$30,000 EV Truck Spy Shots (Autopian found it)

Something in my gut is telling me that women will flip out over this little truck. The cute/adorable vibe may result in the skunk truck becoming irresistible.

 

As Alan Clarke recently said regarding the skunk truck: “We keep using the 'fun to drive' moniker. That's very important to us. It has to tug at your heartstrings.”

The cameo team did a great job of hiding as much as they did. They are out and about in California and Michigan.

 

The front end does have more of a slope to it like a Tesla Model Y. Blocky but sloped.

 

This vehicle is more crew cab than it is bed. Think of this more of a CUV with a bed, much like a ute.

 

Those door handles I believe are just well done cameo. Think Mach-E style door handles.

 

The name is still under wraps, but it’s down to Ranchero or Maverick EV the last I heard.

Right, my point was just that we couldn't tell the exact level from the photos I was able to grab.  There wasn't an obvious "there's the door panel" line to reference.

edit: checking back to when Doug Field was leaving and Farley took an IG photo standing next to the truck, it seems about 8 inches shorter than Farley. 60 inches might be right.

Farley (based upon the F1 photo op in 2023 when he stood next to Verstappen, Perez, Horner, and Riccardo he appeared ~2 inches shorter than Riccardo who is 5’10”) is at most 5’8” in heels.

as you can see he is perhaps 7 to 8 inches taller than the truck here. That provides 60 inches.

 

Sure....mine was a crude line version.  Like I said, I want to overlay the two images when I get home later this evening to see what comes of that...

It definitely looks to have a bigger cab than Maverick....the midgate feature will help with longer items.....we'll see if the glass is fixed or not.

 

Yup......that confirms my suspicion that those handles are fake.  They just didn't look right to the eye, plus with all the aero talk, those are a major aero sticking point in the industry right now....didn't make sense for them to do all this other aero work and leave the handles.

Maverick EV just falls under my personal hate for having two completely un-related (design) products with the same name.  Yes, I know there's Mustang Mach-E, but at least it has a sub name that's not just "EV".

 

I know Ranchero has history, and understand they're going for the whole "sedan-ish product with a bed" view, but Ranchero just sounds old and outdated to me.

 

I don't advocate using it since it was on a sedan, but had Ford not used it before, Fusion would actually be a neat name for it (i.e. Fusion of technology, car/truck sort of fusion, etc.)

Yeah, if you say you are driving a ranchero, I instantly think you are 80 years old. I hate Maverick EV for the same reasons as you, plus it’s just lazy.

I wonder if the headlights and leading edge of the hood are a little higher than the camo cutouts for the lights on this mule, as we often see lights at least partially covered. Because if that's the true level of the top of the front fascia, it's super, super droopy. We know it's gonna droop, but hopefully it's a little taller than that. 

 

 

As for names, Ford apparently filed quite a few parents for new names awhile back, so maybe it'll wear a new name instead.

Talking to RMC about using new names instead, maybe the truck will be called one of these.  Of these names, Fathom would be my pick for a truck. Fits the f naming scheme for trucks and fits the truck image better than fuze or hize does, which sound like crossover or car names. Mythic almost gives me like performance halo EV vibes.

Well, seeing as the Ford Maverick is a recycled sedan name that is going over well as a compact truck - I can see Ford naming the upcoming "skunk truck" Ford Fusion....

I guess that’s my cue 😂. I personally hate this side profile. The windshield slopes way too much for a truck. The square/geometric wheel designs that everyone seems to be using these days also needs to go. And frameless doors kinda suck imo.

 

 

I also think there’s a good amount of extra camo here disguising it pretty well. My guess is a bit more extreme for where the belt line actually is. I’m guessing it’s right on the red line below, almost in line with the door handles. I vaguely remember an article saying it might use mach e style door handles. If that’s the case, then the door handles would be right at the bottom of the window. This also lines up better with where the hood meets the body. It also wouldn’t look right if the belt line didn’t line up with the top of the bed, so I think there’s probably 3-5” of camo built up on the bed to make it look taller.

Perhaps it has that ugly split light look?  Or a stacked light similar to F-150 or Super Duty.

Agree regarding the wheels.  Kia's wheels are HORRIBLE these days, and these four spoke ones are along those same lines......gross.

Maverick and Ranchero both ended production in the late 70's (1977 and 1979 respectively) but Ranchero was in production much longer (started in 1957). I'm voting for Ranchero unless Skunk Truck is an option.

Sorry persons, I can't get excited about this vehicle. I can see where it will likely meet expectations, though. I think the Maverick's success is partly due to people are tired of the SUV silhouette.

I think the Skyliner name will be used on a Bronco sunroof similar to the Jeep SkyTouch thing or whatever it's called.

Autotopian did some crude calculations, they believe the truck is 192-195 inches long and 62-65 inches tall.

Borg brought up a good point.....we saw the front end's true shape (mainly the slope) in the teaser earlier this year:

 

 

....you can see the front camera bump there in the center that we see on the vehicle below.

 

 

 

He's also saying the bump on the roof on the teaser image is LiDAR coming alongside the new Escape 2 years after launch.

The good thing is it doesn't look insanely droopy. it still has squared off, blocky truck elements to it. The side profile on the mule looks a little ute life and soft, so I wonder how well it'll mesh with the design under the tarp where you can see some hints of boxier elements like the character lines around the "grille" that essentially just form a big rectangle.

Honestly, the truck being 60 inches and that low to the ground is awesome to me. It almost feels like the return of the Ute. Low, RWD, performance oriented, with styling that at least from the side profile, looks very ute/car like to me. This helps differentiate it from the maverick more imo.

The Ute-like appearance you describe is what bothers me. This mule almost looks like an old Taurus. Of course a lot of that is due to the camo, which they did a great job on. But one thing the camo can’t hide is the rake of the windshield. It’s too extreme and car like in my opinion. Part of what made the maverick a success and the Santa Cruz a failure is that one looked like a truck and the other did not.

 

Short hoods generally don’t look good on trucks. I think the gm EV trucks suffer from this a bit. This Toyota is often used as an example of a decent looking short hood. However, it still has a more truck like rake to the windshield. I’m not sure how the short hood and carlike windshield combo will look.
