  1. How many situations can one think of that doesn't afford a 30-minute advance time?

Any emergency. And just one of those is enough to warrant me having my own vehicle.

And I actually take pride in my vehicles. Publicly shared vehicles are going to be mistreated piles of garbage in no time. Have you seen what the seats of cabs and buses look like??

  2. Autoline Daily about this subject plus interesting info about LED lights.

I don't use my F-350 but for a few times each quarter to tow our fifth wheel RV and maybe twice/month to haul stuff.

I would be interested in "renting" a truck only when I need it and maybe a lux car on long trips or for special events.

If I could "order/request" an autonomous car to show up in my drive at a scheduled time or with a 30min advance time.. I might be swayed to buy into this program.

Maybe today I would like to have a sport sedan and tomorrow a van...

It would be convenient in some instances for sure. But only really to augment existing owned vehicles for most people, not to replace them.

  3. If you're familiar with the mass migration of the people of West Virginia, Ohio, VA and NC to Myrtle Beach every summer (esp Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day), you can imagine the hole it would leave in such a community property as shared cars.

I'm familiar with the same flow of people making a complete mess of Annapolis traffic on their way to the Maryland and Delaware shores.

  4. I'd say personal ownership of cars is extremely efficient. They're used when they're needed, and not when they aren't.

Plus they are always in the right place. You need to go somewhere? You don't have to wait for a vehicle to arrive. You have one there all the time: yours. Another example of how this only works in the city. To reach rural areas in any reasonable amount of time there would need to be a ton of these automated vehicles sitting out in the middle of nowhere that hardly ever get used or are constantly in motion to be in the right place at the right time, which is horribly energy-inefficient.

  5. I think the MKC has too much of a "ovarian/fermium" look for me to consider.

I tend to agree. Could change my mind with some subtle exterior and performance tweaks though to give it a little more aggressiveness, so here's hoping they do a Red Label version that may appeal to me.

  6. Many here, talk out of both sides...when we talk about low volume vehicles like Flex,or small volume sales like Taurus SHO, we hear about how it's not about volume,it's about the huge profitability, and getting people into the brand. When the diesel 1/2 ton is mentioned, all the talk is about how diesel is too low volume, the take rates are too low, and we should only worry about the majority of the customers that don't want a diesel 1/2 ton. Interesting.

The difference is whether or not a diesel F150 would bring in buyers that it's not already getting. The Flex and SHO do, whereas a diesel F150 may just take buyers away from those who would have opted for an Ecoboost F150 anyway.

  7.

If they have production capacity for Escape hybrid and enough hybrid components to go around and they're not worried about simply cannibalizing C-max sales.

I don't think there are any technical issues with offering an Escape or MKC hybrid. It comes down to production capability and marketing.

Far as I'm concerned, the C-Max is a dud. Escape Hybrid would likely be able to sell at lower cost at higher prices.

  8.

I think Lincoln is planning to have performance models and hybrid models across the board, so it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see a hybrid MKC as part of that plan. C-max already has a hybrid/PIH powertrain available for the platform so I don't think it's required that Escape have it too.

Depends how many unique parts it will require to use the C-Max's setup in the MKC. Plus if Lincoln determines there's enough demand for a hybrid small CUV, then I would think the folks at Ford would reach the same conclusion and want to be in on the party.

  9. I thought today's 2.3 is a totally different animal from the old 2.3 of Mustang II days?? And I'm talking about non-turbo vs non-turbo.

    True?

It's as different as the current 5.0 is to the old Windsor motor. Is there still a naturally-aspirated 2.3 in the lineup though? Thought that was replaced by the 2.5 and/or 1.6/1.9EB's.

  10. If you think health care costs are out of control look at the increase in tuition costs of education at the HS level and college levels in the USA lately.

Without price controls, that is inevitable when the government keeps handing out blank checks for kids to go to school.

And the vocational schools here are a start, but I think they need to be instituted earlier and far wider.

  11. Besides, are these autonomous cars going to dodge pot holes?

I could see how technology could be developed so they do. All you really need is a sensitive radar that examines the road surface for imperfections. I believe Land Rover already uses a related system to automatically adjust the suspension for road conditions.

That said, I don't see how you would ever be able to entirely eliminate the need for manual input in at least some situations, especially in rural areas. This sort of tech will only ever really fully work in high density, high traffic areas where the vehicles would be able to operate with each other in a network.

  12. Another example that we are taxed to much without a fair return.

Because it's being spent in so many wrong ways. So much "education" in this country does nothing to actually prepare students for real life. People graduating who don't know how a credit card works. Don't know what compound interest is. Have no idea how savings accounts or investments work. Can't create a household budget. Don't know how to shop for healthy food. Just the simple skills needed to survive. Perhaps we should get that part figured out first before we go promising every boy and girl that he/she can be an astronaut if they work hard.

  13. Agree, also agree with the statement that a balance is needed.

So how do we come to a balance where those that work a full time job or hold two part time jobs no longer need taxpayer money to survive?

A good start would be to dispel this nonsense being peddled by the government that every child is capable of and deserves a college education. Some people are destined to be service and trade workers who shouldn't be put on the same educational path as engineers or doctors. Stress teaching them actual useful skills instead of theoretical mumbo jumbo that will never apply to their lot in life.

One smaller improvement that should be done immediately nationwide (and will now be required in the Maryland high school curriculum next year) is to have a mandatory course on personal finance.

  14. ! Nostalgia sells !! (Which is why there will be a 2.3L turbo in the 2015 Mustang.)

I don't think too many people are nostalgic about the 2.3T in the 80's Mustangs. There's a reason they were only offered for a few years. The 2.3 was going to exist whether the Mustang used it or not, as there is a need for it in other vehicles. More than likely, it just happened to check all the boxes that were needed in the Mustang also, so there it is.

  15. If the Convertibles were launched at the same time as the Fastbacks, the demand would still be there. Not only is there Summer year around in Florida & California as well as parts of Southern Arizona, Fleet Orders by Rental Car Companies would have scooped up every available Convertible Unit that wasn`t destined for Special Retail Order or Dealer Stock. The hold up is due to "Material Hold", not weather. Once the (commodities) are in inventory, JOB 2 will begin.

It's also a matter of making production simpler with an all-new model. Remove one entire body style and there's one less complex system that could potentially slow down the launch.
