it's behind a paywall

It let me through for some reason, its no new information. The only thing that isn’t just repeating from existing Ford press releases is that the QR Code website depicting an arid environment with cacti on the roadside might hint at Ranchero.

More impressive if it wasn't behind a damn paywall.

I was told that the first XXXX views are free, but once the magic number has been reached, the paywall clicks on.  Nothing really new in the article that hasn't already been discussed, but being on the front page of the Detroit News is great free marketing.

I did some comparisons with this photo to Korean EVs in GIMP. I originally checked the Kia EV4 and EV6 since the C&D tour article mentioned, but the Kia slope is just way too steep. But I also checked it against the Hyundai Ioniq 5:

Angle of view issues aside, focusing on the edge of the curve I feel this is a decent match for slope and shape of hood.

Do you think this is a decent comparison for hood shape? The leading edge of the Skunk truck hood is obv different but I was trying to grasp the shape.

Yeah, kinda sorta, I understand the style you’re trying to convey there.

The aero requires the front and windscreen to have slope but if interested buyers can get past that, I think Ford will have a nice little hit on its hands. It’s  a style and proportion that has grown on me over the past year or so, my journey has gone from worried to quietly confident but who knows….

Its really interesting and seems like nobody has actually done it before. The Santa Cruz and other car-ish compact pickups have much more rounded faces with taller leading edges and flatter hoods. Other EVs have done this hood (Ioniq 5, Toyota C-HR+/Subaru Uncharted, believe it or not the Dodge Charger EV under that arch) but aren’t pickups. Farley wasn’t BS’ing when he said it’s a new body style.

We shall see.....

I'm wondering what kind of buyer this will end up appealing to.  Not the buyer they're targeting (anyone and everyone, I'd assume), but actual buyers.  Does it appeal to just an EV buyer such as a Model 3 or Model Y buyer, does it wind up pulling ICE sales?  Does it pull Maverick sales?   A little of all?  It'll be interesting to see.....

I'm waiting for the numbskulls who rush into a dealer to buy one, then a week later discover that it's NOT a Hybrid, and they have to figure out how to charge it,,,,,,

Especially the ones who live in apartments with no charging facilities.

Shame on any dealer/sales team that sells the UEV and isn't up front about what it is and what it isn't. They'll have earned the junk survey they draw from that forever.

I've been at my current store for a year now, and have had zero EV buyers but tons of conversations about them. Zero hybrid buyers but tons of conversations about those, too. And as far as plug-in hybrids, there's less interest in those than either pure EV's or normal hybrids. My market is kinda weird though. One of the hypotheticals that's drawn more interest than anything else I've done lately was this AI-helped regular cab, short box, 4x4, 5.0 V8 F-150 XL I set up based on an Oxford White Build & Price.May be an image of car and text

Perhaps on cue, this article comes out:

Blue Oval Outlines Its Intended Midsize Ford EV Pickup Customers

It notes that the EV pickup is aimed at "value-conscious buyers, tech-savvy younger drivers prioritizing digital features, and the mass market demanding a reliable, tech-forward daily driver."

It does blow my mind how little thought and research many consumers put into buying a vehicle. Like I get they aren't as passionate about cars as us, but just researching basic things is so easy and hardly takes any time.

For the second most expensive purchase most people will make, if they can't even put the bare minimum of thought into it, they deserve a shit box.

I get a little giggle out of it every time an auto manufacturer talks about attracting the young "active lifestyle" demographic, only to discover that there's a lot of young "active lifestyle" people who aren't buying cars, either because they don't want a car, or they can't afford a car because they don't have a job. 😄

I don't consider myself "blessed" very often, but I'm blessed to have a customer base that has either done all their research (sometimes too much!), or they trust our dealership to build them a vehicle they'll love. Once in a while I'll get someone who wants something... dumb. It's hard to put a word on it without sounding nasty, but there are some ways to build a Ford that make zero sense. Sometimes we can educate them and build something that makes sense. At my old store we'd get some that would dig in and insist on their build... and we'd have to ask for a large deposit on that order and a binding contract to buy. Hate to get stuck with something goofy because the weirdo that ordered it backed out.

Even look at what happened with Scion and the Element like 20+ years ago-was bought by older folks who had fun money and could blow it on a car like that. Even then when the "economy" was better, the average car buyer doesn't buy something like that.

Given the demographic shift over the years, "young" buyers are going to be 30-40 somethings. Lots of changes afoot with society because of that.

30-40 somethings are relatively young. And then in 3-4 years when the car is being sold used 20-30 somethings would then go on to buy it, and so on

Got this from Google, so take it with a grain of salt:

  • Ages 55 and over: Make up 52% of all vehicle buyers (while representing only 38% of the adult population). This group has the highest concentration of wealth, enabling them to purchase premium and new vehicles.
  • Ages 35–54: Account for approximately 34% of buyers.
  • Ages 34 and under: Make up only 14% of vehicle buyers (despite representing 30% of the adult population). Young drivers also represent about 8% to 10% of new vehicle registrations

Yes, I was saying truly young people in my age bracket would be probably buying this used After the people in the 34 to 52 bracket have their turn. The only way to actually get a ton of people in my age bracket buying new would be to offer B-segment shit like the Renault 4 E-tech for $20,000 USD. At that price you could lure in anyone with good enough credit who likes a tech forward car (since otherwise at that price point might as well just get a nicer car used). This probably won’t actually happen unless Nissan finds a way to bring over the Micra, Chevy keeps making another Bolt, or if Ford makes a new Focus on UEV. I would not bet on any of those three things.

New Renders that seem to be closer to what it actually looks like. I still think the window sills are lower on the door and it won’t have that stupid light fang designIMG_2529.webp.9d8007e95d0b5f960d484b2625ed7161.webp

They're hellbent on that heavy crease over the front wheel arch with none on the bed/rear arch for some reason...

Yep just lazy photoshop on that...they can't have the crease on that because of the door cutout. IMO the upper crease wheel arch doesn't need to exist on it.

I’m pretty sure this is the same as the red one from the other week, just slightly different angles and color. All the other details appear to be the same.

All these renders apparently have the incorrect door handles as Borg has said they will be similiar to Mach E.

My wife calls the Mach E the Pinto because it reminds her of her Grandmas Pinto lol

That would've been a better name than the awkward Mach-e, IMO. The corporate attitude of denial and ambivalence that went with the Pinto is far enough in the past for most of the market. Most folks don't remember Cadillac Cimarron, either.

I think they are assuming that the blue sketch from earlier this year was revealing important info. That’s probably where the wheel arches come from too.

They are inching closer on the front hood shape and I like it. I actually wouldn’t mind the light fangs, it would be a little distinctive without risking too much. If they don’t work, they can just be removed in a facelift. Edit: I will say, though my impression of the headlights through the camo is that they are probably more similar to the Maverick headlights with an LED strip, added either on the top or in the middle. I can’t remember if it was ED or JPD or borg, but we’ve known there is no light bar.

The last thing Ford should do is name any electric vehicle after the pinto. It would just take one singular battery catching fire and everything would be cooked.
