  1. I borrowed a friend's 2013 F150 this weekend for some moving I was doing and the leather on that wheel was much more like what I would prefer on a wheel. That being said, I've handled a sample of the leather used for various surfaces in the Fusion at work, and it is definitely real leather, the finish on it just makes it feel very similar to the vinyl with the same grain pattern that is used on other surfaces in the Fusion. Maybe this was the goal?

Or maybe durability? I did like the smooth leather on VAG wheels......but....all of them failed (the smooth finish broke) at some point - maybe the texture was to avoid this?

May not be the best but at least it beats hard plastic :)

  2. Actually they changed the bodies so now they actually resemble the cars they're based on.

Still a shell over steel = only done so idiots can think "yee haw, I'm driv'n me a rac'n car just like Bubba Gump"

I wasn't referring to the drivetrain nor whether they'll make an ST version - simply that NASCAR has nothing to do with it

  3. .........................We can debate all day about whether what they did was ethical..................................

Nothing to debate. Somebody defines the rules of the game & you play by those rules = ethical. Ford doesn't make the rules, they simply play by them. Anyone who thinks Ford is behaving any differently than any other company is foolish.

Think the EPA (or any other govt agency) has their act together is also foolish. Most all gassers struggle to meet their EPA numbers while diesels routinely exceed the numbers...........yeah, those tests are accurate.

  4. Put the MKZ back end with the Fusion Front End; now THAT would be fantastic. I saw the MKZ in the showroom. It just didn’t appeal to me. The interior felt "funny". Nothing I could tangibly state...just an overall feeling. Much more prefer the Fusion...guess that’s why I bought one!

That's exactly what I thought..............Fusion front/MKZ rear................but then the MKZ rear looks similar to the Alfa...I mean Dodge...........Dart.

MORE? I'm already paying more for this Fusion than an SHO Taurus... and HEY, I drive an Acura. I wouldn't have minded a Honda, they just had ghastly colors that year and the Civic was uglier in 1993.

Well that's what a Mondeo runs, it's something like 35 - 45,000 (USD) = it's more expensive hence the options.

You must the be exception that proves the rule :) - most want the name Acura & won't pay up market prices for a Honda (hence the names).

  5. Sounds like you have reversed "HEV" and "PHEV" in your answer. The Energi PHEV has a bigger battery than the Hybrid HEV. The Energi stays in EV mode at higher speeds than the Hybrid.

No, there is no water cooling.

Thanks....for both corrections................my mistake, there is water cooling (& heating) in the Focus electric..........I hate it when I confuse vehicle details :hysterical:

  6. ......................When you operate in EV mode at higher speeds, you start to get efficiency problems because of things like back electromotive force ( EMF ) which means you need higher voltages for efficiency. Ford has variable voltage controls on their 2nd and 3rd generation hybrids but there are diminishing returns with this feature. HEVs have very different design goals than PHEVs and a compromise car that does both is difficult. It's rumored that Toyota engineers did not want to make the Prius a PHEV for this reason but marketing over-ruled. The current crop of PHEVs are not very cost effective.

Exactly. Two entirely different setups. While they may seem the same on the surface they are not. PHEV battery pack is small (relatively) when compared to a HEV. Lithium Ion batteries have many great features such as power to weight..................they also have two weaknesses, both of which affect hybrid use. Ever read about battery fires? This is due to discharging beyond it's limits (about 20%) - this generates massive heat for a LI-ion battery. They also get hot when discharged at a very high rate. They can take a higher discharge rate than other types but it's a factor. Given the much smaller pack in the PHEV I'd wager they're right at the safe limit with the 62mph limit. The HEV can do much higher with a larger battery pack & it's associated capacity.

Edit - example, is not the battery pack water cooled in the HEV? I'd wager that has a lot to do with it's capabilities (allowing them to push it as far as possible).

