There has always been a certain amount of cross-shopping between midsize and full-size pickups, so that is nothing to be concerned about. But if you look at sales since Colorado and Canyon were introduced, you see strong demand, strong prices and very low dealer inventories. Customers are reentering the segment from all sorts of GM and non-GM vehicles, just as we predicted.
If you talk to dealers or customers, there is NO sign that this is a flash in the pan. This is one of those times where the analysts and reporters need to get out from behind their computer screens and talk to customers and dealers in the real world.
Posted by: Tom Wilkinson at Chevy | Apr 28, 2015 9:20:45 AMNo doubt there is pent up demand, but keep in mind that the midsize segment ran at 800,000+ units a year for 20 years. That is a lot of customers, and a LOT of pend up demand.
Also, when you talk to customers in traditional midsize truck markets like southern California or the northeast US, it becomes clear that there are a lot of people for whom a midsize pickup is their preferred vehicle, due to narrower roads, denser traffic, smaller parking spaces, etc.
How you feel about midsize trucks depends a lot on where you live and where you drive.

Ford wont bring back the Ranger, they only care about the sales numbers, everyone knows GM owns the sales in relation to individual owners, only the fleet sales help Furd win anything.

"Clearly the all-new 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon have injected some adrenaline into the midsize pickup truck segment and, so far, have provided all the segment players with growing sales, but for how long and at what cost?
According to Automotive News, as many as 16 percent Colorado or Canyon buyers switched from their full-size counterparts (the Silverado or Sierra 1500). Some experts think this potentially means that Colorado and Canyon sales eventually could take a big bite out of GM's half-ton pickup profits as well as flatten sales.
Some analysts believe the next few years will be good for midsize pickups due in large part the two new players and a revitalized Toyota Tacoma coming out by the end of this year, but over the next five years things could be different. Even if the midsize truck segment grows, some are saying it won't get bigger than 500,000 units, meaning less than 3 percent of the entire automotive industry — not even close to the segment's heyday in the late 1980s at around 9 percent."

When Colrodo won MT's TOTY they said Chevy expects it to perform well in future crash testing. Now that the ratings have been out for a few days, there hasn't been a peep from MT or GM on the Colorado rating.

Mr. Williams is correct. Demand continues to be very strong for Colorado
But how would he know by looking at total sales that the Silverado did not lose any sales to the Colorado? Silverado sales may be up because they were terrible last year, down 18.4% in January 2014.

I don't recall when Ford went to 5/60k, but it's always good when a manufacturer stands behind their product. My Ranger was 3/36k.
Drivetrain Warranty:
Ford went to a 5 year / 60,000 miles for the 2007 MY.
GM countered with a 5 year / 100,000 miles for the 2007 MY.
Ford stays firm.
GM goes bankrupt in 2009 and gets a bailout.
GM goes back to a 5 year / 60,000 miles for the 2016 MY.

Ford won against anti-Ford/pro-GM fanbois like this from PUTC that bragged about the longer warranty...
Until ford comes out with a 100k warranty they aren't even an option in my new truck search.

I wonder if Ford will match GM and Ram's warranty with the new pickup, but I doubt it because of the poor reliability record for Ford.

with the earlier comments about aluminum cabs on SD 250-350, and no reference to 450, 550, I guess this confirms the steel cab will continue for use in 450, 550
Not gonna happen and makes no sense specially with Ford trying to lose weight with the current F-450.

Here’s the flaw in Edmunds’ findings. They never took a sledgehammer to a 2014 F-150 to find out what it would cost to repair similar damage to a steel body panel. I’d like to take a look at that repair bill. Ford says the cost of pulling a dent from an aluminum body panel should take no longer than a steel one. Ford spokesman Mike Levine also says that in many cases the new F-150 will actually be easier to repair, because of its innovative modular structure which reduces repair time and helps save costs. Major body damage like the type Edmunds inflicted on the 2015 F-150 is rare – only about 1 percent of repair work, according to Ford. The majority of F-150 collision repairs will be non-structural and can be completed by most body shops today (e.g. bumpers, grilles, mirrors, dings, dents).
In fact, Ford offers up a fun video of its own, showing professional athletes whacking golf balls, baseballs and even a shot put into the reinforced truck bed to demonstrate that the aluminum F-150 is actually about 30 percent more ding- and dent-resistant than the outgoing steel model.

If you recall Ford recalled this for the ambulance '11-'12 Super Duties in 2013. But there was a big brouhaha because Ford said this could occur in non-ambulances, but they were only recalling the ambulances at this time.

Lol, love this part of the Ward's article. Pretty much sums it up.
"The EPA says this engine should get 26 mpg (9 L/100 km) on the highway with 2-wheel drive. Our 4x4 supercab never got close to that, even under a light foot."
Why would Ward's state that a 4x4 drivetrain rated at 18/20/23 mpg is supposed to get the same EPA mileage as the 4x2 version?
They got 19 mpg combined in the EcoBoost 2.7 4x4.
Now check this out. The same tester got 19 mpg combined in the Ram Ecodiesel 4x2.

Plus regular gas in the F-150 is 40 cents a gallon cheaper than the premium gas PUTC put in the Silverado, Sierra and the Ram.
I'll also add that PUTC made no mention of this when they scored for fuel "economy."

Correct.

Awhile ago someone asked about conquest buyers, here is some info on that. Is GM conquesting their own vehicles?
"However, beneath the encouraging numbers for the Colorado and Canyon are some less positive trends, said IHS Automotive analyst Tom Libby. Nine of the top 10 vehicles previously owned by buyers of the Colorado and Canyon are GM cars and trucks.
Owners of full-size Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks made up more than 16 percent of the consumers who switched into both smaller GM pickups, according to IHS data.
"That was ominous," Libby said. "There may be a deeper issue here" related to the potential for undercutting sales of higher-margin models."
