  1. Wow, why did they even bother with power windows in that model? :hysterical:

Things like power windows and seats, I can do without. But no radio?? Hell no!!!!!!

The engineering and manufacturing cost for hand cranked windows given the rather small market would make them more expensive than just throwing in power windows.

  2. I ordered my 2012 explorer on 07/05 and the stock answer was 6 to 8 weeks. Has anybody who ordered it in the May timeframe recieved theirs yet ? It is interesting to note that ford's website does not have the new model listed but are taking orders for the model.

They want clear the 2011 inventory, before they update the web page to the 2012 vehicle.

  3. This I feel is part of the problem with Explorer sales in my market. Most dealers are way over-stocked with Limited units, with a very rare (at least locally) XLT model here and there. Think they'd move much quicker here if they had a little more variety on their lots.

Funny, it is just the opposite here. A 4WD Limited can barely get unloaded from the truck before it is sold. There is no shortage of XLT and FWD. I bought a loaded Limited 4WD and it has only rolled of the factory line 2 weeks before and had only been at the dealer for a couple of days.

  4. Nothing should have a 4 speed auto at this stage of the game I don't care if it was 17K or not. Put the 6 speed in there and sell it at 19k or something. Even with that ancient engine a 6 speed would really make a difference.

You might want to pass that onto Toyota as well. The Corolla, Matrix and Yaris still have 4 speeds.

  5. I wouldn't say it's smartphone simple, largely because it doesn't work as quickly or reliably. Actually, consumers use to a very responsive touchscreen are going to find this system very cumbersome and ancient.

The design of the quadrant system is pretty straightforward, but in practice it's not as simple or elegant as it sounds. There are often 3 back-up interfaces to juggle in the event one task is obscuring the other, however many heavily used features are only available on the touchscreen, which can be confusing to manage if you are not use to your options. So this constant re-orientation takes some getting use to when you're driving. To be honest, I have to say it took me about a month to feel like I knew how to use the UI effectively, but I certainly new how to use the system right away. In the end, the only real advantage to MyFord Touch has been the instrument cluster enhancements and the steering wheel controls, for me that is by far the biggest advancement in UI I've seen from ANY car-maker, although it's still very layered. I'm absolutely certain I would be happier with the system (now that I'm use to it) if it simply moved quickly and the display was bigger with bolder icons. I'd also like to see the climate control quadrant moved closer to the driver or more controls added to the instrument cluster.

Personally I wouldn't want it to be hyper-sensitive like an iPhone, I think that the positive force is a good thing considering you are reaching out while the car is moving and sometimes a little bump can move your finger. The touch sensitive nature of the screen allows it be used with gloves on. On the iPhone that can be a little annoying in the winter, granted you can't do a whole lot with gloves on, but I can't even swipe to answer a call.

  6. So far, the wife and I have been swapping between the new cars so I hadn't driven an entire tank out of the Explorer myself until this week. I had bumped the tire pressure up to 51 psi halfway through the last tank. This was a drastic difference in handling compared to the 40 psi it came with. At first, I wanted to put it right back down but I got used to it quickly and left it alone. This time around, I managed a combined average of 27.48 mpg in a base model 4WD. My single trip best was 28.5 mpg over 65 miles.

You are rolling on about $1200 to $1600 worth of rubber, why would you over inflate the tires to squeeze a couple of extra MPG. An under inflated tire will not apply the proper pressure to the center part of the tread and the edges will wear out before the center. An over inflated tire will have so much pressure, that the center will bulge and wear prematurely.

Lets say that the properly inflated tires are good for 50K miles and the over inflated tires only last 25K. To cover the same 50K miles you are going to spend $1200 more, That would buy 300+ gallons of gas or enough to drive 6000+ miles. Now lets throw in a couple of other factors, the ride is terrible and you don't have the proper contract patch so your braking is compromised. Stick with the manufacturers recommend pressure or maybe 2 PSI above.

  7. Just like ford the latest american made index is out and the f-150 didn't even come close 55% american content cheap, cheap, cheap!!!

