Mercedes AMG GT - what were they thinking??

Recommended Posts

I can tell I'm getting older because I seriously can't wrap my head around some styling and fashion trends.

Seems like the current in thing is bland/chunky looking things that very plain/boring IMO to me.

For another example, see the new Jag EV

The front isn’t terrible. Anything from Lexus looks a lot worse to me. That rear end though, woof. Wtf is that?

The concept was a little better - the production version doubled the black panel and added an unnecessary lightbar across the top.

It stems from the flawed nature of design education these days. I've toured art center in Pasadena pondering attending there so I've seen it first hand. It's all about emphasizing trying to be different, which is important, but it feels like a lot of the designers there don't know how to be different in a way that's better.

When you have a bunch of people who had it beaten into their heads that they need to challenge conventional design, these are the sorts of results you get. Stuff that's very unattractive and weird. Blend that with all the safety, aero, and manufacturing constraints brands have these days that make designs very bland, and it's the worst of both worlds. Boring proportions and shapes with ugly details that placed more emphasis on trying to look different rather than trying to look good.

Yeah that concept is so much better imo. Even small details like how the black bar is just a clear, neat graphic with straight lines, it looks tidy. Then the production version, that same graphic arches at the top, and has those weird bits on the bottom.
