Just curious if the issues plaguing the 2020 Explorer have been remedied. There are great incentives on them currently, so thinking about grabbing one. Does anyone have any insight to this? Should I look for the production date on the window sticker to be after a certain date? Thanks!

Here is an interesting article regarding the new Explorers and Aviators built at the Chicago Assembly Plant:  https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/ford/2020/11/19/ford-explorer-ranks-among-lowest-scoring-models-reliability-survey/3770227001/

    Hi All,

Really livid about my new Explorer and the two issues it's had so I'm curious to know if any of you out there have experienced the same. I've had the vehicle since September and it currently has 2,000 miles on it.

1.) Fault with the powertrain/awd system that once taken in was determined to be a bad chip?

2.) Front driver's side carpet is shredding away in big clumps and the area just in front of the seat bottom cushion is ALREADY stripped bare.

    Thanks,

    TT

UPDATE:  After bringing to dealer right after posting, the noise continues.  The dry start rattle is up to about 7 seconds from 5.  Now the transmission between 20 and 30 mph has a distinct rattling sound.  Windows are still snapping after closing.  The dealer says all of my problems are not happening when they have it.  When i picked it up from having the dry start up checked they said it didnt happen to them.  When i picked it up it rattled for me and has done so on every cold start or after it sits for an hour.  I dont trust it.

If you live in the USA - it’s time to speak to an attorney regarding your state’s lemon law (or research the law for you state on line).

    Good luck.

  5. I was in a line of vehicles today at my grandchildren’s school, waiting to drop them off.  Stopped ahead of me was a new, silver Lincoln Aviator, with my state’s new-car temporary license plate dated two days prior.  My vehicle was stopped at an angle to the Lincoln, and I had a clear, excellent view of the left side.  The color and the vehicle were striking.

As I looked at the Lincoln from inside my vehicle, I could see the left rear door was misaligned - it looked as though the rear of the door was lower than it should be.  The left rear bumper fascia (where it meets and aligns with the rear quarter panel) was also clearly not flush and aligned.  I was unable to see the front or right side.

I do not know the build date of this new vehicle but there were visible panel alignment issues that were very obvious.  I was surprised at the visible build flaws, and immediately wondered what else was wrong with the vehicle (that you may not be able to see).

In response to CoolScoop -- the the part that failed was the airspring and seal kit. The parts are still on backorder (since 8/16) and the vehicle cannot be moved. The wheel liners rest on the tires (picture attached).  The service advisor told me that I was the 47th vehicle listed on the backorder request.

Looks like we will be pursuing Texas lemon law assitance.

    Good luck.

I’m always amazed when a new vehicle that is currently in production has a defective part, and the manufacturer cannot provide a replacement part to the dealer so the vehicle can be fixed.

I bought a new 2015 Ford Expedition Limited 4x4, and the RF shock leaked all of its fluid before the first oil change.  The dealer ordered the part, but it was on “national backorder” for quite some time, although the vehicle model year was still in production.  The part eventually arrived and was installed, but it was an irritating process.

Good luck with your lemon law repurchase process.

Just an update -- My aviator has been inoperable since 8/16 and at the dealer since 8/18. Closing in on 30 days without a repair status.  Is anyone else having these proeblems -- i understand 47 avaiators have the same problem nationally.

Not sure if you live in the USA - and if so, what state - but it sounds as though you’re also closing in on a ”lemon law” requirement for being out-of-service for repairs.

  8. I would research the vehicle lemon law for your state, and if you qualify- contact and attorney and proceed with a repurchase or replacement by Ford.  Your vehicle will never be right, and it is obvious that Ford and its employees did a miserable job of building it.

    Good luck.

just brought home my new Lincoln Aviator Reserve with the Dynamic Handling Package, Reserve II, Tow Package, Illumination Package, Convienence Package and the ride with the 22 inchers on it does not ride very well at all.  A harsh ride and a ride that feels like there is a tire out of balance?  Rides like its on a wash board.  Also, the engine on start up runs rough for approx 30 seconds then smooths out to whisper quiet.   Is this the nature of the beast or should it go back to the dealer for a service visit?

Was the rough idle and rough ride present when you test drove the vehicle, prior to purchase?

Just heard from the dealer today, there are drains for the moonroof on both sides of the vehicle and one of them (driver side) was never connected at the factory.  As a result, water drained into the headliner.

Dealer is going to simply connect the drain to the tube, but the more complicated piece will be replacing my headliner because it shows a bit of water staining on it now.

Good luck.  The headliners are often installed in the vehicle before the front and back glass is installed.  Your dealer may have to remove the windshield or backlight to install it.

I have often wondered if automakers “trace back” defective assembly to specific workers and take disciplinary action?  It seems as though incompetent workers (or those that perform poor work on purpose or to sabotage a vehicle) get a pass and the auto manufacturer has to pay extra (warranty) to have the problem fixed - and the customer is left dissatisfied.

Saw a similar post from last year but thought I'd share my recent experience.  Just bought my 2020 Aviator 3 weeks ago and like it so far but:  The other night we hit some heavy rain on the highway and my son (sitting in second row behind driver) complained that his seatbelt was wet.  He had inadvertently opened his window for a second so I assumed that this is how it got wet, but it did seem strange.  Today I got it washed and noticed that there was water in the headliner and water drips around the top of the seatbelt so there's definitely an issue with a leaky seal somewhere.  Service isn't open on Saturday at my dealer but I'm going to bring it in next week and see what they can do.  Pretty disappointing to say the least.

Wow - good luck and let us know what is determined.

