    I'm not concerned about getting cold air to the engine, since with the turbo the air will be heated anyway, but with air flow & filtration.

     

    On my Harley, just opening up the very restricted airbox & mufflers there was a significant increase in power. Once I went farther, (also increased it from 88CI to 95CI and more) with full true dual exhaust with low restriction mufflers, a complete new intake with a smooth bore and very little restriction from the air cleaner, cams, etc., the power increase was very noticeable. All the increases in engine volume, cams, etc. would have be pointless without a very low restricted intake and exhaust.

    The CAI intake systems come equipped with a high-flow filter design of some kind. This alone can increase the power potential of your car’s engine quite a bit, sometimes up to 5 percent. The stock air filter is often one of the biggest obstructions of the intake path; it drastically limits airflow and reduces fresh air infiltration. Cold air and short ram intake designs replace the stock air filtration system with a high flow cone filter, which usually has an increased surface area over stock designs. Also, high flow filters generally use an oiled cotton or similar filter element to replace the stock design’s paper filter.
    The way cold air and short ram intake systems function is by removing restriction from the intake path. The more air your car can draw in and mix with fuel, the more power it is able to make. This allows the engine to maintain a high-velocity and low-turbulence flow of air.

     

    I'm not looking for huge bump in power and won't be tearing into the engine, just want a less restricted air intake path.

     

    Not relevent to turbo engines, air volume is limited by boost pressure = it's a forced air sytem, even with restrictions the turbo can force all the air required, up to & beyond the design limits. You could make the "straw" (intake) as big/clean as you want, the turbo will only shove in as much air as the design limits, it will be pressure limited, the rest will be diverted.

     

    You could increase the boost pressure & gain HP.......but how much the engine could take is another matter & I'm betting Ford won't tell ya - lol.

    LMAO - I like the references to the others given they are ALL clones of the Fusion (the "wide mouth" look). Have they seen a 6 in person? I've seen turds better looking. I like the "2014 Passat".......um, ah, the Passat might be the single most boring car in the road. Keeping up with Toyota? LMAO, please, they haven't had an orginal thought in a decade or more. Toyota is the company that copied BMW down to the but ugly rear end......yeah, they have a clue.

     

    Like the 90's (95? 96? IIRC) Passat the Fusion has changed auto design - all of the sedans bear some resemblance to the Fusion. It may get a refresh but it will be the design others are based on for quite some time (even if it's an Aston-Jag lol)

  4. Any word on when the next-gen EB 2.0 will make its way into the Fusion? When it was announced a few months ago it sounded to me as if it was going to happen without a model year or two.

    As with the redesign I wouldn't let it hold you up - it ain't going to be any kind of game changer. The current 2.0 is perfectly fine, good low end & can move the fusion pretty quick if need be = fine for sedan (remember it ain't an Edge). Game changers would be if Ford would join this century & dump the torque converter auto - direct shift, even a CVT would be better. Another game changer would be bring a diesel here. Going from 26 to maybe 30mpg ain't much.

     

    If you want to wait, wait but I don't see it as being "all that".

  5. Happens to my 2013 sometimes. Also the opposite - doesn't go off when I think it should but I wrote that off to not being close enough. I think the sensors are just flaky.

    Flaky is a good description.........

    • Approaching vehicle goes off when there's nobody in the palrking lot except me? check
    • Parking sensor activates & beeps while sitting at a stoplight (random times)? check
    • BLIS lights up & stays lit for a guardrail? check

    Works well overall but it can be a bit of a nuisance at times.

  6. I just did a bit of research on the Belts in Oil system and I'll be the first to admit this is a technology I was not familiar with.

    Although I still couldn't find a definitive answer to my question on maintenance it looks like it is more of a "lifetime" item and wouldn't require changing like a traditional timing belt.

    Not familiar either..........but.......having spent quite a bit of time in VW land I'm very skeptical of "lifetime" anything. First of all one must define "lifetime" - often the company's idea doesn't match the customer. Much like timing chains, properly engineered belts have a far better track record - chains are advertised to "lifetime" and very often aren't. Belt changes are just fine in my book, costly but the service interval is generally around 100K = how many will you actually have done? One?

     

    Interference? I'd bet yes, haven't seen an engine in recent memory that wasn't.

  8. I wasn't talking about dongles. I was talking about a usb flash drive.

    Flash drives are a dying breed, be gone in a year or two - SD cards being cheap & dongles = death. Most modern computers come with an SD card reader & USB ports.

     

    But it matters little, cheap as RAM is Ford should have made the NAV internal.........odds are high it would be the same $149 for the upgrade - lol.

    Then there is the matter of the window sticker numbers and the recent controversies surrounding supposedly overstated numbers by Hyundai, Ford, etc. I feel a consumer is still left in the dark by all of this.

    And really what can one do to help moron consumers? Example being the woman in Ca who sued Honda becuase she was to stupid to get the whole "your mileage may vary concept". Hyundai was found to have improperly performed the tests = not good, overstated the results. Ford dropped the numbers (see akirby's marketing) - they were not found to have performed the tests incorrectly.

     

    But the summary is still the same that it varies widly by the driver & the tests are NOT reflective of the technology currently in use. Gassers are usually pretty close as that's what the test is geared to. Hybrids often don't meet the results as the tests are measuring pipe emissions & calculating mpg during a test. Diesels routinely far exceed the sticker due to the calculations geared to gassers.

     

    There's a member here who gets the hybrid mpg.........he has quite a bit of experience driving hybrids & it's also evident he's not a ham fisted pedal stomper.

     

    How exactly do you make an estimate for a consumer that can't even begin to grasp all the things that impact mpg - ethanol %, temp, altitude, road conditions, gradient, tires, etc ..............all the way down to what you turn on inside the car during the drive.

