This Is Ferrari's First EV: The Luce

Recommended Posts

When I saw these reports and images coming out, I thought they were AI, or some student project. This design is horrible to be a Ferrari, I don't know what they were thinking.

I've honestly not been the biggest fan of Ferrari design of tha last gen of models (their current crop are better) - I think the early 2000s (or older) Ferraris balance performance with "pretty" design, whereas models since then often have too many design elements for my liking.  This goes the other way, with an anonymous block that looks like a student started forming a car shape on a foam/clay model and then just stopped part way through.

I just want to know how these projects get approved.........Does anyone actually sit back and look at it and think "does this look good?"  "does this fit the brand?"

Like I said in the other thread:

I just knew that after the Purosangue came out that the Prancing Horse threw a shoe.

The Purosangue looks much better then the Luce though

The big issue with what I've been seeing with EV design is the beltlines are extremely high vs what is normally seen on ICE products-I get that there is a battery pack for the floor, but there are examples of other products that are EVs that don't suffer with this issue as much.

I'm also guessing the Luce is supposed to be some sort of sedan/crossover too

I'm shocked. I can't believe that Ferrari approved of this. I know some haven't always liked the other Ferrari designs as of late, but I've always liked them. I just don't understand this one though.  The Apple guy designed it and I'm wondering if this is similar to the design of the Apple car that was cancelled a couple of years ago.

The Luce was designed jointly by Ferrari’s Centro Stile in Maranello and LoveFrom, the design firm founded by Jony Ive—the man behind the original iPhone’s iconic look. But Ferrari says this wasn’t just a styling exercise. Engineers shaped the surfaces around aerodynamic and functional needs first, and LoveFrom essentially came in afterward to "dress" the car.

Sounds like Ferrari was the primary issue here-the Interior is alright, even though it has a big drop of Apple/Ive design language in it.

Yeah, I have no issue with Ferrari doing an EV.

This product is a case of making an EV a "Ferrari", not making a Ferrari an EV.

In other words, they slapped some Ferrari styling cues (if I'm being generous) and badging on an EV, rather than designing a Ferrari with an EV powertrain....

If you read some of the articles about the car, there's no questioning that a tremendous amount of Ferrari engineering expertise is built into this car. The shame is that none of that will matter because Ferrari is supposed to represent the pinnacle of sexy stying and this abomination is the exact opposite. IMO this is what happens when an automotive enterprise like Ferrari is managed by 'professional' managers who have no concept of the history of Ferrari. They have demonstrably no sense of Ferrari's place in the automotive cosmos. The board of Ferrari should kick these leaders to the curb on their asses. /rant

I don’t understand any of this. Ford went the aero route with their 3 row EV because they were trying to get more range from a smaller battery so that the vehicle could be more affordable. Ferrari doesn’t need to worry about affordability or range, so why design it that way? All they had to do was design a car that looked like a Ferrari and put some batteries in it.

The big shots at Nissan can use this in an advertising campaign. "Introducing The New Nissan Leaf. Can You Tell Its Looks from a $640k Ferrari?"

Kind of like what Ford did back in the '70s:

Former Ferrari Boss: Luce EV 'Risks Destroying A Legend'

Speaking with the press this week, the 78-year-old former Ferrari boss shared his brutal take on the Luce. Italian news agency askanews quoted di Montezemolo as saying:

'If I were to say what I really think, I’d be doing Ferrari a disservice. We risk destroying a legend, and I’m truly sorry about that. I hope they at least remove the prancing horse from that car.'

That’s not all di Montezemolo said in his otherwise brief take on Ferrari’s first production car without a combustion engine. His candid assessment of the design also included an indirect jab: “[Luce] is certainly a car that at least the Chinese won’t copy.”