The Aviator assembly plant had massive quality and assembly problems - it sounds as though they still don’t have their act together.  Did you buy the vehicles new?  What is the build date?

All the Aviators are built in the Chicago plant. You have no option there. I think a later built date would help.  But COVID-19 ruined  everything.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the Aviator, nothing is close to it on the market. Just worried about the quality. And I typically keep my ride for 8 years. so trouble-free is important for me. And can't wait for 2021 model. Son needs my current car for school by the fall.

If you spend 30 minutes doing online research of the extremely poor launch and poor quality issues with the 2020 Explorer and 2020 Aviator, I think you’ll realize ANY 2020 Ford or Lincoln product built at the Chicago plant could have many, many quality issues.

Have you ever heard of an auto manufacturer trucking thousands and thousands of new vehicle to another plant, in another state, to have numerous defects repaired?  Ford even admitted the quality and launch issues with its latest SEC filing.

I own a 2015 Ford Expedition Limited 4x4, purchased new, and have never owned a Lincoln.  But, I would not consider any 2020 model of the Explorer or Aviator, due to the poor quality and manufacturing repeatedly reported by the media.

    Good luck in your decision.

Last February, I took delivery of a 2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve II with a Vin in the 20 thousands, and this thing is a nightmare to put it nicely.  IDK know how they are going to be able to repair everything that is wrong with it, and I could not get it back to the dealer for repair because just a few weeks after I took delivery of it the COVID19 shut down happened.  I am not happy with this many problems and want to give this car back to LFS as the other Aviator owners have done.  Because of the COVID19 crisis, I have had to drive this Aviator putting more miles on it. I am sure that it is going to make it harder to give back to the dealer or get them to accept it back.  I am just appalled this Vehicle has so many problems with it, and I have had newly Launched Lincolns in the past.  Because I didn't have that bad of an experience with my 2011 MKT, I leased after it launched I was bullish about getting the Aviator even though I heard it was having problems, BUT THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.  My biggest gripe is when it SLAMs on the breaks when I am backing up into my driveway because I live on a busy street. I have had some scares, and one time it slammed on the breaks while reversing, and I thought I had hit something.

Here is the list of things wrong with the Vehicle, and I am taking it to the dealer next week for the first time because they were closed all of April.  I will keep this thread updated as to how things are going.

Below is a list of things wrong I have made for the dealer.

    1. Slams on breaks when driving in reverse up my driveway and there is nothing in the way

    2. Parking brake comes on at random while the vehicle is in drive

    3. Folding mirrors open and close when I am driving down the road

    4. Blown Speaker on the front passenger side door, sound system sounds muddy

    5. False Alarms -  When my neighbor is cutting the lawn the anti-theft alarm goes off

    6. Vehicle raises and lowers at random (even when the key fob is not around)

    7. When using the phone as key the vehicle will say "to restart vehicle please use keyfob" then does not re-start until I have a keyfob on me

    8. When I lock the vehicle at night the interior lights stay on way too long

    9. Cluster bounces, the radio reboots as well as dash when I am driving

10.(drivers side) I have to extend the right seat cushion extension because when it is folded all the way back there is a hard lump

    11. (outside of the vehicle) Chrome strips all have creases in them, they look like they have been taken off and put back on at the factory

    13. Sometimes, the vehicle does not shift into reverse I have to turn it off then turn it back on

    14. Perimeter lighting just turns on and off at random, again no keyfob on me

    15. There is always a clicking noise coming from the vehicle when it is parked, it is always making a clicking noise

Research the “lemon law” for vehicles in your state, then contact an attorney if your vehicle qualifies.

Ford has admitted publicly and in SEC filings that they (and the UAW) did a miserable job of launching and building the 2020 Ford Explorers and Lincoln Aviator.

I'm ready to  buy a 2020 Aviator. It has 1100 miles and a Lincoln lemon law buy back.Would you do this?

    No.

Spend 15 minutes online researching the build and quality and defect  problems with that vehicle.  Ford and the UAW did a miserable job on many of them.

    Hi all!

I am the new owner of a 2020 Lincoln Aviator Black Label with the air suspension. I have a question about it though. I thought when you walk in the vicinity with the phone as a key (iPhone in my case) or the key fob, the lights would come on and greet you along with the vehicle lowering. I have the settings turned on in the menu for the car to lower itself when you walk up to it but the only way this seems to work is if I press the unlock button first. The car rarely automatically turns the lights on or lowers itself. Does this usually only work with the unlock button being pressed?

    Lincoln Calls this Approach Detection

    https://www.lincoln.com/luxury-suvs/aviator/features/design/

Mine only seems to do this when I press unlock though. Phone as a key works fine when I press the door handle to open and the lights come on.

Maybe you could return to the dealer with the car and the information you posted, and have them set-up the feature?

Lincoln Concierge just called to tell me that our "buy back" was declined.  I will be leaving it with the dealer to work on the current issues March 18, so we'll see.

Wow!  I would research the vehicle lemon law in your state, and contact and attorney that specializes in the law - if your vehicle appears to meet the buy-back criteria.

    Good luck.

  18. Fuel filter was replaced on our 2007 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4l engine 180,000 miles. Now we get steady service engine light, mash the accelerator and the engine RPM will barley get to 3000 rpm, car runs ok once speed is obtained but when you mash accelerator the engine is very rough. per Advance auto engine code is cylinder one issue. any idea please

Did you use a genuine Motorcraft fuel filter or an aftermarket one? Any other work done? Why did you change the fuel filter?
