What off-road vehicles would you like to see Ford bring to market?

Recommended Posts

There's been a lot of discussion about this in recent weeks and months, all the investments Ford's making in off-road products, and how they want to offer more of them. So I thought it would be fun to get a whole wishlist discussion going.

I've included some of the stuff I would like to see, varying from super duties to the mustang raptor or off-road supercar (We don't know what it'll look like so I rendered both road going versions of t1, and lifted supercars to get some ideas, I prefer the lifted supercars over t1).

Let me know what other off-road products you would like to see from Ford.

Ranger Raptor hybrid with Pro Power Onboard would be appealing for off-road enthusiasts.

Oh, and adding a regular Ranger hybrid would be great also. I sometimes drive into my backyard which qualifies as off-roading, right?

Here’s my theory. People like the off-road look, not necessarily the ability to go off road. I think all of these vehicles that aren’t boxy SUVs or trucks will be flops. Here is what I would like to see:

1. Bronco sport offered with extended length and 2wd

2. Fixed roof bronco - this could be a 4Runner and ineos grenadier competitor all in one and would look better than the Everest

3. Suzuki jimny competitor - nothing like this exists in the USA now, much smaller than the bronco sport and much cheaper too. Maybe this could start a new market like the maverick did.

4. Super duty ranger

1.) Rumored Maverick SUV will be the answer

2.) Alleged Lincoln variant

3.) It's called Puma and is in Europe

4.) Will not happen in NA - too much overlap to F150

Puma is not a jimny competitor. It’s essentially a hatchback and the jimny is a cheap basic 4x4. Not to mention the price difference. If ford made something similar to the jimny, but gave it bronco-ish design and kept it around the mid 20’s in price, it would be a decent seller in my opinion. Not for families, but the off road crowd looking for a smaller vehicle for tight trails and singles who need a cheap vehicle or a 4x4. At those prices it could even get some utv cross shopping.

So I posted this in another thread, but it's relevant so I'll post it here as well. With Farley saying he wants to do more affordable performance cars, but ones that blend on and off road performance more, also saying if they did something like a new focus RS, it would be remixed to be different and better, I had an idea. A sporty hatchback that blends rally racing with on-road performance like the old school escorts. Let me know if you like this.

Because brands already swap fascias, I'd also like to see Ford try what some other brands are trying, and that's have two different front ends, one that's more retro and traditional, and one that's futuristic and bold.

(Plus a racing version for fun)

Sounds like the Slate EV pickup without the 4x4.....my prediction is that it will flop here in the US but it will get a lot of attention at debut.

I still think the RS 200 design needs some more sex appeal added to it, and some design adjustments to make it a little less bulbous and more exotic. That being said, I had AI cook up a more realistic production version of the concept and it gave me that. It looks kinda promising imo for a fun off-road car. The small size makes me hopeful it would be a little more affordable, but that's probably wishful thinking.

But isn't that Bronco Sport?

Jimny is much smaller than a Bronco sport and would be much cheaper as well. It’s a true sub compact. If the bronco sport were to grow larger, it would also free up some room for this size of vehicle.

I actually was in Cozumel last week and saw a few Jimnys on the road.  They're tiny.....definitely smaller than Bronco Sport.  I'd question the appeal of something that small here.

Now we're cooking with gas. I've said before how the RS 200 concept has an attractive front end, but the roofline and rear end needed some work. It looked a little awkward and bulbous. The shape of the roofline looked less like a mid-engine sports car and more like a model 3, it just didn't convey mid-engine performance car and looked more like a blob.

So I merged it with other sports cars like the Elise to get a sportier, more seductive roofline and quarter panel. I actually really liked how this turned out. I could totally see how this could be a fun off-road sports car to rival things like the cayman, c8, and lotus models, but in a way that was differentiated.

This looks sick as hell. Hopefully you guys can see why I saw if you're gonna do an off-road supercar like Farley wants, make it an actual supercar, not yet another truck or suv that just accelerates like a supercar. It doesn't have to be a trillion dollars and built in super limited numbers. We see there's a market for the kinda entry level mid-engine sports car at that 70, 80,90k price point where they're selling in the thousands. This could be ford's version of that.

Everything on my list is easily doable without huge new investments:

  1. Mustang Rally (or RS) - just like Porsche 911 Dakar but doesn't require inheritance or ponzi crypto scam level capital to buy
  2. RS200 style dedicated off-road sports car. I would pair this with the next GT development (assuming there is one). Basically a smooth pavement version called Ford GT and a rough pavement version calls Ford RS.
  3. Lincoln T6 SUV
  4. Bring Ford Everest to North America
  5. Off road package/trim level option for Lincoln Navigator - Take Expedition Tremor hardware and let Lincoln buyers in on the fun. Ford literally has nothing to lose to give this a try.
  6. Explorer Sport to fill the gap left behind by Escape. Could be based on next gen Territory or the rumored Maverick CUV (I think they are the same thing just different assembly locations)
  7. Add a smaller SUV below Everest using T6 (this could be paired with one of Ford's low cost pickup in China). I'm thinking the size of Escape but body on frame. Like the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ. In case you are wondering, FJ is the exact same size as the 2nd/3rd gen 4Runner. So a Ford competitor could be roughly be the size of original Explorer

I didn't go over the pickup side but between FX4, Tremor, and Raptor, I think Ford got the truck side covered pretty good.

They are fun to drive though, and don’t forget the power of a low price tag. I don’t think a two door would be worth it, but the 4 Dr version might work. While it’s rear legroom is tiny, it’s not any worse than most other subcompacts.

Yeah, my goal for that is I thought the lifted mustang raptor renderings I'd seen up unto this point were trying too hard. Massive black cladding on the fenders, Ford lettering in the grille, skid plates that felt like they weren't even integrated into the mustang's design. It just looked tacky.

So I wanted my own take on that lifted mustang look that was a little more tasteful. A mild lift kit, and some clean lights in the grille, not much else is needed to sell the look imo.

That reminds me of the old Jeep Commander.

I like the way you think. My biggest concern with Farley doubling down on off-road performance vehicles is just making everything the same. A boxy, lifted truck or suv with massive tires and Ford lettering in the grille. That stuff isn't bad, but I don't want that to be all Ford does.

That's what I really like your recommendations, a blend of SUVs, trucks, and cars. It gives enthusiasts more variety, and makes Ford a more interesting brand.

I don't think I could afford to replace the windshield on that.

Well then don't think 🤣. But no, in all seriousness, if Ford ever brought an off-road supercar like that to market, I could see it using similar windshield tech to the gt. Which in turn uses a similar type of glass to smart phones. It's apparently a lot more resilient against impacts than normal glass.

Any production model would obviously have A-pillars, and thus a "normal" windshield" vs. what is seen in that rendering....
