As for this topic, I know you aren't going to want to hear this, but oh well, I will say it anyway--------------->The best intentioned policys that DENY the rights of the people of this country...........instituted for all the right reasons, end up being abused by someone, somewhere, sometime in power. It is why we are all vigilant of well intentioned schemes that supposedly are for the good of all that take away our rights.

     

     

     

    If you AGREE that abuse shown by the original topic starter is unseedy........used by government agencys; more than likely for a reason that it was not originally intended, then you must also agree that government intervention for causing the market to NOT be free just because it is YOUR worry is a must, or you are disingenuous.

     

    These visions are all dangerous unless voted in through representation. If We The People decide these policys are to strict and take away our rights, we will vote for those who want to revoke the law, correct! If it becomes a national spotlight issue, the politicians will take a stand, and we will vote accordingly.

     

    Freedom is about options, nothing more, nothing less. If we allow the few to dictate to the many because they "are just so much more caring than we are," then we deserve these kinds of things to happen, because we aren't paying attention. And that is when they get ya folks, when they slip it to ya, and the only way you know it is because you woke up with a sore rearend!!!!

    This is why the original Framers believed it was important to have a bill of rights with the Constitution. The Framers setup the Executive, Legislative & Judicial system as a means of checks, and balances to protect our rights against abuse. The early settlers felt it was necessary to leave England, to avoid the abuse of power which was occurring in England. The judicial system is suppose to keep the Executive and Legislative branches in check. This is difficult to do when the Bush administration fires Federal Judges...... politics at its worse. Our rights are under attack, WAKE UP AMERICA regardless of party platform, government is to be of the people, by the people. The American people should support publicly financed elections, set public spending limits, remove special interest from the campaign.....

    Meeting with vendors to discuss opportunities for improvement relating to the equipment they supplied, evaluating inventory in general stores looking for cost reduction opportunities, manpower reduction projects that TAR out (TAR is currently 100% ROI), Gas Fired equipment audits, Legionella audits, CPARS e.g. parts & purchases, Throughput issues, over cycle issues, etc.......On top of break downs and all the pet projects the IE's have. Oh and somewhere in there is planned maintenance a concept sometimes lost at Ford

     

    You really could be a Lean Manufacturing Manager with a question like that. FYI no company ever cut their way to profits, (hint) it's in the product.

    Why is the line down? Parts shortage related to equipment? No production parts? Blown up gearbox? need more info... Maybe I should bury my head in the sand then I could be you, and things would be normal in a perfect world.

  6. Ever heard of a "Launch Team" from the said plant getting the new systems and tooling.

    Funny thing is I believe these team volunteers are picked using seniority not whether the person would be an asset or not. Ford spends a fortune flying these guys in to Detroit on a Monday, paying for rooms, rental cars, food and then fly them home on Friday so they can work the weekend. They do this for 6 month's to a year or so prior to a launch. Most of the time they (hourly) show up at the build shops eat the complimentary donuts drink coffee and hang out for an hour or two then they are gone. They are supposed to see into the system, bring fourth problems they can foresee with maintenance and operation, basically get involved. I have had to show guys on the launch team for a year how to do something as easy as put a robot in teach after he spent a years at the build facility! Ask them how many free flights they have accumulated with frequent flyer miles and they can tell you though! But oh well that is the nature of the beast at FOMOCO Pass the blame, no accountabilty, not my job, I was not trained, no one told me to etc etc etc.

    But hey why should I care we are and will sell equipment and work even if all the plants close or move.

     

    This was old Ford.... The programs in the new Ford have been cut to the point vendors will not serve coffee and donuts. Besides just repeat the same BS phrase "this is Ford Spec" or "this change has been bought off by VO."

    Repeat the same phrases for any question and you have a buy off meeting. Minus the coffee and donuts...

    I just realized I'm passing the blame... forget what I said, the automation will make cycle time on it's own.

    Even if the gearbox will explode because it can't handle the speed required to make cycle time. Those scum bag skilled trades cause all of this you know. :reading:

    Cycle time, is the amount of time it takes to complete any given operation, on any given line. If 99.9% of the operation was designed by brand X vendor, WHY SHOULD IT TAKE TWO YEARS TO GET IT UP TO SPEED? I can throw all the "ethic" I want at the problem, but the more "work" I put into the operation will count against my efficiency. Which is called first time through or throughput. People on the outside know this as Harbor Hours. :ohsnap:

  8. Other than making sure they are payed properly: why should the supervisor be chasing, grown men who know better how to do a job than anyone, around to make sure they are working? Everyone knows what crappy shape this company is in, and saying the supervisor lets is happen just blows my mind. No one is supposed to do work unless a supervisor is standing there with a bull whip making people work? If thats the case, last one out turn off the lights please.................

