  1. When I think of Cobalt SS, I have the same nasty perceptions of the last Neon SRT. If you've seen them 2-3 years after the fact, you see the same issues with most of them. The body kits are not even aligned, they ratter, they seem buzzy, the interior materials are falling off if they havent' already. It's just a poor product overall...And with the Cobalt, I'm seeing similar issues, except the interior is holding out a bit better.

    Agreed.

The long, clumsy, poorly-balanced doors and seat belts that dig into your neck on the 2 door Cobalt should send any prospective buyer heading the other direction in a hurry.

The Cobalt is wayyyyy past its prime, and its prime was never great to begin with.

tsp08_icon.gif 2009 Ford Escape, 2009 Mazda Tribute, and 2009 Mercury Mariner: good performance in front, side, and rear tests and standard electronic stability control

Revamped Escape is a winner: This small SUV was re-engineered for the 2009 model year. Among the changes are modifications to the frontal airbags and safety belts plus structural changes to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. The new Escape improves from acceptable to good in the Institute's frontal offset crash test. A new seat design improves the rear crash protection rating from acceptable to good. Side airbags, optional before 2008 models, now are standard.

  7. FORD ESCAPE EARNS 5-STARS, TOPS TOYOTA AND HONDA COMBINED SAFETY AND FUEL EFFICIENCY RATINGS

    - 2009 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner earn government's top 5-star ratings for front- and side-impact tests - adding to Ford's leading number of five-star vehicles.

    - This fall, Escape and Mariner add a new 171-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with enhanced performance and fuel economy better or equal to the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV-4.

    - Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid also achieve five-star crash ratings.

    - Ford plans to double hybrid sales in 2009 on the strength of safety ratings that out-perform Toyota Prius.

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 18, 2008 - The 2009 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner compact sport utility vehicles added to Ford's leading number of top-safety-rated vehicles by earning five stars in each of the government's crash-worthiness tests. The results top the Toyota RAV-4 and, with the 2009 Escape's improved fuel efficiency, offer better combined safety and fuel efficiency ratings than the Honda CR-V.

2009 Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid also achieved five-star ratings, the highest possible scores, in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests to outpace the Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Toyota Prius. The Escape Hybrid arrived in 2005 as the world's only hybrid sport utility vehicle and today remains the only sport utility to offer at least 30 mpg city and highway ratings.

"Ford is a leader in safety and fuel economy - not even Toyota or Honda can match the new Escape's safety and fuel efficiency ratings," said Susan Cischke, Ford's senior vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. "Ford has more five-star-rated vehicles than any other automaker, and we've committed to lead or be at the top of every segment in which we compete in terms of fuel efficiency."

  9. Was it really necessary to repost a topic to give it a "more descriptive" title?

    Actually, yes.

"Ford Tops in Crash Rating" , is not news, and its not an accurate description of the article. We already know that Ford has significantly more 5 Star vehicles than any other manufacturer. Thats been a fact for years.

What is news, and of interest when people are focused on gas mileage, is that Ford sells the 5 star rated hybrids and Toyota Prius and Highlander are not 5 star rated.

Therefore, the title of the article should have reflected the topic of the article. It was about Hybrid crash ratings, (specifically Escape/Mariner/Trib vs the Highlander and Prius) not overall crash ratings for Ford.

  10. Actually, on my local radio, they said that they will switch production to the Highlander. They said there will be no layoffs. :shades:

except for the so called "temporary" workers, of which Toyota has many, as we know.

The fact is, due to Toyota's arrogance, it is now left in the unenviable position that has plagued the Big 3, making production decisions based on filling excess capacity, rather than using a more rational method.

  11. Looks like RJ was right after all......Toyota has WAY too much capacity for Tundra.

Toyota announced yesterday that all Tundra production at the Indiana plant will be cancelled, forever! Toyota will only have one plant building Tundras.

PRINCETON, Ind. -- Toyota Motor Corp. says it will not resume production of the Tundra pickup truck at its Princeton, Ind., plant in November as previously announced.

  12. My T-Bird weighs about 3,900 lbs, and it's a boat. My wife's 4Runner weighs about the same. I'm not calling for more regulation - but there ought to be some sort of self-imposed weight limit of 2 tons or so - out of a sense of decency if nothing else. 4,800 lbs. is not excessive, it's obscene.

Does your T-Bird have All Wheel Drive?

    a panoramic roof?

    DVD player and screens?

    seating for 7?

    6 speed trans?

    a refrigerator/freezer?

    6 disc CD/DVD with 5.1 surround sound

    Navigation system and satellite radio?

air bags and side curtains for three rows of passengers?

roof crush protection that far exceeds standards that are still being proposed?

5 star crash protection all around?

    >150 cu-ft of passenger space?

    power opening rear hatch?

    auto fold seats?

Would you really expect a large 7 passenger crossover that exceeds current safety standards to weigh less than an old passenger car with limited active safety features and options?
