Toyota hybrids 0W-8 oil?!?

Recommended Posts

Just bought daughter a 2026 Rav4 hybrid and it takes 0W-8 engine oil. I have never heard of anything less than 0w-20.  I know it's for fuel economy but this seems one step away from water.   Anything else use super thin oil?

A Toyota?  What's next, one of these to replace your F-150?

Trust me I had to grit my teeth and hold my nose.  Still not a toyota fan but she didn't like the Escape or the Bronco Sport and Edge is gone.  Her fiancée is a die hard toyota fan who drives a Tundra so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it.  But it's her vehicle and that's what she wanted.  And honestly it's pretty nice and gets 41/38 mpg.  And the buying experience was very good.

Oooh, a 3,000 lb payload - fer chrissakes, our Mavericks beat it by 1,000 lbs.

Huh?  Mavericks don't have 4,000 lbs of payload!  Towing, yes, but not payload.  Hell, my F350 doesn't even have 4k lbs of payload.

Oops, meant towing - thanks for the correction :) I'll put 3.5K on my trailer (trailer weighs 350lbs) and call it a day with a smidge to spare....lol

PS: I read the "full spec" sheet for it, it has a 7,700 lb towing capacity - I guess I'll have to trade in the Mav for a Ranger....even though Ranger is "only" rated at 7,500 lb towing....

What we have here, Gentleman, is a complete failure in parenting. Let us all learn from this heart wrenching calamity and not let our sons and daughters go down this wicked path.

It could be worse. 7 or 8 years ago, my son, who lives in Germany, bought a Hyundai i10, that I paid for. Truth be told, it's turned out to be a pretty reliable car. for a shitbox,,,,,,,

In my defense your honor I put forth exhibit 1 - Ford's lack of a RAV4 hybrid competitor...........

Huh?  40 Escape Hybrids with 50 miles of 30303 (used Atlanta since I have no idea where your daughter lives).....

Escape just isn't competitive on styling and probably features with all of the decontenting.  She just didn't like it.

It wasn’t back in 2022 when we bought a RAV4 hybrid instead of an Escape hybrid either. You had to get the top level model to get Auto up front windows. What the hell Ford. I’m sure it’s just only gotten worse.

Where are the pictures of said car? 😎

Another interesting aspect about the 2026 RAV4 engine, beyond the use of 0W-8 motor oil, is that it's beltless. All accessory and drive belts (e.g., for the alternator, water pump, HVAC system, etc.) have been replaced with electric motors.

You cheaped out and didn't get her a moonroof?  Really?

She didn't care and this one didn't have it.  They were difficult to find - found that one on the website the day it was submitted to the factory.
