Ford Builds Q3 Momentum with Retail Share Gains, Strong Truck and Large SUV Performance

Recommended Posts

Thanks RMC, once again a big effort to create those monthly figures

that add so much clarity to the actual sales picture.

Ford had another good month thanks to solid F Series, Explorer and Expedition sales

Nice additions from Bronco and Bronco Sport. Easy to get through the commentary

these days because of all the vehicles Ford no longer builds..

Lincoln chugs along with three vehicles until Ford changes things in four years time…

Maybe..

With how strong the Explorer is right now, it does make me wonder what is the future plan for it. It dominates its segment and is highly desirable, but are they going to re-introduce a hybrid? Give it the skunkworks treatment to bring it into the modern era? I don’t think they should touch the character of it at all it’s really perfect, but continuously improving and enhancing is key.

I did this math too....

Sales would be up if it weren't for 3 factors creating nearly all of their decline:
1) Escape/Corsair being dropped......(97,294 lost sales YTD)
2) F-series aluminum fire production issues (59,072 lost sales YTD)
3) EV sales decline (46,947 lost sales, but EV sales are down for all auto companies here with gov't incentives removed)

Those three factors result in 203,313 lost sales YTD vs an overall company decline of 142,629.

Point #1 is self-inflicted by bad product planning, but #2 and #3 are out of Ford's control.

I mentioned it in another thread, but I may try to look at Mach-E sales over the course of the year to see how it's doing with gas prices.......Lightning and E-Transit aren't worth looking into....

To be fair, Corsair returns in a couple of months back up to 4 models, but your point is still valid of them changing plans often...

I think there was talk about the hybrid returning, but no idea on the timeline.....I wonder if it won't happen until the refresh (rebody?) that's supposedly coming...

Ford Gets Third Place, Narrowly Holds Off Hyundai In Q3 2026 Sales

According to CNBC, Ford narrowly held on to third place in terms of U.S. sales, which declined 6.6 percent during the third quarter to 507,395 units. That was just barely enough to edge out Hyundai/Kia in Q3, as that automaker posted a 5.4 percent increase to 506,200 units. Ford CEO Jim Farley recently revealed that F-Series supplier issues would likely hurt the automaker's Q3 sales, and that seems to be the case here.

Indeed, it’s a strong signal of Ford’s  intent to strip away sales that add little to the bottom line. That and ongoing external issues like Aluminum supplies thst are hurting Ford’s sales.

GM seems to have suffered a similar decline in sales but most likely due to different reasons.

No matter what manufacturers do, things are tough at the moment

We keep hearing that Hyundai is close to passing Ford but that’s not true. Hyundai and Kia are two separate companies. While they share a lot of engineering and Hyundai owns part of Kia, they  are not one and the same. We don’t combine sales from Subaru into Toyota’s totals. Why are we combining Hyundai and Kia?

It's like combining Mazda and Ford back when Ford owned 33% of Mazda.

Yeah why are GM’s sales going down? Its a lot more than just EVs, like everything that sells well except the Traverse, Corvette, and Trailblazer are in the red

GM sales are declining because they don't offer any hybrids.

GM  has its own self imposed impediments, what I was pointing to is no matter which manufacturer you pick,

all of them are all finding the going tough, so not just a Ford thing…..

It's amazing to me how hard GM has avoided traditional hybrids since Ford debuted the escape hybrid 20 years ago.  They had Volt and tried to do mild hybrids a couple of times then straight to EVs.

Then again Ford missed some opportunities with Edge and Bronco Sport.

Hopefully that changes very soon. I think part of the problem was lack of battery cell production.

You'd think that with the discontinuation of Escape, the batteries from the hybrid and PHEV units could be directed to BS hybrid production as a result.

Well I've seen headlines of the Bronco Getting a new powertrain in 2027, that could always mean the Bronco Sport 😛

Yup....they'll add some small vehicle sales back whenever Corsair comes back ("2027" but no exact timeline yet....who knows if that means January 1st or March 15th), and whenever Fathom actually arrives.......until then they'll have to coast with the aging lineup until the slew of new products arrive in '28+

Meh....Ford hasn't had the best most consistent history of hybrid offerings either.....on again off again, leaving obvious models on the table (Edge, BS as you mention).

It makes zero sense to not offer BS as a hybrid especially as it shares production with Maverick....

Absolutely agree....I have to imagine they fix that with the next-gen model.....I think it's too late for the current model.

Agree.........though I push back on the lack of cell production.....Ford has been using that excuse for decades.  Hybrid sales are there - look at Toyota - yet Ford has never bumped up capacity enough and are always reportedly hybrid limited....

I'm skeptical they'd be able to shoehorn it in if it wasn't designed to accommodate a hybrid from the get-go.

I know it's a C2 product, but that doesn't mean they designed the space for the components if they never planned on offering one in BS......and honestly, even if they did have space/planning for it, at this point in the lifecycle, I'd doubt they'd invest in adding it with a new model around the corner.  Now if a next-gen model comes out without a hybrid offering, that's an absolute mistake.

Re: Bronco - there was talk of a hybrid offering before it even launched, but it got canned to hit launch targets (ha!), so it was likely designed with a hybrid in mind......meaning it'd be easier to plug and play if it has the space was already allocated for batteries etc.

The 2027 Bronco Sport order guide is already out and their are no power train changes.

The Samsung batteries in the Escape PHEV have been a huge problem for Ford. Maybe Ford is saying goodbye to Samsung batteries.
