rmc523
Ford CEO Jim Farley Says Model Y, Model 3 Rival On The Way "We really want to bet on all of it. We're going to have an all-hybrid lineup. So Bronco...everything you can buy at Ford will have a hybrid. We'll also have EREVs for towing. We'll have an all-electric, affordable vehicle to compete with Model Y and Model 3," Ford CEO Jim Farley said during a recent appearance on the Spike's Car Radio podcast. Not sure if this is just referring to what we know of (CE1 "Escape") or if it's something else.
Zestyg
I’m more excited about the CE1 sedan than the crossover tbh. I own an Escape hybrid and while I love it I’m increasingly concluding that it would have made much more sense for Ford to have essentially the Bronco Sport + Fusion rather than Bronco Sport + Escape. If they made the CE1 crossover even more car-like than the Escape is that’d be good IMO. Like a Ford version of the Ioniq 5.
DeluxeStang
While this is exciting, I believe he's referring to the CE1 truck which he sees as an indirect rival to something like the model Y. Then again, we do also know that if Ford can stick to their plans for once, a smaller and larger sedan using CE1 are both planned at some point. So we'll see. Maybe a model 3 rival, and a larger su7 rival? Call them escort and Galaxie, or maybe falcon.
DeluxeStang
This vid is a couple of years old, but it's intriguing, it's a short interview of about 7 mins, and Farley discusses a multitude of topics. One is when he's asked point blank if there's room in the lineup for another performance car model that isn't the mustang, he gives a very powerful yes. But then he transitions this into a discussion on affordable EVs, and what he refers to as "new silhouettes" which is the exact term he used to describe the CE1 when he said it's not really a truck, but rather a new silhouette. The example he gave was a new silhouette that blended a crossover and a car form factor and landed somewhere in-between. He said these new types of silhouettes are needed to get better aero. Applying this same approach to a truck would yield something like a new ute, which is a body side Farley has said he wants to bring back. Lots of maybes and trying to connect dots without having the full picture, so we'll see if I'm calling this right. But if things like the CE1 truck and crossover are less like a maverick and BS, and more like a ute and evolve mach-e style crossover, you'd be able to see why he sees them as model 3 and Y rivals. rmc523
I hope the predicted product onslaught does come true, as it's disheartening seeing competitors reveal multiple vehicles at auto shows (or debuting regardless of location), while Ford releases the latest sticker package on various models for the 5th year in a row lol.
Sherminator98
My guess that the X and 3 model competitor is the next CE1 product to come out after the pickup.

Vehicles It's depressing as hell. I hope Ford has a Detroit auto show 2015 style event in the coming years. Where at that show, they revealed the new raptor, gt 350r, and gt and we were all on cloud 9. It's still way, way off, but with Ford celebrating their 125th anniversary in 2028, I'm kinda hoping that's a massive blowout event. One where the next gen mustang, bronco, bs, maverick, mach-e, and off-road supercar are all revealed at the same event. That would be next level. Until then, get ready for more stickers. Reports have NG 150, Bronco Sport, and Maverick coming in 2028, so if correct, we’ll get at least 3 new Model 2029 vehicles.

jpd80
Or is this just Farley restating that Ford is working on all these things with no clear indication of delivery timeline?

Yea, pretty much. Ford’s big shots don’t have much else interesting to talk about amid the current drought of new product introductions. So why not embellish Jimbo’s fantasy of chasin’ Tesla with vague and meaningless prattle?

Seems like it - we've been hearing the same "wait, it's coming!!" for however many years now.......shit or get off the pot lol. We're at least hopefully closer to something sometime this year. Unfortunately, it seems like Ford is going with its obnoxiously long time between debut and on-sale date. 1

My take is that Ford is nowhere near as advanced on its vehicle plans as people think and there’s plenty on the to do list considering how much funding and resources were ripped away from Ford Blue plus the recent large write down on BEV developments.

Yeah I like hearing about these potential product ideas, it's better than getting no info or teasers. But it feels like a lot of talking with nothing of substance coming out of it. I'd much rather see a nice concept than hearing about all the stuff that's supposedly right around the corner. As for when Ford might reveal stuff, maybe during Goodwood? They've revealed and shown off stuff there before, including EVs.

Unfortunately, it seems like Ford is going with its obnoxiously long time between debut and on-sale date. For years, Ford has been telling anyone who would listen that hybrids, PHEV and EREV were all unnecessary complications and no, BEVs were it. Now, Ford has to unwind all the heavy commitments to BEVs and redirect development funding back to Ford Blue, find engineers capable of doing the developments and big part, start getting products on the conveyor. I don’t see any of that happening inside the next two years. There’s an awful lot of emphasis being put on next year’s midsized BEV pickup and this Is an example of Ford getting caught up in its own expectation/mission accomplished loop. Get back to what means something to customers now, not how much we can charge them.

This is BS man. I get changes in strategy, but Farley is so focused on chasing the latest shiny thing that it feels like he can't make progress in any one particular direction. Hopefully Ford starts to get their shit together and sticks with stuff, so we can actually get some new products relatively soon.

It takes a long time to turn the ship around and it also shows how heavily Ford was committed to a 100% BEV future. and Ford says $30K starting prices but you just know Ford wants $50k customers. its the same old worn out strategy of BS “pricing”

The frustrating part as you and DeluxeStang mentioned is that there's a lot of talkin' by the head honcho but not much action that people outside FoMoCo can discern at this point in terms of progress bringing those products to market quickly, in high volume and with high quality. Maybe CE1 product development and manufacturing milestones are perfectly on track. I'm cautiously optimistic that's the case, and it's fine if the big shots at Ford keep details under wraps if only for competitive reasons. But Jimbo spoutin' BS like We really want to bet on all of it doesn't help matters.