     

    What has changed with smaller turbo engines and hybrids is that the range has gotten larger than it used to be so there is more variance in the real world results. You can do a lot better but you can also do a lot worse...................................

     

    All you can really say about the window sticker numbers is thats what you'll get if you drive EXACTLY like the EPA test under the exact same conditions.

     

    Lol - yep, it's a guideline at best. You have to use your own experience as how your driving relates to the sticker.

     

    Window sticker is right on the money with my car and driving habits. Couldn't be happier.

     

    Well I think I'm going to sue Ford! The sticker says 26mpg avg..............I'm @ 25.73 lifetime - I've been screwed. :hysterical:

    (but as pointed out my commute pretty much matches the guidelines)

    Lol - reminds me of the folks that drive all over town for .05/gallon.........I always think "um, ah, for 12 gallons that's $.60" :) If it's so bad that it's impacting your life financially then move on to something that better fits your needs (if there is one).

  10. Pretty sure they added the sd card just for the nav maps. You already have 2 USB ports and USB sticks are fare more prevalent.

    Um, yeah, okay...........we're all talking about USB "dongles" (small or large) & USB sticks are more common? :hysterical:

     

    Yeah, dongles are common but it would be easier if the slot was available & I don't have to use any dongle but as I said, it is what it is.

     

    It's pretty umimportant to me - both my USB slots have fried every SD card (in a dongle) I've tried & I haven't had it fixed yet (they work until you start the car with them in & then = gone, I'm assuming some sort of surge).

  11. My SE has the My Ford Touch/Sync system with NAV. I notice that when I first insert a memory stick (with my music) in the USB port it takes it awhile to download all the information so it can be played. Is it downloading to memory or is it downloading to a hard drive? What about the NAV information?

    No hard drive, just ROM. A bit annoying they give you a SD card slot & then take it with the NAV card but it is what it is.

  12. I would love to see the hatchback version of this car sold in the USA. I really hate the small trunk opening on my Fusion and this would solve that problem. And no hood prop rod either.

    Yeah, likely the two biggest changes I'd make....the trunk access is bad & a prop rod looks/is so ghetto. Glad I'll miss the ghetto physical buttons, the 70's called & they want there buttons back.

    My primary concern is not about cost. It is more about oil quality, performance and vehicle lifecycle. The oil is what determines vehicle life long AFTER the warranty is expired. Virtually any $2 generic oil will get a modern car thru the "too-brief" warranty period. I need more than that because I don't trade-in every 5 yrs.................

     

    Here's a link to a company that will allow you to seperate fact from fiction. Used oil analysis, used them before & they're excellent. Gives you the comfort of knowing exactly what's happening inside the engine.

    Since we're on the topic - Ford can & really they should deny warranty claims if you use any oil that's not on their approved list (don't meet their specifications)..........even if said oil is "better" than what they specify.

  15. The Magnuson-Moss act does say that. The burden of proof DOES lie with Ford. BUT that is not how it works in the real world. In Ford's eyes (the issuer and fulfiller of your warranty), you are guilty until proven innocent. They do not 'take your word for it'. IF you disagree with their yea or nay on your repair, by the time you pay your lawyer to beat Ford, or any company automotive or otherwise, you will have paid more than the repairs would have cost you. Keep your receipts for timely services with correct products, use a reputable repair facility. That way when Ford denies the claim, you can go back to the repair entity for reimbursement. Akirby, FoMoCo squeezes dealers hard to keep warranty numbers down. Tie does not go to the runner, it goes to Ford. On a personal note, its interesting to me that people will spend >$30K on a car then squirm over a couple bucks in oil changes.

    Not nearly as dire as you make out, it's often cheaper to repair the vehicle than go through the court system. As I mentioned even the poster child of warranty weasels - Volkswagen (VAG) often pays up when pushed.............especially in the days of twitter, youtube, and other outlets.

     

    And you're aware it may not be $$$ - I can't even count the number of times a dealer or other service center mucks up the job. One that springs to mind when I took my VW to a dealer. This is a car with a DSG (computer shifted manual) & they tell me they're going to "flush the torque convertor"...........um, ah, it doesn't have one........buh-bye now. And would anyone really think Goob-lube will use the correct oil? (if they even have it). It ain't dollars, it's knowing the job is done right.

     

    I know Ford is stingy with warranty claims, but I have not heard of a case recently where an engine failed and Ford refused to cover it because the owner didn't have all their oil change receipts. Not saying it can't happen or doesn't happen, just that I don't remember it being reported here.

    Yep, and to a certain extent it's cheaper than going to court.

  16. One of the dealers we visited when shopping for our Fusion Hybrid told us that Ford is also cracking down on this and denying warranty claims. He said that it's important to have the oil changed at an ASE Certified shop and to save all those receipts. He said that Ford can't deny the warranty claim as long as you have receipts to prove that the oil was changed at an ASE certified shop.

    He (or she) is lying. Read the Magnuson-Moss act. Akirby nailed it - the burden of proof is on Ford. The legislation was specifically written to protect the consumer from a manufacturer who would require service to maintain a warranty. Ford would have to prove the failure was due to lubrication failure. Years of owing VAG products (nobody tries to wiggle out of warranty than VAG) makes one familiar. Ford would have to prove you either did not change the oil or used an incorrect oil which caused the failure (& the failure wasn't due to some mechanical part such as the oil pump failing).

  17. ^ you aren't kidding. I was washing the car and just kept hearing the locks open and close. I finally got sick of it and left the keys on the porch instead of my pocket.

    Do that everytime I wash the car, leave the keys away from the car.
