  1. At 23K, my Sport (all options except AWD & navi) has been flawless.

This is a great car. Only thing I'd like is HID headlights.

Mostly the same here. Almost trouble-free at 25,000 miles in just 13 months. I did have a coil pack on the #4 cylinder go bad, but the dealer quickly fixed it under warranty. And it's still tight as a drum - No rattles, squeaks, etc. The only things I'd change are design issues as opposed to any reliability or quality concerns. I'd have preferred a spoiler-delete option. I hate the headrests poking into the back of my head. And true paddle shifters would have been a real treat. I still recommend this car highly. I like it so much I still haven't driven the 1989 5.0 hardly at all since I got the Fusion Sport AWD. Can't wait for a turbo-4 in the next iteration.

  2. I am going to another dealer tomorrow, but the trick is being there and having the engine cold. Over the phone he gave a possible parts expansion story as to why it goes away in the few minutes, and nothing can be done if so.

The first week, I smelled coolantI the car a coolant line running over the engine leaking which made me suspect of the car from the beginning. It's a black Sport that looks real good though. But an embarrassing tick, knock clack or whatever you want to call it.

I have the black also. You're right, it's a looker. What ever happened with that coolant leak? Did they have to tighten or replace something? And just for amusement, check the oil level. I don't know if OHC engines are the same way, but a couple beaters I had back in the college days burned oil or leaked oil, and when the oil got low they would knock, especially when cold. I don't expect that you have an oil leak or are burning any, but you never know.

  3. My first reply to you was neither intended to be, nor should have been taken as condescending. If it was, I would say so. But that is not the way I conduct myself in person or on the Internet. You misunderstood the meaning of my reply to Freddy and to you (which again, was not meant to be condescending). However, you must admit that your reply to me was intentionally condescending.

In addition, I did not "discount your opinion". I merely explained the well known automotive fact that some ticking can be considered normal on cold start-up with a DOHC engine (including the 3.0 and 3.5L engines in our cars).. However, that does not mean that all DOHC engines (including ours) will necessarily tick. You are one of the lucky ones that have an engine with little to no ticking. I also have one with little to no ticking. But a certain amount of ticking can be considered normal. Whether Freddy's is normal or not will be impossible to diagnose over the Internet.

As far as your use of the word "tattle"? Well...adults don't "tattle". They report transgressors to the appropriate authority instead of useless sniping. That is exactly what I did, make a report to the appropriate authority. And that is what everyone should do in the same situation.

I have now repeatedly informed you that my first reply was not meant to be condescending. I am willing to treat this entire situation as water under the bridge and chalk it up to one big misunderstanding, if you can do the same. Hopefully, if you can then we can simply move on.

I apologize if I misread your intent. I disagree that I said anything, or used any tone, that was worthy of reporting, but doing so is your right. I agree that this was a misunderstanding and/or miscommunication. It is water under the bridge, and I look forward to future conversations.

Freddy: My apologies to you if I caused distraction from your request for info & help. I have never experienced this kind of ticking in my 3.5. If you are uncomfortable with it or with the dealer's response, by all means get a second opinion.

  4. I am glad you have one that ticks less. Your good luck still does not change the well known facts about DOHC engines.

However my reply to you was courteous and only meant to be informational. Yours was rude. Some of us are here to help others by providing correct information which can accomplish task is easy to do when reading comprehension skills are up to par. Hope you feel better after your attempt to deflect attention from your lack of those came skills.

The Internet is already full of discourteous individuals who are brave in their anonymity. You have proven yourself to be one of them and have been reported to the Moderators..

Where do I begin with this? I thought your original response to me was very condescending, and I think arrogant. At least that's how it came across. But I didn't report you to anybody. You discounted my OPINION that I didn't think this kind of ticking should be accepted as normal. You clearly disagree and spent several paragraphs saying so. Brave in my anonymity? I don't see your actual name on your post either! If you want to tattle to the moderator police because you think I don't play nice, that's fine. I'll let you know when I start losing sleep over that. I don't think my tone to you was any different than your tone to me.

By the way -- I'm done talking about this.

  5. Hi 89-Pony. :D Unfortunately, you did not read my reply carefully or simply misunderstood what I wrote. I will quote the important parts you overlooked or misunderstood that directly answer your reply:

1 -"Some ticking, especially on cold start-up, can be considered normal with DOHC engines."

2 - "And even in normal cases some DOHC engines will have no noticeable ticking at all (according to who is doing the listening)."

