Texasota
My guess is they are having difficulty making the naturally aspirated 3.6 Pentastar work for this EREV. https://www.autoevolution.com/news/stellantis-unsurprisingly-postpones-the-ram-1500-rev-and-jeep-grand-wagoneer-rev-275197.html
akirby
I'm still not convinced these EREVs are going to work.
Texasota
They work okay in small vehicles where the ICE would be adequate in a conventional ICE version of the same vehicle. But I don’t think what RAM is doing is going to work. I saw rumor talk on a RAM forum that they may be changing to a more capable ICE. I hope Ford doesn’t follow this path for the F-150 Lightning EREV.
rmc523
Not surprised it's delayed. Also goes along with the talk that the EREV Lightning is a couple years behind the next-gen F-150 too. Also, shouldn't this thread be in the competition section?

The RAM EREV is following the same pattern as the RAM BEV with these multiple delays. It will not surprise me if it is ultimately canned like the BEV was. RAM has rediscovered Hemi V8s and they can sell those.

Ford apparently has it working in the Bronco Basecamp-it has a 1.5L I4 EREV in it. I think the bigger issue here is how well it is going to work when it comes to towing, which is going to be the big issue with a truck. The 3.6L works fine as ICE alone, but with it lugging the extra battery weight around, well I'm guessing that is the problem or they can't get the electrical gremlins worked out like they had with their hybrid products. I just don't think buyers will buy it.

rmc523
I think Ford is right for taking its time making sure the EREV approach does what its buyers want rather than rushing something out to have it.

It’s expensive, heavy, and more complex for minimal consumer benefit. The Ram is close to 2,000 pounds heavier than an XLT F-150 super crew. Crazy.

Not enough EV range and it still has an engine to maintain. Heavy/Long distance towers won't buy it - too much compromise. The only use case is someone who wants an EV truck, drives local most of the time and occasionally makes a long and/or heavy tow. Not a lot of those buyers.
Texasota
Right now there is a lot of unrealistic and misleading marketing hype about EREVs, but I think Akirby has it right. They will see some buyers for urban use including contractors. But not much beyond that after reality sets in. I do understand why Ford and other OEMs are trying hard to make electrified full size trucks work. They fear traditional full sized trucks are going to be regulated out of business and these trucks are their profit centers. They are desperate to figure something out. A while back JP (@jpd80) made a comment about maybe Ford should just put a modestly larger battery in the F-150 Powerboost and call it a day. That is probably a better approach - invest in making the Powerboost even better, less costly and more efficient than it already is. It is an amazing truck. Amaze amaze amaze as Rocky would say.
