  1. Thanks, that's what I was doing a poor job of saying.

I must disagree. A year ago I went to the F-150 pickup round-up. For several hours I got to compare trucks and motors. The EB had a few moments of turbo lag but once it kicked in, it was like the Space Shuttle.

The 5.0 responded INSTANTANEOUSLY. Just breathing on the gas pedal result in immediate acceleration.

I could have easily afforded the EB, but on Dec. 14, 2011 I took possession of a 2012 F-150 Platinum with the 6 1/2 ft bed with the 5.0 I LOVE THIS TRUCK. The 5.0 ROCKS!!! I still roll down my windows and floor it when I go under a freeway over pass. Sounds like I'm in a NASCAR race.

Unless you are going to tow really heavy stuff, go for the 5.0

I must admit that I must stay under 70mph to get anyhwere near the EPA MPG claimed. But heck, BO will not pe president soon and gas will go down in price....

  2. Considering fuel economy.gov gives the 5.0 19mpg highway, 18 seems it. My dad is looking to move to a crew can but not sure to go Eco or not. What about the 2013 any word?

Get one NOW before BO decides that you don't really need a truck that is so heavy and uses so much gas. 'Get my drift???

  3. Can anyone share how long it took for your truck to arrive at your dealership after it was produced? I understand it will vary based on delivery method and distance from Dearborn but just wanted to get an estimate based on your experiences. Thanks.

I think that it was 6 weeks from the order of our Platinum.

  4. Dude, the transmission fluid will last you longer than that. If you aren't towing heavy, don't change it until 100k at least. If I remember correctly, it is 150k mile fluid.

And unless it takes > 6 months to put that 5k on the Escape, change it at 5k. Put the extra money in a savings account and put some extra money down on your next new vehicle. Changing at 3k vs. 5k is a waste of money if the car calls for 5k intervals.

    Thanks for your concern.

If you start up your vehicle right after an oil change and drive it for 5kmi, without stopping, through cool, clean air on level roads, towing nothing, you'll probably need to change your oil at 5kmi. I, however, some times take short trips without getting the oil to running temp.I some times stand in traffic jams at a dead stop and idle. I some times get stuck in stop-and go traffic. I some times drive through dusty air. I some ties go uphill.

Some people call this "severe conditions" I call it real life.

Also, there is a "Green Agenda" that tries to make you feel guilty for changing oil at 3kmi.

Based on this, I will change my oil every 3k.mi

I will probably have the trans fluid changed at 30k mi to get rid of all the metal in the fluid that was caused by the gears rubbing against each other and then probably every 60 kmi after that.

Bottom line: oil/trans fluid is cheap compared to replacing a motor or trans.

  5. That is really bad news. I hate it for you, especially with so few miles. Upside is there should be no problem getting it fixed. Your truck is the same as I have been Internet shopping. Not ready to buy yet, depends a lot on what happens personally in the next few months. My wife's Edge's transmission does the "slip or skip" move occasionally. It had it's worse episode last Friday. Next oil change, I will have it checked out .

Best wishes in getting it back on the road.

    I find this interesting. I have a 2012 F-150 Platinum 4x4 6.5 bed with a 5.0

I tried to find the transmission dipstick and could not. I finally went to the last resort. I read the owner's manual. Apparently, only the Ford dealer is supposed to change the transmission fluid.

This is disheartening because I have enough trouble getting them the change the oil in my wife's 09 Limited Escape V6 4x4 every 3k mi instead of 5kmi

I guess I will just have to battle them to change the oil the first 10k mi and every 30kmi after that.

I want to make this wonderful truck last a long time.

Depending upon who is in the White House, a truck like this may not be available in the next few years......

  6. It is probably all ok.

How did it do on the first tank of gas from the dealer?

What part of the country are you in? temps? humidity? dew point? etc

I assume you are basic regular E10 (and not E85)?

    Regular mirrors or Tow mirrors?

Bed covers or toppers? or other mods to the truck?

Also, you may want to compare the 2H and 4Automatic (not 4H) for mpgs?

And of course breakin will help some, and throw in some spells of speed........take it up to 90 a few times and/or lower gears at 40-60 etc.......it likes that.