As you can see, I stated "...can be considered normal with DOHC engines." and "...some DOHC engines will have no noticeable ticking at all...". Therefore, when I stated "...can be considered normal", that did not infer that all of them will tick. It means some may tick and still be working just fine while others may not tick at all. And my statement that "..even in normal cases, some DOHC engines will have no noticeable ticking at all..." speaks for itself. Some DOHC engines will have no noticeable ticking at all. So you are lucky and have one that has no noticeable ticking at all. But that does not mean that others don't have some mild ticking on cold start-up.just because yours does not. The two possibilities are not mutually exclusive.

To phrase it in a way that may be more understandable: What is "normal" can vary from engine to engine and some "normal" or perfectly operating DOHC engines may exhibit a tick, while others will not. In other words, even in perfectly working DOHC engines, sounds will vary from engine to engine. So in your case, yours does not exhibit a tick. That does not mean that another perfectly functioning 3.5L will not have some ticking sound. It is not unusual for DOHC engines to sometimes exhibit a tick on clod start-up. You are lucky and yours does not. Again, the two possibilities are not mutually exclusive.

The fact that DOHC engines sometimes exhibit a bit of ticking (more than OHV or SOHC engines) on cold start-up is common automotive knowledge that can be easily verified with a little research. It is not some far out and unverifiable opinion.

However, all of that aside, the main point of my reply was that none of us can diagnose whether Freddy's engine is/is not exhibiting unusual noises over the Internet. We can't diagnose whether his ticking is "normal" or not. So if he still feels his engine may not be functioning properly, he has two main choices. take it back to his Dealer, or to another Dealer for a second opinion.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

    Good luck. :beerchug:

Wow. You have way too much time on your hands. You feel better now that you got all of that off of your chest.? So let me put it this way, just to clear up any confusion: You CAN consider that I've never had that problem on my particular car.

  6. 2010 Fusion Sport with 3100 miles. Whenever it is cold started it has a tick that goes away in about 5 minutes. I brought it to the dealer and they told me that there is nothing wrong and it is normal. It this common on the 3.5?. It does not do it, if you restart a few hours later, but otherwise....

I disagree about it being normal. I have a 2010 Sport AWD with almost 19,000 miles. It sites outside  , including last February in the brutal cold of Western PA. I've never noticed ticking!

  7. Ford's website now has the 2011 info. You can see all the color options now (only 5 available on the sport).

So the Comfort Package (heated seats, ambient lighting, etc) is STILL only available with the 402A package for an additional $2,995. Unbelievable that you have to get a moonroof and navigation just to get these simple options on the Sport, while they come standard on the SEL. Hey Ford: Why can't we get these simple options on the Sport without ponying up another $2,995? And you can't get Bordeuax Red on the Sport. Unbelievable. Still a 9/10 effort. :banghead:

  8. I hope that all the bugs are worked out since this is the same as the 2010. 89-Pony glad to see it wasn't your transmission and that they fixed your problem. I do read where the 402A pkg has the GDO and rain senc wipers added. My lease on a 07 Pacifica is out sept 1st so hope the Sport is in right after that.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Yep, I've put about 130 miles on since the fix and it's running as strong as ever.

  9. The 2011 Sport can be had in White Platinum. 2011 Sport can also be had in Blue Flame, Red Candy, Tuxedo Black, and Ingot Silver. Absolutely horrible color options on the Sport, IMHO. Blue Flame? This is a 30k sedan not a teenager's Focus. How about Kona Blue?

OK, I see the problem. Ford's web site still only has the 2010 build configurator up, not 2011. I'd like to see the Sport in the white. I agree about the color choices. I may have been tempted by the white if it had been available when I ordered my 2010, as it sits out all the time. I got Tuxedo Black. Not as bad to care for as people warned me. As nice as the Tuxedo Black is, the dark color really hides what I think are beautiful lines in the sheetmetal design. Ford needs to spend just a little effort to bring the Fusion Sport into "maturity" -- allow a spoiler-delete option (it looks so 1980's). Have some grownup and modern colors. I like the idea of Kona Blue. That is one of the best colors Ford has released in a while. The silver is so bland -- what ever happened to Silver Birch? And remember the Mineral Grey on the 2005 Mustangs? They also had a burgundy-looking red on the Fusions for a year or two. That is still my favorite. And the Steel Blue on the Escape and Taurus is so gorgeous. Why can't we get that on the Fusion too? Ford really is letting the Fusion line down with the color choices. Lastly, IMHO, they should not offer the red or blue inserts for the interior. That really cheapens the line. Looks comical. With all due respect to those who have it and like it. Matter of taste. I absolutely love my Sport and would get it again in a minute, but it's still a 9/10 effort. Paddle shifters anyone?

