Quote Toyota Motor North America may build a new $2 billion assembly plant adjacent to its current Texas truck plant with construction starting as early as this year, according to documents filed with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Full details of the project, codenamed “Project Orca,” remain largely undisclosed, including what vehicles it would build. However, the automaker’s application seeking state and local tax incentives indicates that the new assembly plant would add an estimated 2,000 jobs to Toyota’s current complex in Bexar County, near San Antonio. If the project is approved, it would become the automaker’s sixth U.S. assembly plant when output begins in 2030. The automaker’s 2.2-million-square-foot Texas assembly plant builds the full-size, body-on-frame Toyota Sequoia SUV and Toyota Tundra pickup. It has more than 3,700 direct employees on-site, along with another 5,600 working at various suppliers on the campus. Toyota also recently built a $531 million axle plant on-site. “Project Orca involves a highly competitive and ongoing site selection process. At the highest level, Toyota is focused on selecting a location and site which offers significant financial incentives and ongoing operating efficiencies,” the automaker’s application for incentives reads. “Importantly, due to the critical path milestones that must be achieved in order for construction to commence in 2026 (with production commencing in 2030), Project Orca would necessarily need to be co-located at, or in close proximity to, an existing Toyota manufacturing facility that has (or will have) access to sufficient transportation infrastructure,” the application reads. It was around then they moved all Tacoma production to Mexico and brought Sequoia in from TMMI (Princeton, In) starting with the 2022 MY. Tundra and Sequoia share many components similar to F-series and Expedition, and Tacoma was already being produced in Mexico for Latin markets.
