A true subcompact CUV would be in the sub 180 range like the Bronco Sport. As far as I know the UEV would need another 2 inches or so of width to make it a true midsized vehicle, like how the Edge was about 2 inches wider in width vs the Escape or other C based products. Adding length (for the most part) doesn't make a midsized product. I was looking at the C2 Chinese lineup and with width varies from 73.2 inches on the Lincoln Z to 77 on the Edge and 76.9 on the Nautilus, so I guess Ford can make platforms wider if they need to, but I'd expect the Fathom to birth a true C Long and maybe a C short CUV down the road, vs moving up to a midsized product. I still feel like they're using the interior dimension classification like how the Accord became a "full size" due to interior volume......meaning exterior wise, Fathom size is probably similar to Maverick, but with a more spacious interior? Good question, but that measurement is pretty much obsolete these days due the Footprint rule when it comes to CAFE.

Given how little money Ford wants to give Lincoln in the first place it would certainly save them to have never planned any products in the first place.

That's fair too......my criticism with him has long been that he's always like "my info is right, don't question it ever" approach to any discussion of it. If he were more open to discussion about it, I'd be less critical. And I get - especially with Ford - that plans change often, so it could just be info being outdated, but any discussion point not aligning is met with thorns.

I'd say he's 85% right but if you dare question him on the other 15% or point out his mistakes then he gets his panties in a wad. He just enjoys being the guy who knows more than you do. jpd80
The truth with the UEP Utility delay is to give the Fathom every chance. Just like the Maverick, they want the Fathom to have “clean air” before releasing a utility that may just conquest existing customers. For all the virtues of UEV, Ford is not 100% convinced that Fathom will be a home run. That’s why Ford is looking at EREV for so much product. Given how the market in the US is for EVs, I'd have my doubts also if I was Ford. I'm pretty sure the Fathom will be a good/great product, but I'm also not sure if buying public will actually turn out for it. I hope Ford can still offer a discount or whatnot on home chargers, which should help. And at this point, who cares when the Utility version comes out, I wasn't expecting it till late 2028 at the earliest anyways.

While I know Ford is aiming for a "zig while others zag" approach by offering a trucklet, I'd argue that the utility would be more appealing to a broader swath of customers. That said, Maverick did really well, and perhaps better than expected, so I think they're hoping to recreate that lightning in a bottle. I do think we'll see some overlap of Maverick customers, given the similar form factor. Another thing to consider, Maverick came out when Ford already had a full crossover lineup at the time too, so there wasn't space for an additional utility unless you went subcompact, whereas Ford currently has a massive void below Explorer where the "Mythic" crossover could fill in sales wise.....I'd almost argue they more likely to conquest existing customers with the Fathom instead of a crossover offering, at least with how their lineup is currently situated.....but that's a problem of their own doing/poor planning. Zestyg
3 hours ago, rmc523 said: Sure....I'm just saying we'll have to be prepared for Fathom to siphon some Maverick sales. There are a couple of points that make its positioning reconcile to me: 1. the Maverick itself is AFAIK unusually good at conquest sales from shit like Honda and Toyota. 2. Outside of the control of Ford, until the EV market starts growing like in Europe a successful EV will probably mean peeling off Tesla owners. There isn’t that much movement between non-EV and EV owners, at least for the time being. 3. the Fathom for all intents and purposes seems to be a more tech-forward Maverick EV (I mean this in a good way). With these combined, while it is obviously likely the Fathom will siphon some Maverick sales, it shouldn’t be a big problem until there is larger mass movement from non-EV to EV like we are seeing in Europe. Before then, we could probably expect the Fathom to be intended to get conquest sales from Tesla owners, as well as first-time new car buyers. People in their 30’s and 40’s realistically, which explains the large pet, family and lifestyle focus. Once there is larger movement towards EVs from existing ICE Maverick owners, well at that point it helps ensure Ford keeps a customer group it loves having. It would make the Fathom a bedrock of its lineup. There is of course a lot that could go wrong, but if Ford knows how to do anything its make trucks.
jpd80
To me Fathom seems kinda like a Tesla competitor without the direct approach. It may be quirky enough to get that wow from BEV buyers wanting something different Lets hope so guys, feels like Ford is making a diamond- extreme pressure Edited October 7 by jpd80

Remember what the head honcho said? Jim Farley called the development of Ford’s future EV architecture one of the most demanding challenges of his career, comparing it to monumental efforts like NASA’s Apollo and Gemini missions. He said the project represents a uniquely high‑risk, high‑reward initiative aimed at closing the gap with global competitors, especially Chinese manufacturers that have gained ground in EV technology and cost. Ford's (and Lincoln's, to a lesser extent) product cadence over the next 5 years depends on the success of UEV. As for EREV, it's an answer to a question no one asked. Basically askin' customers to carry around stuff they don't want or need.

I wouldn't mind getting an EV, but at the same time I don't want an Ikea style car that is simplified and has no soul to it (which I also get since EVs are fighting for every electron they can get for range, thus why they can be this way) I wouldn't mind a Mach E, but by the time in the market for another car, I don't expect it to be in production and it will need some major updating since it will be on the market for 8 years at that point. We also can't really use this year as a indication of EV sales either-lots of sales where pulled ahead with the elimination of EV credits from the federal government and state governments. I'm curious as to how well the Fathom and Slate do next year, I still think there is a lot of resistance from buyers with EVs and both may not resonate with buyers. If gas prices go back down to 3 bucks or less a gallon, there will be even less appeal from people who might be on the fence about it. Personally I'd be shocked if Ford can sell 100K Fathoms in 12 months. I think they might be able to hit 50K, given the current market conditions.

The other thing is the marketplace in general; do we want another small truck regardless of propulsion, or is sedan desire near the tipping point? If the Fathom has few takers, How fast can Ford bring out a sedan/coupe on the same innards? Call it the "League," another 19th century nautical measurement. No reason to choose a sedan over a hatchback or utility other than price in this type of vehicle. A high performance sedan is a different story but that's a different class.