  10. Ordered 6 14 Fusion Sport White with charcoal interior and 402A pkg when do think i will get it? Have been on this board lurking long time and have learned about the Fusion Sport fom all of you and decided this was the car for me! Sept??

Sport White? I don't see that on their build configurator. And do you mean a white Sport model, because they don't offer the Sport in white.

  11. Good news all around; it's great to hear about your positive experience with Shults Ford.

The OE tires on the base Focus are Hankook Optimo H725 size 195/60R15; they exhibit low rolling resistance and contribute to the Focus' high fuel economy ratings, but at the expense of other characteristics like handling, noise suppression, etc.

Interesting. Friend of mine has Hankooks on his Civic Si. He hates them. When I ride in his Si, his Hankooks are as loud as the tires on another buddy's 1982 heavy-duty Dodge truck he uses to tow his race car.

  12. From what you described the engine is hitting the rev limiter and is shutting down to protect the engine. This should not be happening if you are in automatic (D)

Nah. Read it again. I was 6,000 rpm max. Redline is way above that. (6750?)

No matter. PROBLEM SOLVED :hyper: The dealer said the tranny was fine. But the # 4 cylinder was dropping at random. They isolated it to a bad coil pack on # 4. They ordered a new one. It took 24 hours to come in, but they replaced it, retested, and sent me on my way. Drove about 50 miles home tonight with absolutely no signs of stumble. Smooth power & shifting again just like when new (a whopping 18,000 miles ago). Bothersome that this even happened, but let's hope it's a fluke and everything is fine again for a long long time. So nice to have my car back. But I will be very alert to this cropping up again. And hats off to Shults Ford in Wexford PA. They treated me like gold again, shuttle rides, Enterprise rental car, returned my car to me with a fresh wash. I highly recommend them to anyone in the Pgh PA area.

[Now let's talk about that rental car... It was a Focus. I never drove one but was curious. It was a base strippo model. Handled really well. Got 30mpg. Engine didn't exhibit any weakness I expected from a 4-cyl, even with the A/C on max the whole time (93 degrees here). But tire noise was unbearable! Forgot to check the make of tires. And back seat too small for any normal sized adult, even with 4 doors.]

  13. Thankfully I have an appt with the dealer this Wed 7/17. It's getting significantly worse. It often struggles to downshift, especially 6-5 or 5-4. Usually sliding it into manumatic and downshifting myself does the trick. But on one instance this Friday night 7/2, even that didn't help. It seemed like it was going to stall, and the engine light came on and flashed for 1/2 mile, then went off again. I immediately went into the Sync menu and submitted a vehicle health report. I don't know what that will tell us, if anything. But it made it home OK after that. This is very troubling, as I drive through 2 very narrow, very dangerous portions of the PA Turnpike everyday. There are tight Jersey barriers on either side with asolutely no berm to pull over, and heavy speeding truck traffic. If it should stall in one of these construction zones, it's gonna get ugly. I may go a different way to work until this is fixed, though that will add 1/2 hour to my AM commute and another 1/2 hour to my PM commute. :censored:

Had another significant episode this AM. (The problem happens every day many times, but I'm only pointing out the significant episodes here.) Pulled out of a nearly-blind stop sign this morning. The road goes downhill so the car quickly went from 1st into 2nd (or even 3rd) as expected. I saw in my mirror another car flew over the rise behind me, so I floored it. It hesitated to downshift, stumbled, then went harshly into 1st. It only revved up to 5,750 or 6,000 RPM, but then the engine light started flashing and it stumbled badly in every gear for about 1/2 mile. Ran another Vehicle Health Report, but this one, like the one last Friday, came up that everything was fine. B.S. How the hell can it be "OK" when the engine light is flashing? Thankfully it's in being looked at now. :banghead:

  14. I have a '10 Fusion Sport AWD bult in early Sept 2009. This exact ptoblem started happening right after the car turned 17,000 miles, about 10 days ago. It first started when climbing backroad hills at 45 mph, and only during the 5-4 downshift. It would stumble a good bit (2-3 seconds) until I gave it more gas and then it would shift hard into 4th. It is getting progressivly worse, and tonight did it on a 30-mph road on the 4-3 downshift. Taking it in to the dealer early next week. Glad I got the 5 yr/100,000 mile extended warranty! So I'm not worried about cost. Very disappointing though. This is the ONLY issue I've had on the car. Was beginning to think it was invincible!