Yes, of my first 3 months of ownership (approx 60 commuting days) I tracked 41 days of morning and afternoon commutes (saved snapshots to photobucket), along with the outside temp during each morning and afternoon commute. I wanted to get some data on how the cold (and hot) weather affected MPG, and whether it affected it to a similar degree as my Prius or 2010 FFH. Cold weather sucks for MPG in the 2013 FFH, but also was the case in the others as well.

We should remember this affects all vehicles & not just hybrids. Turn on the heat, AC, seats, etc = drop the mpg. Ideal is no electric load & a relatively moderate temperature.

Also, using Toyota & engineers in the same sentence is an oxymoron..............like jumbo shrimp.

  7. If I could get the MKZ with the fusion grill, I'd get it.

Not a fan of the silver mustache

Neither was I..........until I saw some real world pictures posted in a thread here - looks much better in the real world than ads & pics I've seen elsewhere. I still like the "trout mouth" better but the MKZ isn't as ugly as I first thought (& I do like the back end better).

Remember the Mondeo IS the flagship model for Ford Internationally as there is no International Taurus or even Lincoln. That's why they are so much more expensive there.

And let's also not forget the Mondeo is a fairly important vehicle for Ford in Europe. One in five vehicles sold in Great Brittan is a Mondeo.............that's pretty siginificant.

  8. i fully understand the differences between ROW vehicle markets and the US markets.

Same reason Walmart is a success here - cheapskate Americans. They've always gotten the better stuff............because they're willing to pay for it. A Mondeo cost close to an MKZ = they can afford to use more expensive parts.

Likely wouldn't fly here - already whining about the cost of a Fusion..............bump it up another $10,000 and see what happens.

And then you have to also factor in the dumbass American culture...........there's a reason we have Lexus, Acura, Lincoln, Infiniti. Americans are far too stupid (& vain) to accept that options/build are what makes the item cost $$$$. In America they need a big label to prove how much they spent. I mean really - you expect me to drive a $40,000 Camry? No way, I need a logo to prove I spent $40,000..............hence Lexus.

Not unique to Europe either (or more accurate, it is unique to America). You can buy $5,000+ Seiko in Japan...............think that would fly in America?

  9. In my opinion, this would be worth the wait, if there is any additional wait. I love adaptive cruise!

And I was impatient enough to order 2 cars to see which one came in first. (Ordered both with adaptive cruise...)

Have to agree - 5 minutes on the highway & the adaptive becomes a "must have" feature.

  10. The wheel is a bit thinner...............but the material seems fine. I like the bit of texture to the leather, might be more durable than the smooth.............given every single VAG wheel I've come across had some of the smooth part "fail" (not fail, just not smooth anymore).

Aside from the ride & handling the interior materials are the most impressive feature. Soft touch anywhere you might come into contact = nicely done. There is the piano black......but hey nobody's perfect.

  11. ...........but this ABS module is all thats left..and while the other small cosmetic things were fixed and were nothing in my eyes...this just seems big to me and leaves me worried at their quality of work and hoping its pretty high.

I can certainly relate - I still have an ever so slightly wrinkled headliner (you have to be a bit OCD to see/notice it) & the reason is.......not certain I want to have the car taken apart, especially the interior.

On the upside - how was the work on the bumper? The shift bezel? If they turned out fine it would seem you have a dealer capable of doing good work.

  12. A bunch of dents in roof, a couple on fender...hood and trunk seem to have survived somehow. Drivers chrome window trim has a few dents too. Body shop visit friday, insurwnce adjuster Monday. Still very not happy.

Hopefully it'll all be a distant memory in a few months.

On the Karma side maybe this is the one bad thing that will happen to your car?

  13. ................... I removed their license plate frame before i went to work this morning and threw it in the trash sort of angrily.

I do that almost as soon as I'm off the lot - I didn't get a check for being a rolling billboard.

(even worse I refuse to accept delivery of a car with any glue on advertising)

    :)

  14. Ah, dealerships - and here I was thinking maybe......just maybe I'd seen the last of horrible when I changed brands. I didn't think anyone can be as bad a VW's network (good cars, horrible dealer network).

