackett his replacement was charged with that priority.

It’s not surprising that CD6 became a lower priority when the focus was on 

restarting what would be Mach E, getting a BEV Lightning and organising

supply of BEVs from VW as the fast track to Bill Ford’s good graces.

Not much new info in this article, but they have some new renderings........still just a massaged Bronco, but a different look than the ones that came before.

I like that but I think Lincoln will stick with the design language they have now. That is unless they try something fresh with this model. I haven’t gotten AI to produce a great side profile yet, but it did an OK job by using the refreshed Nautilus here. I’m actually more curious of what they do with the interior.

The new look does lend itself well to that more boxy shape.