Follow-up: I went to almost exclusively shifting via the manumatic Fri night / into Sat. Then returned to letting it shift itself. As of this morning's commute it's settled down a good bit, almost normal again. I called the dealer and the service manager was very open about the issue and the flash/ load test procedure. The bad side is their "expert" at this is on vacation this week and booked solid next, but we'll take it in the week of the 12th to have checked out. I'm cautiously optimistic it will be OK until then.

  16. There is nothing better than knowing you have a prophylactic covering you when you might be with an ugly partner. Sometimes you have to wait until morning to see if she's ugly or not.

And that is my "deep thought statement of the day" from me.

I don't think this partner is ugly, I just think it's a sloppy drunk. I hope the dealer can fix it quickly and permanently. I'm just looking for an excuse to get a new Mustang GT 5.0! :hyper:

  17. Why would you be glad you got the ext. warranty? Your transmission is still covered by the original factory warranty for another 4 years and 43K miles!

Yeah, I'm aware of the factory warranty, and that it covers this problem today. Understand that I drive 20,000 miles/yr and typically keep a car 7-8 years. So that 60,000 warranty will only cover not even the first half of my expected time with the car. This problem took 3/4 of a year to raise it's head. Hopefully they'll fix it once and that's the end of it. But if not, I'm covered for 5 yrs/100k miles.

  19. Hi:

My lease is ending on my Edge in January and leaning towards a Fusion Sport FWD or Escape/Mariner. Anyone have up to the date information for the loyalty incentive on either of these two vehicles. I have either leased an SUV or crossover for the past ten years and the test ride on the Sport was out of this world and I don't think riding up higher in the former is that much to give up considering the build quality/ride/handling on the Fusion. I live in Northern Ohio. I will be buying on the X plan this time around. Considered the AWD Fusion Sport but after tons of research convinced would be ok w/ front wheel drive and dedicated snows. Any and all comments welcomed especially real world experience with the Fusion w/ dedicated snows.. Thanks in advance.

I have the AWD Sport. I put Bridgestone Blizzaks on all 4 corners. It is absolutely a tank in the snow, which we've had lots of since a week or 2 before Christmas. It's by far the best combination I've ever driven in the snow/ice. Overall it's the best car I've ever owned. THAT BEING SAID: Up until now I've always driven FWD for my personal cars (save for any Mustangs), and I've NEVER had problems in the winter with FWD. The key is the tires. I'm 100% sure from personal experience that you will be in great shape with front-drive and good winter tires on all 4 corners (have to keep the rear in line, after all). I will say I am disappointed in the gas mileage on the AWD Sport -- 24-25 on pure highway, but it drops quickly when I hit the hilly backroads -- it can drop my overall mileage down to 18-19. But I knew that going into it. So, if COST is at all a figure, the AWD will cost you about $1,800 more in vehicle price, and about 3-5 mpg every tank. The gas mileage may or may not matter to you, depending on how many miles you log. I log about 2k miles/month, so I feel it.

I also have a 2005 Escape XLT V6 AWD for a family vehicle. I gotta tell you, I don't even care to drive it since I got the Fusion Sport. Keep in mind it's the prior-generation 3.0 V6, but it sounds like a gagged Tasmanian devil. It rides and handles like an SUV, and has developed various creaks and groans in the suspension. The right headlight wire keeps shorting out. After 60,000 miles I am very disappointed in it. But the Fusion Sport is as tight-handling a car as I've ever driven, it's very quiet, and handles like a dream. I haven't even driven my 5.0 Mustang since I brought the Fusion Sport home. I'll always have an SUV for the family, but I hope to steer the missus towards a Flex next time around.

  20. http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_ne...gine/index.html

Looks like 2013 or 2012 at the earliest. It's a shame too, my lease runs out next March and I was hoping to get a 4 cyl turbo AWD (if such a thing existed)

I agree! I love my 2010 Sport AWD, and I'm already thinking when I'm done paying for it, I'd love to be able to buy a Fusion with an EcoBoost 4cyl with 260-300 hp, AWD and true paddle shifters. That would be the best of both worlds -- Power when you need it, and MPG the rest of the time. I can't get my Sport AWD to average better than 21mpg -- usually 19 overall when I add my weekends of hilly country roads. And I am really easy on my cars... hmmm... maybe I should whip the piss out of it, and see what my MPG is then!

