$30,000 EV Truck Spy Shots (Autopian found it)

Recommended Posts

I like Ranchero because it provides a more distinct identity from the Maverick. Maverick EV could be fine to solidify the importance and durability of that nameplate. It would also clearly convey the intended market for the truck. Either way I think I’m definitely getting this thing.

...Maverick EV just falls under my personal hate for having two completely un-related (design) products with the same name.  Yes, I know there's Mustang Mach-E, but at least it has a sub name that's not just "EV".

I know Ranchero has history, and understand they're going for the whole "sedan-ish product with a bed" view, but Ranchero just sounds old and outdated to me.

I don't advocate using it since it was on a sedan, but had Ford not used it before, Fusion would actually be a neat name for it (i.e. Fusion of technology, car/truck sort of fusion, etc.)

Well, if Ford didn't try to sue Pep Boys for the naming rights of Futura, we would be in the clear for Fusion... Although, Futura is kinda cool if Ford could re-use that without pissing off a judge....or, maybe F-One Hundred. Spelled out kinda like Five Hundred over 500....but, in reality, I still think Fusion sounds good for this new truck....

Part of what made the maverick a success and the Santa Cruz a failure is that one looked like a truck and the other did not.

The Santa Cruz had other issues with it that prevented it from being successful and the EV needs to be more aerodynamic, which includes a more sloped back windshield to cut down on the frontal area.

Plus I have this feeling Ford is going to be marketing this as lifestyle truck that is more about moving people then hauling things like the Maverick. I'd venture to guess that the Maverick will be more capable of hauling/towing and the CE1 will be barely a step above what a passenger vehicle can do. That also makes it different from the Ranger and Maverick.

Not to mention the camo on the window sills makes it look goofy since the side windows will most likely extend down to around where those fake door handles are.

I have to say this much, from the limited shots of shown of before, I wasn't expecting it to be as "boxy" as it looks in these photos.

The good thing is it doesn't look insanely droopy. it still has squared off, blocky truck elements to it. The side profile on the mule looks a little ute life and soft, so I wonder how well it'll mesh with the design under the tarp where you can see some hints of boxier elements like the character lines around the "grille" that essentially just form a big rectangle.

Reminds me of that Aero F-150....

The Ute-like appearance you describe is what bothers me. This mule almost looks like an old Taurus. Of course a lot of that is due to the camo, which they did a great job on. But one thing the camo can’t hide is the rake of the windshield. It’s too extreme and car like in my opinion. Part of what made the maverick a success and the Santa Cruz a failure is that one looked like a truck and the other did not.

Short hoods generally don’t look good on trucks. I think the gm EV trucks suffer from this a bit. This Toyota is often used as an example of a decent looking short hood. However, it still has a more truck like rake to the windshield. I’m not sure how the short hood and carlike windshield combo will look.toyota-1-6539356291f09.jpg?crop=0.894xw:

As a maverick hybrid owner, the looks of the two trucks didn't have a huge impact on my purchase. It was more about the hybrid, how proven and durable the 2.5 hybrid is vs. the turbocharged dct SC that seemed like it was gonna have all sorts of issues, and they have.

It was about the price as well, and the lack of credibility Hyundai has in passenger trucks. So basically reliability, fuel efficiency, credibility, and price. Those seem to be the main draws of the maverick.

I agree it looks a little funky, but it could look cool with a camo off in a sporty, muscular ute sort of way. The issue with upright windshields and designs is they won't be aero enough. It's one of the reasons why I believe Ford should push this platform as a car, hatchback, crossover platform instead of a rugged SUV or truck platform. The sleek looks of a car are already perfect for aero, so you don't really have to mess with them and do anything weird visually to get solid range.

The only think I'm disappointed by, and maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised when we see the full design, is that if they were gonna go for more of a car based ute look, that they didn't pull styling from the mustang.

I don't mean make the hood super long or something, but I mean like having a front fascia that looked a little bit like an EV muscle car. Having a hood design where the bulges evoke mustang vibes, flaring the fenders a bit and giving it a muscular stance. Little touches here and there to set it off.

Instead, it looks a bit Subaru baja from the side. Like a sedan/wagon based ute instead of a coupe based ute like the original ranchero. I feel like that may have been a mistake. But again, maybe they'll surprise me.

When you scan the QR code on the mule wrap, it sends you to a site with multiple vids and pics. I have a doctor's appointment so I won't be able to check out the vids just yet, but here's an image of winter testing. Like the looks more here.

It is essentially that. This is basically a Maverick EV because frankly Ford needs to make sure their home (Trucks) is in order before they go chase back other segments. The Maverick also showed these compact trucks are a way to win back sedan/crossover customers with something they’re better at. I think it will work.

I really like it personally. I think the camo might be throwing you off. They did it well.

The low headlights will take some getting used to. On most trucks, the top of the headlights seem to be in line with the bottom of the windows, but in these new shots, it looks like 6-10” lower.

If you are looking/hoping for that sporty Mustang vibe, then I think you may be disappointed. Ford appears to be pursuing the more conventional (Maverick like) truck styling with aerodynamic tweaking.

I did have a thought, maybe the front end is kinda like the old Ram?

where the front fenders are lower then hood?

Definitely some ram similarities with the fenders and hood, as well as the creases

Man I hope so. It could be a mach-e situation where the mach-e looks frumpy in some vids and pics, but you see it in person and it looks great. I really want to like this thing, and hope they nail the styling and other aspects of it. I just have some concerns with what's been presented thus far.

Yeah its gonna look like a truck they were pretty clear about that.IMG_4961.thumb.png.3ab4961eb5e9d89ded7b89a744486977.png

remember that this is the shape. If you were expecting something like a Falcon Ute and not a Maverick-ish EV, well if Ford thought the former would sell well I’d be surprised.

I think that is probably because the hood is more curved, so the line is lower

I tried to overlay the Maverick on that side profile image and it didn't work out right....I'll post it anyway, but it doesn't make sense.

What I was able to do was try some more measuring...

Forgive the multiple lines, as I was trying to figure out some perspective, but that wasn't that helpful.

I took the rim size, which we know is 20", and then stacked it three times from the ground.....directly stacking 3 of them gives you 60" (in theory), and the green line shows where this would be.....so looks like it'll be around 58 ish inches tall.

here's the failed overlay of Maverick...but it doesn't make sense because there's no way the Maverick is that much bigger, hence my attempt at looking at proportion lines, but they didn't skew enough to help.....if anyone has suggestions, I'm game for trying things.

See this looks fine to me and I feel like I'm going crazy lol. I think it's because when it's under a sheet, you can make out some of the creases and shapes better than either are covered on the mule, or washed out by the camo pattern. Like that looks pretty blocky, whereas the images of the truck in the snow look incredibly bulbous lol.

That would be an interesting name for it - Ford Falcon. Resurrects a name from Fords storied past. Hasn't been used in North America for decades, would also fit in nicely in Australian market....