Thank you for your input.Yes I use E10, I live in California so the weather is mild. I guess I could fold my mirrors back. They don't stick way out, but it might help. One day I drove to and from work when it was windy and with the wind behind me I got better mpg and coming back into the wind I got worse. I already compared 2H to 4A and 2H seemed a little better. Probably, I will just accept what mpg I get after it has 3k mi on it and just enjoy driving it. We have an '09 V6 Escape Limited and and my wife's '89 4cyl Toyota p/u so we do have some relatively good mpg vehicles to use. Bottom line is I guess it is going to be a garage queen and used on special occasions and when we get some trial bikes we will use it to take them to the desert. BTW the "spells of speed" generates beautiful V8 music, especially under freeway overpasses;-)

    Thanks again for your response.

  7. I have about 750 miles on my 2012 5.0 PLATINUM 4X4.

If I really drive smoothly on the freeway with no payload at about 65 mph I am lucky to get 18mpg. I have a 3:55 elocker diff and use 2H on the transmission when I am on the street.

Is this just not broken in or is this just the nature of the beast?

    Any tips or ideas?

    BTW I LOVE this truck!!!!

  8. Very nice congrats! I can't wait to get mine!

You are going to LOVE it. I can barely hear the motor at idle. On the road, when I push down on the long pedal it makes this BEAUTIFUL MUSIC from the 5.0. It is not intrusive, just a mellow V-8 growl. WOT turning left at the end of an off-ramp under a freeway overpass creates an echo chamber effect that makes it hard to believe it has stock exhaust. Really.

I discovered something really cool. When you open the hood, the fuse box is right in front of you as opposed to underneath the dash. The tail gate step is worth every penny and so are the box side steps. I am struggling with the navigation and the Sync but I am a slow learner when it comes to computers. Even though it was winter, I turned on the cooled front seats and just about froze my prostate!

I had the bed sprayed with black Line-X. Sadly, the B@stards over sprayed the hood, the roof and the windows. Since the truck is black I did not notice it right away. I just parked the truck in the garage and did not notice it until a few days passed. I have learned how to use a clay bar.

The self-deploying running board is really handy. It has so many luxury features. When you turn off the ignition, the seat automatically goes all the way back to make exit easier. I programmed the truck's on-board garage door opener to open and close my garage door. It is a little button on my sun visor so I don't have to clip my own opener to the visor. When you start the truck the dash shows the "Built Ford Tough" steel plate hitting the ground and kicking up a cloud of dust. The stereo is awsome. The dash has all kinds of gizmos I am going to have to figure out.

If anyone has questions I will be happy to help.

Bottom Line. I LOVE this truck!!!! To me, it's kind of a Lincoln Continental with 4X4 and a 6 and 1/2 foot long trunk.

  9. Very nice truck, congrats! What gears did you go with?

    Thanks.

    I got the 3:55 Elocker.

I don't plan to haul anything heavier than a few trail bikes and riding gear so this should be about rght. MPG under PERFECT contidions is about 21mpg with cruise control set at 65 mph on level ground. Otherwise I get about 17-18 mpg hwy. It has less than 500mi on the odometer. I hope when it gets broken-in it gets better mpg.

  10. 2012 Platinum 5.0 4X4 6.5ft bed side steps, tailgate step, skid plates Tuxedo Black.

We picked it up last night. Kinda wierd buying a brand new vehicle in the dark. We drove it around and looked at the Christmas lights in our neighborhood. The 5.0 ROCKS!!! and makes beautiful music. It is almost impossible to hear the motor at idle.

The Tuxedo Black is kind of metalflake with several different colors.

    I am calling it DARTH.

    WELL worth the wait!

Thank you Ford employees for building this beautiful, powerful, wonderful machine.

I am computer illertate so it is going to take weeks to figure out how all of the bells and whistles. My saleslady showed me lots of stuff, but I can't remember now what she told me.

It was 49k and change out the door.

  11. This is the same style of review as the Focus. This truck's my baby and I've had her almost a month now.

    Tester specs:

    2011 Ford F-150 Supercrew

    FX4 Ecoboost

    Ebony black exterior

    Black interior

    Every option but navi.

    Exterior Design

    What I like:

Black accented taillights, 6 bar grille, body color accents, 20" graphite coloured wheels. Basically everything

    What I Don't like:

Large, gaping hole in the front bumper for airflow to the intercooler. at least add a grille to it? Offset license plate bracket. Awkward looking.

    Interior Design/Layout/Tech

    What I like:

nice interior layout. Symmetrical, simple design with everything in reach. Piano black accents with silver trim easily make the FX4's interior stand out over wood grain. Sync voice commands are slick. interior space is humungous. LCD display in gauge cluster is simple and easy to use. Build quality is great. console shifter is unique and luxurious. The heated seats burn my ass. What else can be said?