     

    "Ouch" I sense anger in your reply :redcard: I respectfully disagree with your position "Other than making sure they are payed properly", but then again, isn't that what's being said when I wrote "if this is true then what is the supervisor doing".

    Let me explain, if I were to assign a job, and the people on the job did not show up until 2.5 hours into the shift then I would start their time when they started. Furthermore, the supervisor should do more than just pay people.

    Let's hope, for the sake of Ford, that the supervisor has more expertise than just being able to navigate the payroll system. In closing, I wouldn't suggest the supervisor chase grown men or women, but I would suggest that "you" tone down the sexist remarks..... Have a good day :rockon:

    8:00 am arrive at jobsite

    8:30 am have looked over jobsite and starting to determine what to do. Time to go for for break.

    9:45 end of 15 minute break(which was more than an hour)and go back to jobsite.

    Eventually by the end of the day do 2 hours work.

     

    Evening: Listen to Hargrove and Charley tell you that the problem is unfair trade practices.

     

    Typical VO ME day:

     

    7:30 arrive at plant meet with dept. ME,

    review failures (opportunities) from previous production day,

    compare the production loss of today, with the previous 12 production losses (opportunities)

    8:15 am leave ass kicking meeting

    8:30 am Meet with vendor at production line, and review alarm codes in PLC

    8:45 Vendor states they followed VO specs when building automation, VO ME agrees with Vendor together they agree to reset alarm values, any alarms from this point will be new alarms; therefore, the issue is now a maintenance concern (opportunity)

    9:00 am Vendor and VO ME meet with dept ME, VO explains how the issue has been fixed, the VO ME explains the problem was a plant maintenace concern (opportunity)

    9:30 am The VO ME and Vendor leave, they travel to the next plant with a maintenace concern (opportunity), before leaving they send out a meeting notice trying to help the dept ME identify future maintenance opportunities

     

    11:00 am somewhere in Ford the cycle repeats itself (not to be confused with cycle loss meeting)

    If this is true, then what is the supervisor doing? If the supervisor allows this to happen, you may have identified part of the problem.

  11. You may not feel the same if cleaners, leaders, and other "choice" jobs were filled by someone's "opinion", especially when that person is not your boss.

     

    WE pay the Union to look after all our jobs, we do not pay Chairmen to secure jobs for his buddies or pet children. If the company has problem employees, get THEM to get rid of them. Seniority is the foundation of Unionism, whether you agree with the principle or not. If you want to pick and choose, simple. Quit the union.

     

    This discussion has been around a while. Merit and ability or Seniority. Every trade has people within the trade, with strengths and weaknesses. Just like a general practitioner and a heart specialist, if I have a heart problem I'm going to see the heart specialist. With that said, a fair process needs to be established when putting together a project crew. First of all, not every trade person is interested in working construction projects. When merit and ability are equal, seniority rules . The type of job will determine the requirements of the people who lead the task,(too many chiefs not enough Indians is no good) the rest of the project is filled with people from within the trade(s), any overtime follows overtime equalization.

    Lets see... an apprentice comes into a trade after being on the line for X amount of years..... and a journeyperson teaches the apprentice how to do the job. The journeyperson passes on X number years of experience.... helping the apprentice become a journeyperson..... then the apprentice passes the journeyperson in seniority..... something wrong with this picture ......my guess is the apprentice may not get taught much... who knows the apprentice may even wash out of program based on journeyperson evaluation. :redcard:

  13. Nobody knows..buyouts are still up in the air. I'm wondering where people get these seniority cutoff dates from..Jan. 3 '95? Seems awfully specific, considering nobody knows what the final, actual # of buyouts will be. As far as the seniority list goes...I haven't looked at the damn thing in awhile. Why bother..your name won't go higher if you stare at it long enough. Whatever happens, happens..and nobody knows yet what that will be.