Some of my past "fun" w/ dealers -

    1. Was told by tech they would "flush" the torque convertor........um, ah car doesn't have one....shouldn't you know that?

    2. Overfill, twice. Confusion caused by specifying capacities in metric while oil comes in US measurements......really? Simple math is too tough?

    3. Used wrong oil - which voids the warranty...........um, ah, you're aware they changed the specification, right? Guess not.

That's the short list - this is what makes sites like this so valuable, it does pay to know more about your car. Sucks, but checking up on the dealers seems to be the norm.

So it seems that concensus is that full synthetic oil is recommended AT LEAST ~ 7.5K or when oil life monitor hits 25%. I just don't trust dealer actually using synthetic, even if you ask and pay for it. The thing is I would still like to have the dealer perform all the other recommended inspections and rotate tires for me. Change the oil yourself and then take to the dealer for the rest? Can that affect warraty?

Has anybody purchased that Premium Maintenance Plan? Is it worth it?

Well............Ford says a blend is okay.........I wouldn't use it however. Not with a turbo I won't, only full synthetic thank you very much. The only way you'd know if in fact they used full synthetic is by the part number - find the part number for Motorcraft full synthetic in the appropriate grade. Read the receipt before paying (or accepting) the car. See above, I've had them drain & refill.

Keep the receipt for the oil changes (should do this anyway) - it's illegal for them to deny warranty coverage for vehicles serviced elsewhere (including at the shade tree garage).

    Magnuson-Moss act - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson%E2%80%93Moss_Warranty_Act

(what it does is put the burden of proof on the manufacturer, they can't specify where service is to be performed)

I intend on sending a letter to the dealer service manager and calling Ford customer service. Even after i told them the differences in the capacities for the 3 main Fusion engines. I even said, maybe you got the 2.0 liter ecoboost mixed up with the hybrid 2.0 liter. Didnt help. Grrrr.

Ford customer service is the way to go, seems this dealer doesn't want to listen. Dealers do seem loath to admit an error.......why is it so hard to believe that a customer might actually have a clue. No, no, fight with them & piss them off - yeah, that's good customer relations.

  15. That's true...and it sucks when they want to wash your car EVERYTIME YOU TAKE IT IN FOR THEM TO COVER SOMETHING UNDER WARRANTY...im starting to see fine scratches all over the touch panel black area on the door. It really sucks that area is made of glossy plastics because its the outside of the car and scratches so damn easily. Truly only for hands only. Any rag would scratch that.

Yep, have to tell them not to do it. Last dealer I used did a "hand wash"........go in the back & see towels laying all over the floor, hanging out of the bucket = no thanks, that will not be touching my car.

I like my buffer and all but I'd prefer not to use it to fix someone else's damage :hysterical:

  16. I got my oil changed at the dealer I bought the car from on Saturday morning, and let's just say I am not happy now. ................................

Today I decide to check the oil and owners manual. I checked the level and my partner looked at it too. He agreed with me it was way overfilled (a good inch over the hole in the dipstick which is above the full mark. The owners manual says 4.5 qts for the Hybrid which makes sense. .........................

It could be that I knew the oil level is high, but the engine sounds like it is louder. Maybe it is trying to process the extra oil and is sort of "choking' on it. The fuel mileage hasn't seemed to suffer, but that is tough to tell with the EV mode and depending on how much EV has been used.

Sucks but not at all unusual - never leave the dealer without checking the oil fill level. Had the same thing happen (more than once). Overfilling can be almost as bad as running low on oil - not 100% on it's specific impact on Ford products.

General - 10,000 miles is no biggie for modern synthetic oils. Had Blackstone do several used oil analysis, had more miles left even @ 10K. Wives tale is "break in oil" or requirement to change the oil early the first time.................if it were Ford would have stated in in the manual. Now I'd definitely keep an extra eye on oil levels, 4 bangers have been known to eat a bit of oil early in their lives.