    What I Don't like:

buggy Microsoft Sync software. It freezes occasionally and the fuse needs to be pulled. Sony sound system is a waste of money, at least in the F-150. Half volume is as loud as it will get, after half it doesn't go any louder. Once the volume gets higher, bass completely disappears and instead of bass, you hear the subwoofer "thumping" up and down. balance and clarity is good, amplifier is underpowered. Save $500 and install an aftermarket system or if anyone can figure out a way to beef up the amp, tell me please. Minor thing, hardly worth mentioning. I wish the shifter had a leather shift boot on it. crumbs and dirt can get in the crack of the shifter base and get stuck to it.

    Power and ride/handling

    What I like:

Ride is good....on smaller wheels. I'll get to that in the "What i don't like" section. Handling is swell. Power....here we go. jackpot. the Ecoboost is by far and away the best engine in the F-150. Low end torque is superb, which is very noticeable having driven a 5.0L F-150. Towing is superb, pulls my 4500lb boat no problem. Engine and tires are quiet and there are no annoying rattles. Fuel economy is supposed to be good, however mine is not broken in yet. I average 14L/100km. Not great, but I'll wait a few more thousand km.

What I Don't like: Ride. The $500 you saved on that Sony sound system can contribute to tires worth a s**t. The Pirelli's on the 20" rims are by far and away the crappiest tire I have ever felt on a truck. Great on a Maserati, terrible on a truck. Tread makes the truck vibrate, and makes the back end very bouncy. Buy the 20's though, the 18's on the FX4, in my opinion, are very bland looking.

    Verdict

Great truck, easily best in class. Pirelli tires are a let down. Interior quality and space is superb. The truck is gorgeous. Ecoboost is the best engine you can get in a half-ton. Overall, I'd recommend this truck to anyone any day of the week. Great hauler/work truck/family minivan/RV.

Overall score out of 10: 8/10

I LOVE your license plate.... You've got your F-150 so now you'r DONE DREAMIN'

  12. I'll be thinking of your platinum while I'm in the garage for hours this winter installing those automatic runningboards that Ford is doing for you...

    Those are just too awesome.

All things being equal I would have gone with the 5.0; but I need the max payload & tow. I'm coming out of a 2500HD for the last 10 years so the move to a "half ton" is kinda a big change for me.

This new truck beats my 2500HD in every category except payload.

I just got back from the LA auto show. They had a dark grey(?) Platinum 4x4 there. I crawled under it to look at the skid plates. I also glanced at the runningboards. You are a GENIUS if you can figure out the runningboards. At first I thought that retractable running boards were kind of for wussys. Then it hit me. They actually make the truck tougher because they give the truck a lot more ground clearance AND more convenience on entry. The battery had been removed or something because nothing on the truck worked so I did not get to see the running boards deploy.

    Stay warm if you can.

  13. Here's what I ordered =>

Lariat Screw, 6.5' bed, Ecoboost, 4x4

    max-payload & max-tow, 3.73LS

Lariat plus, Nav, Sunroof, Bucket seats

    White Platinum ext /Adobe interior

That is going to be one beautiful truck. Enjoy!

  14. I'm starting to see them quite regularly on the road and they are cute and very easy to park in urban areas. I would say the biggest drawback right now if lack of dealerships selling them. I can only speak for Metro Detroit, and closest Fiat dealer it me is Golling Fiat in Birmingham, a good 30 miles away with very heavy, congested urban traffic all the way there and back. An impressive showroom and service area, but not exactly convenient for those who live 30 miles away. Fiat is going to have to build more dealerships throughout Metro area, but catch-22 is who is going to invest big money in dealership that has low sales now and new Fiats are still like two years away. Even Lincoln dealers situation is not as worrisome as guys like Golling who invested millions into beautiful Fiat dealership on Woodward Avenue and only one model to sell so far.

I see that the Fiat Abarth is coming out soon. Hopefully that will help.

If I had to choose between the Smart Car and the little Fiat 500 I would definitely get the Fiat. But I am only 5'9"

  15. your a patient man....I ordered nav as well in mine, I was ready in Jul but decided on waiting for the new payload package in the 12 Screw.

The payload PKG is not an issue with me. The most I will probably be carrying is two Yamaha 125 trail bikes. I hope it has a smooth ride....

I'm hoping I can get more that the 19mpg highway rating. I wanted a 12 because the price difference was miniscule b/w the 11 and the 12. We'll see...

    What motor are you getting???