     

     

    Rumor has it the shift reduction will affect:

     

    940 production.... 43 trades divided amoung ele, m/w, pf, tm, carp etc.... Is that better no specific seniority range

  14. As a millwright with 1977 seniority, I was displaced in 1981 by MCC workers returning to the Rouge. I was told that 84 millwrights returned. A lawsuit was filed against the union and company over the seniority waivers which mysteriously disappeared. The suit was eventually dismissed in 1987. I never had steady work in the Rouge Area (including Rouge Steel) again. After being laid off in Nov 86 from the Powerhouse, I was preferentially place at Sheldon Road in August 1987. Many of the guys I worked and apprenticed with left the Rouge in the mid-late 80's. Quite a few took placements around the country. Other people can probably add their recollections.

     

    I knew trades from the powehouse "May their souls rest in peace" and to the people who suffered through the experience I wish you well one and all.

  15. It must have hurt to be turned down for Electrician. Not everybody can be one. Don't worry. The company needs some of the lesser trades as well, so don't worry. You'll still have a job.

    Please excuse my humor. Algebra is that better, I was having fun with the electrician trade. The point is, if people are to switch trades in mid stream (so to speak) why box yourself into "millwright". It is just as easy to be an electrician, as it is to be a millwright, as it is to be toolmaker etc etc..... What test round peg square hole.... once agian this is humor, I have to stop I'm having too much fun.......wiggy wiggy wiggy

  16. I wouldn't care if they made welders millwrights but, since you will be learning a new trade and be going thru a new apprenticeship don't you think you should have a new date of entry?If not then why even have trade seniority?

     

    Why all the focus on welder / Millwright if you are going to change trades..... go for Electrician, a little algerber, a volt meter, add a little ladder logic and poof all the hard work is done by someone else, if you get into trouble call an automation engineer

  18. started at mcc in 1974 skilled trade working in environmental control . laid off in 82 then I went to monroe stamping till 85. then I went to the rouge in late 85. Then to wixom in 86 till the present. Now I am waiting for a flow back assignment to another plant. I guess you could call me a traveling man Hope all the MCC people are doing well BYE FOR NOW.

     

    Never worked there, but did hear a bunch a stories, when MCC opened up they took people from the Rouge (trades) and it was their choice to leave the Rouge yada yada, so they were giving up recall rights to the Rouge if MCC closed, turns out MCC closes, and all these people who choose to leave now want back in to the Rouge, and a big fight starts (verbally) turns out former Rouge people were allowed back, even though it displaced some people out of the Rouge yada yada Bottom line was you needed like 71 trade senority to hold the Rouge otherwise you ended up parts unkown. Any truth to the story, it's been along time since any discussions about it.... I think that issue is what lead to 84 leveling senoirity but don't quote me. 1974 (trade)... you must have what pushing 40 yrs senoirity unless you hired in off the street as trades

  19. I had the 03 and now have the 07 and the brake dust seems the same to me, but I wash my cars almost weekly. I will say that I saw my in laws 07 that they didnt wash since they bought it 3 months ago and the wheels were black. I think as long as you wash your car once a month you shouldnt have issues. I did see they sell a brake dust shield but not sure how they are and if they casue any safety issues.

     

     

    Brake pads have been changed since 03 when Ford discovered through JD Powers, that a small percentage of the Expedition owners were not completely satisfied with the wheel appearance, due to brake dust. While brake dust is a common appearance issue on all manufacturers, Ford in a effort to satisfy their loyal customer base, made a proactive change in the Expedition brake pad. As always, total satisfaction is the Goal at Ford, we thank all of our customers for that loyal support. JD Power surveys are an important tool for Ford and their customers so let your voice be heard.

I think Granholm said "A spokeswoman said the governor doesn't oppose raising CAFE mandates, as long as it is technologically possible," The Detroit News articles are as slanted as they can be, They did support Devos, sounds like sour grapes from a slanted newspaper. But lets assume Granholm did support higher fuel standards and that support did hurt the big 3...so what.... It take a majority in Congress to pass anything, Granholm cannot be blamed for the actions of Congress. At some point in time we are going to have to face the issue of what CO2 emissions are doing to the planet. It may be too late to reverse our avg. temp rise, but we should try.

