Ford Recalls 412,774 Explorer SUVs Again Over Rear Suspension Fracture Risk - Autoblog

Ford is recalling certain 2017-2019 Explorer SUVs because their rear suspension toe links may fracture. Some 412,774 vehicles are affected, but what makes this recall particularly irritating for owners is that it concerns a problem that has plagued the SUV in the past. The NHTSA says that this is an expansion of previous NHTSA recall 21V537, in which 644,055 examples of the 2013-2017 Explorer were named. In other words, upgrading to the newer 2017-2019 Explorer hasn’t rid owners of the problem.

Ford Latest Recall Crisis Leaves Thousands Of SUVs Stuck Without A Fix | Carscoops

We haven’t even hit March yet, but Ford has already racked up more recalls than Hyundai and General Motors combined. They’re now cementing that lead with an expanded recall that involves 24,690 crossovers including plug-in hybrid versions of the 2023-2025 Escape and 2023-2026 Lincoln Corsair.

Ford Truck Recall: 4.4 Million Trucks Affected

Update: The original version of this story stated that over-the-air updates would be deployed in May. Ford confirmed that those OTA updates will actually begin on March 17. The story has been updated.

Ford Motor Company is recalling over 4 million vehicles due to a software issue. Several models, including the automaker’s best-selling F-150 pickup, might have an integrated trailer module (ITM) that could lose communication capability with the vehicle. This could prevent a trailer’s brake lights and indicators from functioning.

The recall affects the 2022-2026 Ford F-250, the 2026 Ford E-Transit, the 2022-2026 Lincoln Navigator, the 2022-2026 Ford Expedition, the 2022-2026 Ford Maverick, the 2024-2026 Ford Ranger, and the 2021-2026 Ford F-150.

The Ford F-Series accounts for the bulk of the recall—3.4 million vehicles. Ford is recalling 412,105 Mavericks, 317,604 Expeditions, 129,836 Rangers, and 75,029 Navigators. The recall affects 4,380,609 models

According to the recall report, a software vulnerability "allows for a potential race condition" to occur between the ITM and CAN Standby Control bit. A race condition occurs when multiple processes access shared data at the same time, with the results depending on execution order, and it’s this unpredictable timing that can cause the failure.

This is hilarious, maybe ford should have waited a bit to give out those initial quality bonuses to everyone. And before you say these were old vehicles that were before Ford’s new quality push, look at all the 2026MY vehicles in the list.

Not in the eyes of the NHTSA, apparently. A bad fuel pump affecting a broad swath of a product would likely be handled under a TSB, unless the defect could cause a fire risk. Here,  the software glitch may result in loss of trailer brake function.

A recall is a recall. The vehicle is a system of hardware and software. In the end, the customer is affected, which is all that matters.

You have to be kidding.  You are right, completely different, but to the "Fix or repair daily" crowd it is the same. For a Ford guy it is tough to listen to the Toyota ads.."The best new vehicles make the best used vehicle".

So you expect Ford to be perfect, like Toyota?  You'll never see zero recalls on mass market vehicles.  Software errors that can be fixed OTA are way different than engine failures or things that require a dealer visit.

Key 2025 Model Year Recalls
  • 2025 Camry (and various 2025-2026 models): Over 1 million vehicles are recalled due to a software error in the rearview camera system.
  • Various 2025 Models: A widespread, major recall (approx. 591,000 vehicles) affects models like the RAV4, Camry, Highlander, 4Runner, Tacoma, Venza, and others, due to potential instrument panel, or "blackout," failures that stop displaying critical info.
  • 2025 Toyota Tacoma: Recalls affecting certain, newly introduced 2025 models.
  • 2023-2026 Prius: Various, including recalls for a potential short circuit in the rear door switch that could cause the door to open unexpectedly.
  • 2025–2026 Camry & Corolla Cross Hybrid: Approximately 55,000 vehicles are recalled due to a potential loose bolt in the hybrid inverter that may cause a fire.
  • 2025 Sienna: A recall was issued for models with second-row seats that may have been improperly welded

Agreed, the maverick has had a lot of software recalls, but is generally regarded as the most reliable, or one of the most reliable trucks on sale because the baseline mechanicals are so stout. Giving my truck to a dealership for half a day so they can install a software update is a lot different than needing a transmission replacement.

Ford's retort to the "Fixed Or Repaired Daily" was For Outstanding Reliability (and) Durability.

See list above.

Understood....and I would always defend Ford on that point.  But who is ALWAYS getting the headlines??  And in defending the software issues I get the point, but while some may be fixed  remotely, some are a nuisance factor.  I'm going through that now...constant "System shutting down to conserve battery"  Took it to dealer a few months ago and they said "battery fine"-I still had about 10 months on my 36 month warranty.

Now I see there is a recall for batteries!

I never referenced Toyota or any other brand in my statement, nor do I expect any machine to be perfect, but anytime there is a recall all most people will see is 4.4 million Ford vehicles impacted by a recall and they won’t even read past the headline to see it was only s/w that will be corrected by OTA. When you consider Ford had a record number of recalls last year, the average consumer will likely just think it’s more of the same. My point is, every recall matters whether simple or major, and your quality reputation is getting a death by a thousand cuts.

Let’s see how the rest of 2026 goes before passing judgement on their quality improvements. I’m hoping we will see the progress.

With today's auto supply chains much of the hardware and software come from suppliers. Tough job to monitor/control that. The only way to completely control that is vertical integration but even with that there will be problem's. Ford's software engineers can also make mistakes and produce buggy software.

I mean last year we had what? 126 recalls? This year we're nearly 2 months in and we've had 3. If people can't see that as a massive improvement, I don't know what to say.

To be fair, IIRC, there were some in January, but I decided to do a new thread in February instead of dredging up the old one.

Ford Recalls 1.7 Million Vehicles Because Drivers Are Flying Blind | Carscoops

The first recall covers roughly 889,950 vehicles, including the 2020-22 Ford Escape and 2020-24 Explorer, and 2020-22 Lincoln Corsair and 2020-24 Aviator. On those models the issue is oddly disorienting.

The second recall is nearly as large, affecting about 849,310 vehicles, including the 2021-26 Ford Bronco and 2021-24 Edge. Here the issue is heat. Under certain conditions the infotainment system’s APIM module can overheat, in part due to its proximity to the HVAC ducts and audio head unit, and temporarily shut down to protect itself.

I guess if there's a positive, it's this:

The fix for both recalls will ultimately come via software updates, though Ford says those updates aren’t ready yet. Once they’re finalized, owners will be notified and repairs will be performed free of charge.

It doesn't specify if it'll be an over the air update or if you have to actually go in to the dealer.

I'll keep an eye open for any Edge information. It sounds like units with Sync 4 and the large screen. If your center air ducts are aiming at the top corners of the screen. 🤷‍♂️