  21. Right now I am the owner of a 2008 Mustang GT Convertible. I live in central NJ. The car is a lease that ends in March. I am getting tired of not being able to drive when we get snow here. Don't get me wrong,I love my Mustang, but as a daily driver, it is not good at all in the winter. I have been thinking about getting a 2010 Fusion Sport, AWD as my next car. I want to get the car with Navigation and the Sony 12 speaker system. Is Sync a separate option when you order the Nav system? And one last question, how are they in snow? Thanks for the info. John

I have a 2010 Fusion Sport AWD. I bought 17" Blizzaks on 17" A7 wheels from the Tire Rack. This weekend I had the pleasure of driving it in 6" of snow, on poorly treated hilly roads in southwestern PA. All I can say is... HOLY MOLY, WHAT A TANK! This car was by far the BEST I have ever driven in the snow. That includes the family 2005 Escape 3.0 V6 AWD, and a couple F-150's over the years. I've never accellerated in the snow like that before, even up hill. And since stopping and turning is more important than accellerating, I am happy to say the car stopped amazingly well and short. I tried on back roads to kick in the ABS, and it rarely had to, between the weight and the Blizzaks. The Blizzaks mounted & balanced on the A7 wheels, with TPS sensors, and shipping, was about $1,200 for all. IT WAS SO WORTH IT! I don't know how the stock 18" Eagle RS-A's would have been in the snow, but looking at the tread pattern, I shudder to think what it would have been like trying to turn and stop. That, and I've heard the RS-A's absolutely suck in the cold. I have 2 kids, and the Fusion Sport AWD has immediately become my winter car of choice for taking the family, even over our Escape. It is truly an "all-weather interceptor". And I have a 1989 Mustang LX 5.0 which, yes, I drove in the snow for several years when it was my only car, so I know of whence I speak. I have not driven the 5.0 at all since taking delivery of the Fusion Sport in September -- New car infatuation? Maybe. Sign of a truly wonderful car? Absolutely! The Fusion Sport AWD is plenty quick enough, unless you are one of those that still wears a baseball cap crooked while trolling for Z-28's to race. I swear it is almost as quick as my 5.0. Almost, not quite, but still plenty quick enough. And it is so much more car! By the way, I have the base Fusion Sport AWD with no nav, and yes it came with Synch.

Get snow tires, keep driving with COMMON SENSE, and have fun!

  22. Done, and done, a long time ago... Didn't make any difference on mine.

Same here. It is swung up to the highest position, then adjusted to my height & line-of-vision. It's just not an effective dimmer. Also, even in it's highest position, it really hangs down low, effectively blocking a sizeable portion of my field of vision.

The good news? This is my only complaint about the car after 5,500 miles. OK, that and the gas mileage -- 21 overall with 2/3 highway driving, and the other 1/3 hilly in-town roads. It's as low as 15-17 on weekends when I am not on the turnpike. OK, and the final bitch, which is that the Sport came with standard leather while bun warmers are part of a $3k package, while they are standard on the SEL. Stupid. But that's REALLY all my complaints. Tight, flawless execution, fun as hell to drive.

  23. I picked up a set of 225/50-17 Blizzak WS-60's mounted on 17x7" Sport A7 wheels from the Tire Rack. Total height (diameter) is identical to stock, so no speedo problems. I had WS-50's on the old Altima, and they were loud and squishy. But these WS-60's on the Fusion, with its vastly quiter ride & better handling, are fantastic. No significant difference in NORMAL driving (keyword is NORMAL driving). Can't wait for some snow!

  24. Is there anyway to adjust the sensitivity of the auto-dimming rearview mirror on my 2010 Fusion Sport? It doesn't dim nearly enough in the dark. And if there is any daylight at all, even if it's twilight outside, it doesn't dim at all. So if I get someone behind me, it doesn't dim at all. Often I just tilt it out of view, which isn't the right answer. The flip mirror in my 89 LX 5.0, in my 2005 Escape, and in the old Altima dimmed the light WAY better than this. In fact, I was out in the Escape tonight and forgot I could flip my mirror. I'd just gotten used to having blinding lights in my mirror.

ps: Almost 5,000 miles since I picked it up on September 22. Other than this mirror issue, which is really just an annoyance, I have absolutely NO problems. It's averaging 21mpg (it's AWD) with a mix of anout 2/3 highway and 1/3 hilly country roads w/lots of stop signs and 35mph limits.
