Midsize Ford EV Pickup Targeted Range Revealed

When asked about the company's stance on the pickups range, Ford supplied an interesting answer. "Our strategy is to meet the expectation of some customers of around 300 miles of range. Instead of using larger, more expensive batteries to achieve this, we are focusing on extreme vehicle efficiency through aerodynamics, weight reduction, and energy management to achieve a similar range with a smaller, lower-cost battery." Mentioning that "some" customers are expecting about 300 miles of range certainly suggests that the midsize Ford EV pickup may not feature a total range figure near 300 for the standard range model. Instead, it seems like the company will also offer an optional nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery, confirming previous reports.

A post over on mavericktruckclub seems to corroborate this. Take this with a grain of salt, but the poster mentioned he was in a focus group for this vehicle. He said the base version would be 30k with RWD and 200 mile range. The AWD version with extended range would be 35-38k. He mentioned thinking it looked like a Kia/hyundai at first. He also mentioned the mid gate, very modern looking interior with the large screen, and the ability to power your house like the lightning could. Also a power tailgate.

I asked him some other questions under my OneAlienBoi profile on the maverick forums. Apparently it's gonna have some accessories, but he said they were silly and would appeal to people under 35 mostly.

I wish he could have remembered what they were. Hard to think of an accessory that would be considered silly.

Well, that nails the "silly accessories" target. 😄

I think about some of the "lifestyle accessories" Ford has put out for the Bronco, Bronco Sport, and to a much lesser degree the Maverick. We actually asked a Performance/Accessories rep about it once. He said "yeah, those look really cool decked out at car shows but that's about it".

Worth noting that this post from FA just rehashes the Q&A from February, so its not new.

Only 200mi for the base version?

edit: I found his post. He said “RWD with a range of at least 200 miles” referring to the base option. Do we have confirmation of the battery size?

Just spit balling here,

assume that base is RWD like Mach E but maybe 75% of the weight

and therefore 75% of Mach E’s std range battery (72 Kwhr) so 54 kwhr?

Ultimately, I’m estimating roughly 230/240 miles for base RWD version.

Universal EV Platform Engineered With Right-Hand Drive In Mind

Thus, it isn't terribly surprising to learn that the Ford Universal EV platform was designed with right-hand drive markets in mind, too.

The Blue Oval revealed this little tidbit during a recent question and answer session pertaining to its UEV platform and the first vehicle that will utilize it - a mid-size pickup due to arrive in 2027. "The platform is capable of right-hand drive, but we have no specifics to share currently," the automaker stated, adding, "the UEV is a globally capable platform, and Ford plans to export vehicles. However, we aren't sharing specifics on where and when yet."

This is unrealistic extrapolation on my part but a base Mach-E (260 mile range RWD) starts at $38,290. If ford can cut 25% of the batter capacity to save weight and costs, hopefully this program can also cut ~25% in other build and development costs. That would put it in the sub $30k range. With Ford maybe turning a real profit on it.

Correct, that would be the expectation for doing all of this.

They need to because about $5 billion is being spent on UEV and Louisville.

but are folks who would consider driving a Ford vehicle really interested in electric vehicles??

Yea, they sure are as long as the electric vehicles are the vehicle types that Ford has a reputation for doing really well, which would be one or more of the following:

  • Pickup truck
  • Body on frame
  • Commercial vehicle
  • Iconic design

The other attribute that will get those folks really interested in electric vehicles is affordability, or at least pricing parity with vehicles using other powertrain types.

Ford CE1 products announced thus far meet all of that.

To a point.  Lower pricing will increase sales but only to 20%-25% not 50%.

Yea, your estimates align almost perfectly with surveys over the past 6 or 7 years that found between 21% and 27% of new car buyers in the U.S. really want an electric vehicle. Of course, actual EV share of total new vehicle sales is lower than that, mainly due to affordability concerns. CE1's emphasis on affordability may be able to push the share closer to 30% toward the end of the decade once Ford starts sellin' those products in high volume. 50% market share for EV in the U.S. new car market will take longer, that probably ain't happenin' until the 2030s.

That Bezos-backed Slate EV pickup is only $24,000! Of course it has no radio and manual windows! Bezos could throw billions into it if he wanted. He could break Ford. Sad, huh?

It's sad you think a 2 door truck with wind up windows could break a brand like Ford lol.

I wouldn't have thought it 10 or 20 years ago. But now? And they could add options gradually. If I had told you 10 years ago a fire pumper or aerial ladder in 2026 would each cost $1.5 million and would take 3 to 5 years to be delivered, you would have told me I was nuts! Or that apartment housing developers/landlords would be increasing their tenant's rent by 78% overnight and municipalities would be increasing property taxes by 50% over the previous year or that states would start considering banning cars older than 2009 or that car mfrs. would try to ban owners from fixing their own cars. Yeah, what would you have said?

We already knew most of this. But Farley making the claim that the engineering is gonna blow people's minds, and that it's cooler engineering than a hypercar sounds promising.

Let’s hope it is true and that this mind blowing engineering also quickly makes its way into the Ford ICE and hybrid products.

1. He wants to make money. That means you do not invest in one fund that heavily.

2. He doesn't have billions in liquidity just sitting around doing nothing.

Just like Musk, most of their wealth is tied to stocks. They would have to give up stock in other items to invest that heavily in another company.

Ford claims the aerodynamics on the new truck is 15% better than other trucks

and control systems that are more efficient than those of Chinese manufacturers.

All of that adds up to 50 miles extra range…..

The other exciting part is,

Ford will use gigacasting, or “unicastings,” to reduce the number of parts from 146 to build the current Maverick to just two for its upcoming pickup.

Whatever Ford ends up doing at LAP & TTP, I just hope they

hit it out of the park and blitz Tacoma  off the showroom

We can all hope, but I remember back in 2018-19 when the Ranger was coming back to NA after a 8-year hiatus, and people were talking like it was going to be the end for Tacoma.  When just the opposite happened, Taco sales just kept increasing.