I am so disappointed in Ford for this one, the F-150 should be about as American as you can get. I just bought a 2011 Explorer, it is 85% domestic content with an American engine, transmission and it is of course assembled in Chicago.

  8. I understand that dealers can take 2012 Explorer orders now and production will start in July. I'm wondering:

    1. If I order now, when could I realistically expect to get one? September?

    2. Which is likely to have less quality issues: A late production 2011 or an early production 2012. I'm hoping 2012 will fix some of the issues I've been reading about with the 2011.

Mine was built on May 14th and I don't seem to have the A-pillar rattle and then of course the other big issue is MFT which is a software problem. Mine came with version 2.8 which has been very good overall except it can be a little slow when first starting the vehicle. Mostly my issue is turning on the A/C seats when I first start the car. If I hit the icon it will sometimes take 2 or 3 seconds to respond with the beep and the icon animation, at first I would try again thinking I missed the icon which would result in the seats going to medium instead of high, now I just wait.

I doubt that there will be a material difference unless you are looking at a 2.0 Ecoboost. The beauty of software problems is that they are easily upgradable and I bought the 2011 fully expecting the Explorer, like a fine wine to improve with age.

This does lead into an interesting question for Michael Karesh, owner of TrueDelta. Is a trip to upgrade the MFT the same as a other types of repairs. Unlike any other warrantee work I bought the vehicle fully expecting and maybe even looking forward to upgrading. Hopefully 3.0 will be user installable, I understand some of the early upgrades required the dealer to do since the OS had to be wiped and reinstalled from scratch.

  9. The Escape volume is the real story IMO, although I'm not surprised because it's the same price as a midsize sedan. The Flex and MKT need to call it already.

The Escape has been a big seller for a while, the new Explorer is a real winner, up 134%. Fair disclosure, I bought a loaded Explorer Limited on Saturday. I just went in to get some new tires for my wife's car and I purchased a new Explorer for myself. She did get the new tires.

  10. Can't quite logically figure out how a floor mat trapping a pedal at say 70mph could cause a car to accelerate to about 100 mph....

You're stuck behind somebody in the slow lane and are blocked from the faster lane. As soon as it clears you gun it to get up to speed and jump into the faster lane. Voila you are at or near wide open throttle.

  11. I have a John Deere 2520 Loader/Backhoe that weights about 3500 lbs, if I get an Aluma 18" trailer that weights 1100 lbs I would have a combined weight of 4600 lbs. Technically the Explorer would be able to haul this but not much else including passengers in the vehicle. If I get the trailer it would be for occasional use, do you think that the Explorer is practical at this load or should I consider an F-150. I do like the 7 seat option and I don't really want the poor fuel economy that would come with an Expedition.

  12. I noticed that it did not have the M plates nor was there was a kill switch on the dash, it looked production ready to me. The driver also didn't strike me as a engineer type, more administrative.

I have to say it was a very striking car. It immediately attracted my attention as being unusual and very European looking with the short rear overhang. When it pulled up I had been outside for about 3 1/2 hours in 40 degree temperatures and I did not dress for the occasion. If I hadn't been freezing I probably would have tried to sit in it and ask more questions.

  13. Yes in civil court, but there could be people going to jail, at least if this applies to Japan. I know leaders of companies in Japan have gone to jail over similar issues.

I just hope this turns out to be not true or else we will have more liberals asking for more regulation to stop the tyrants.

A criminal case can be initiated against individuals within the company who are criminal culpable, but not the company itself. Companies can only subject to civil actions.

  14. There could be folks going to jail.

Also in Asian countries the CEO typically falls on his sword, but this will be the grandson of the founder. I was impressed with the grandsons response to the congressional hearings. I thought that was handled well, we will see going forward.

One more thing to keep in mind, innocent till proven guilty, lets hope for the company they are. I want Ford to stomp them, I just want it to be because we are better, not because Toyota is worse.

Innocent until proven guilty only applies in the criminal court system. In the civil court system you are basically guilty until proven innocent. Once a lawsuit has been filed the defendant must prove their innocents, while the plaintiff has a much lower standard called a "Preponderance of evidence" instead of "Beyond a reasonable doubt".