  22. Yes Richard, I know the Volvo truck line wasn't for sale, I was just saying they would have been better off with it! To 7Mary3, let me say this: The Hartford CT area water operation as well as the CT and MA state highway depts. used to be almost 100 percent Ford vehicles, from cars to pickups to mediums and heavies. They even had -- and still do -- Ford mowing tractors and payloaders! But when they sold the heavy truck unit, these municipal entities as well as thousands across the nation found they couldn't buy the beloved L-series any longer. So Ford lost that "we can sell you everything edge." Once these operations were forced to go non-Ford it opened the door for competition to get in the door. Now, when you go by these operations, you see Chevy and Dodge pickups, International, Freightliner and Sterling heavies AND mediums! You don't see any Ford mediums there. The cars are no longer all-Ford. Do you know how much Ford lost? In my opinion, hundreds of millions! My belief was that when you had school bus, construction vehicle, vocational, fire apparatus drivers etc. driving Fords they might have thought to themselves, "Gee, Ford makes a pretty good big truck, maybe I should buy a Ford car or pickup."

     

    Hence the request for "VOLVO" engine... Ask any super duty owner about their truck... Love the interior, the room, the ride, cargo capacity, etc.... wish it had a different motor, man that Cummins sure is quiet..... VOLVO would put them over the top, talk about conquest sales, I thought Alan had questions about all the different platforms, maybe an opportunity exist to consolidate resources

  23. I think the Volvo group used some of the of the money from the sale of Volvo Cars to Ford to finance the purchase of other interests. Cough Cough Mack.

     

    And yes Prevost (Pronounced Pree-Vo, it is French ya know) and Nova are sort of just included in Volvo Buses.

     

    Ford should have developed their own in house program. But since that did not happen. Why not buy the engines from a world leader. And from a company that shares a Ford name plate. The Volvo group still links to Volvo Cars on their site. Not sure why Ford did not sell their heavy trucks to Volvo but I doubt it fit in to the Volvo Heavy Mantra. Which for the most part a complete Volvo unit with no out sourced engines. Mack fit that bill perfectly.

    The point of the posts was to show that there are other options besides Navi. And the alternatives are not all bad and could actually be a benefit.

     

    No need for those monster 7 liter or even 6 liter plus Diesels . The 5.5 Volvo has equivalent or better HP and torque than engines a 1/3 rd larger. In much more reliable and durable package.

     

    Unlike Road diesels the 5.5 Is designed for acceleration under max load and to do it as quick as possible and maintain full power under load for hours on end. These are no slow up revving units Volvo is trying to build Diesels for marine applications that traditionally was the domain of high power gas engines.

     

    A 500Hp 850 Ft lbs of torque diesel would be akin to strapping a rocket booster on the back if used in a light or medium truck. Volvo designed these engine to replace Hi power Gasoline engines in performance applications. Such as fast high power and jet boats. The engines can not be the heavy lumbering diesels of the past as they are meant to replace the small and big block gas V8's in package of similar weight with more power faster acceleration better fuel mileage and in a much safer manner.

     

    These new gen of smaller diesels are ideally suited to Medium and light truck applications. Much better I think than some of the stuff that is actually turning up in the trucks.

     

    The Volvo 5.5L 435 Hp could feasibly be up rated to to nearly 500Hp and 849 Ftlbs of torque in the truck applications with out loosing any durability.

     

    That is only a 15% increase in power. And that is on the low end of the 15-20% derating we see in Volvo diesels when going from road to Marine applications.

     

    All of Volvo's new diesels are DOHC 4 Valve engines. Even the large 12 liter units

     

    If Ford released a Diesel super duty with 475Hp and near 800 Ftlbs of torque in it (expandable to 500 and 850), it pretty much would put the Light-Medium truck segment on it's ear.

    And send every one scrambling ,they would be playing catch up for the better part of a decade. And any dreams that Yota had of ever being a major player in the heavy P/U segment in near future would pretty much be dashed right then and there.

     

    Using a Volvo diesel should not be an issue. As it would add thousands upon thousands of sales of what are other wise a relatively low volume engines.

     

    It would give Volvo heavy some valuable experience out side of Rigs and construction equipment in NA. Right Now NA is screaming for a smaller mid sized Transit bus. Road certifying the 5.5 would make the transition in to a medium sized bus a snap or the higher load end of the Medium truck market. Which right now is dominated by Navi.

    With Nova and Prevost already in place in NA the mechanism is there to market just such a bus here in NA.

     

    It could be a win win for both companies.

     

    Ford would receive about the best mid displacement diesel on the planet. Volvo group would get a massive injection of cash flow. And it would help open the doors to the heavy medium truck segment in NA.

     

    Ford either needs to In house the Program or get the best units available. It would not take long for the Volvo diesels to earn a rep better then Cummings used in the Dodge.

     

    The Europeans are literally years ahead of us in Diesel development. And of them Volvo is leading the pack.
