The corporate attitude of denial and ambivalence that went with the Pinto is far enough in the past for most of the market. Most folks don't remember Cadillac Cimarron, either. Car culture people and Pepperidge Farms remember. 😄 55 minutes ago, Zestyg said: The last thing Ford should do is name any electric vehicle after the pinto. The press fallout would be more toxic than the burning battery fumes. Image if the Pinto history had happened in today's age of social media. Yikes. rmc523
Bill Ford Confirms Midsize EV Pickup's Launch Timeframe Now, Blue Oval Executive Chair Bill Ford has confirmed that timeline, via a recent interview with Axios co-founder Mike Allen. "So, we are developing, we have a 'Skunkworks,' but it's kind of out of the closet now, in California to take on the Chinese in the EV area, to sell profitably an EV under $30,000, and we're going to launch that next year. And it'll have several what we call 'top hats' on it," Ford said.

BenKohnen
Assuming "top hats" is a reference to body types, just being slippery with wording. Truck, vans, SUV's, sedans. Common "skateboard" base chassis, common engine/battery packs, plug-and-play bodies for different needs. Maybe. Also, if Bill Ford said "under $30k", that's something interesting. Specific words are important. When Jim Farley says things, I hate to say I find myself applying a little bit of filter to it, because sometimes he'll say things he's probably not supposed to say out loud. 😄
Zestyg
Bill Ford also said “we’re starting with an SUV” so it could all just be a mistake (or alternatively he looks at the skunk truck as a SUV, which would certainly make the “mid-sized” designation make sense)

That’s like $34k out the door all included without a trade in or state EV rebate. For me it would mean I could probably do it net under $32k. That's a pretty large discrepancy. My guess is the truck and suv will be just under 30, like $29,995 sort of deal, and the sedan will be mid to high 20s. He mentioning having different top hats right before, which internally likely made him think about the suv they're developing, and it was a simple slip up. That's just my guess. A true sedan could be a risk. A hatch or Chevy Bolt EUV body type is probably a better bet for that low end model. A retro inspired Ford Escort revival could work. It would be like what Renault is doing with the Renault 5 E-tech, which, although I don’t like NMC seems to be quite a brilliant vehicle that sells six figures and looks utterly fantastic. also, just to be clear, my concrete suggestion here would be a Ford Escort hatch with the Chevy Bolt body type. I've been saying for some time an EV hatch that ties into the escort whale tail from the 90s but done in the design style of like a n74 concept but obviously toned down would make for a really awesome EV hatchback. Especially now that Fords using rally racing as a major inspiration for their overseas car lineup in Europe. It would be something unique that stood out from the crowd. Trader 10
Regardless of how many variants Ford is working on, they won’t see the light of day unless the truck is a sales success.

Funny you mention that. I'd heard a story from a Ford trainer who came through my (now former) store when the Mustang Mach-E came out. He said that car started out to be an electric Focus rather than a Mustang. When they'd put together functioning prototypes and took them out on the test track, they realized they had way too much performance to call it a Focus. So, back to the drawing boards, restyled the body and "personality", and flipped it into a Mustang. I'm with you, a Focus hatch would be a winner at the right price point. Make it a true entry vehicle and it'd do well.

Yes it was originally more of like a Subaru Crosstrek design, but the design is why they changed course, not the performance. Basically everyone knew it was ugly, and wouldn't sell. So Farley was the one who said pivot to make it a mustang. They restyled it and made it sexy, and then developed some performance models. Before it became the mach-e, it believe the plan was for it to be FWD, and it wasn't sporty at all, things like the gt trim didn't exist until after the rebrand. It's also why unfortunately the mach-e platform has some performance limitations like reducing power after 5 seconds of full throttle. Because the platform wasn't designed to be used as a performance car initially, so it was compromising.

You can see something, and don't worry, I won't share the screenshots again lol, but in the background of the Ford EV first impressions vid that looks like a hatch in terms of height. We can't see much, but you can see the shape of the front fender and how aggressively it angles down near the leading edge. It gives me modern vibes of this front end. Plus people who toured the skunkworks facility said there was a rally racing escort in the design studio for inspiration along with a shape under a tarp that looked like a hot hatch in terms of height and general shape. Who knows. It could be just a classic case of Deluxe overanalyzing and having wishful thinking, but it's fun to think about. I don't see the point of doing another generic hatchback or sedan. But something fun that can be profitable to make and aligns with Ford's passion product ethos would be neat.
