  1. I have a company issued Blackberry. "Hate" is just too soft of a word to describe my feelings about it.

My company issued BB was replaced by and an iPhone 4 and I have to say that in terms of most of the functions I need to complete it is a step backwards. The iPhone isn't compatible with half the work related functions we use whereas the BB worked with everything. I never thought I would say this but I want my Blackberry Bold back. I just wish I could have a work issued S3 because I love my personal phone.

  2. It's precisely why I did it. I figure you fellas can :beatdeadhorse: then I can :beatdeadhorse:

And pretty much if I feel like talking about something I will, just like everyone else here does.

But not to worry guys, I've personally talked at least 6 people that I know of for sure out of buying a Ford in the last seven months since I got rid of the Focus. Possibly more that I don't know about. Two of them were considering a Focus. How much money you figure that's worth? Talking works.

Oh I am certain Ford is hurting missing those 6 sales.../sarcasm

I am certain that over the last few years that my glowing recommendations have swayed at least number of people into Fords, talking works both ways. By all means though continue to have your little pity party and be happy in your car that I even refuse to have as a rental.

  3. After nine pages on the topic of the Escape has been recalled due to pinched fuel lines there is still something to say on the matter? If you guys haven't worked out just about every angle of such a limitied scope topic after 2 pages you really need help. But please feel free to. . .

    :beatdeadhorse:

    Pot meet kettle

Seriously who is the person still harping on about a car they don't even own anymore? Yep that's right it is you. Let it go, we all know you had problems with your Focus and that you think your Corolla is the greatest thing since sliced bread. We just don't want to hear about it anymore.

Take your own advice and stop :beatdeadhorse:

  4. Blackhorse should leave the derailing to me............make a point to drive the 2.0.....little pocket rocket.....and more refined than the 1.6....

I hope to have the opportunity to drive the 2.0 sometime. I was lucky that I even got to test drive the 1.6L, it was the only Escape they had left and right after I got back the dealership got a call from a person who wanted to know if they still had it in stock and once they told him it was still available the person told them he was driving there to purchase it. Turns out the guy lived a good hour away.

  5. What I should have done was sent the letter back to a Ford with a response that said

    Dear Ford

There is no way that my dual clutch could possibly be a shuddery rattling annoying hunk of crap because you sent your almighty Engineer down here from Detroit. He test drove the car for all of two miles (which means down the highway 1 mile in front of the dealership and back) and proclaimed the car to be in perfect working order and that the dealership should make no futher effort to fix or deal with my issues. Perhaps you should check with your engineer before dispatching these letters. If he has proclaimed the car to be in good working order than how could it possibly need another (as in second) software patch to address the driveability issues? Clearly I didn't have a clue what I was talking about when I kept telling you that the car was shuddering and rattling and basically the most annoying car I have ever owned. That couldn't be it could it? Oh wait you've sent me a letter that seems to address that very point of contention. It seems that in fact I was right all along. Oh well, not matter. I have summarily traded that nightmare for a Corolla with which I must tell you I could not be happier with. It is a fantastic car. Perhaps you should call Toyota and ask them how they do it.

lol Now that would have been fun.

Wait I didn't realize this was another thread about how much you hated your Focus...

You don't even own the car anymore yet you take every opportunity to complain about it. Move on.

    Back to the Escape

Last week Tuesday I had the opportunity to take a new Escape 1.6L AWD for a test drive while the Explorer was getting an oil change and the passenger headlight replaced (wife pulled too far forward in the garage) and I have to say that it is an impressive little motor for such a hefty car. If our boat wasn't as big, I wouldn't mind owning the Escape instead of the Explorer.

  6. You're right, the GM 6-speed in the Five Hundred arrived with the 2008 (Taurus) update, the Fusion V6 got it first. The Five Hundy had the Aisin unit.

Wrong on a few counts. GM and Ford Jointly developed the 6F transmission, but individually developed their own software for them. So it is not accurate on any level to call it the GM 6speed. Generally it is stated that Fords software tuning was better than GMs and my experience with both sets of programming mirrors this. Also the Fusion was not the first car to get the 6F. When the Fusion debuted it used an Aisin unit which I believe the MKZ and Fusion 3.5L still uses. The Edge was the first Ford with the 6F. The Taurus also got the 6F in 2008 when the 500 was redesigned. The Fusion didn't get the 6F till 2010 when it was redone and it was only on the 2.5L and 3.0L and in this iteration had teething problems.

  7. Your numbers are wrong. Mine is 19/27, same as my Taurus 24 valver, but I can get much bettter fuel mileage on my Boxster in cruise control than my Taurus. Tops highway on my Taurus in cruise at about 70mph is 30, and Boxster in fifth gear about 35. Of course the Boxster weighs 2770 and my Taurus about 3300 or so. Most other Boxster ownerss I've talked to get about same on highway with cruise on and in fifth gear. The S for my year 18/26. My reference is my sticker that was on car when new. Owner's manual says same.

Umm no they are right and you are wrong. If you look closely you will see that each Boxster variant that I listed is blue and underlined...in the world of the internet that generally means they are a hyperlink and if you just so happen to click on them you will see that it takes you to the EPAs official website. Unlike you I provide proof for my claims. Also it still stands that if you are able to beat the MPG ratings for your current car that the ST would do the same. You can ignore the new ratings all you want but at the end of the day I am going to listen to the EPA more than a man who drivels about his Porsche Boxster.

  8. No, the new Taurus 2.0EB gets 32mpg highway with slushbox and 800 more pounds of weight. And the new Boxsters that are much faster get as good or better fuel mileage too. And both models have considerably more hp. My Boxster has gotten as much as 35mpg highway and it has no latest electronic fuel saving controls. I've averaged as high as 28mpg in combined driving if I lay off the high revs. I'm still not completely sold on EB as fuel mileage increases seem marginal at best.

    2001 Porsche Boxster 2.7L manual 17city/25hwy

    2001 Porsche Boxster 2.7L auto 16city/23hwy

    2001 Porsche Boxster S 3.2L manual 17city/23hwy

    2001 Porsche Boxster S 3.2L auto 16city/23hwy

If you can beat the EPA estimates by as much as you claim, doesn't it stand to reason that the ST should be able to do the same?

  9. I have to add that taking a 4200 lbs car from 0-60MPH in 7.0 seconds flat is respectable. I was looking at a few turbo charged , much lighter weight cars, and even the New Mercedes C class which was on Motorweek lastnight (I hate Motorweek) and it was in the 8 second range. Also the Taurus doing a 15 second quarter mile is decent. I also looked at my EPA window Sticker on my 2013 Limited and it had 19 City/29 Highway compared to Car and Drivers 18 City/26 Highway. Think they will report a retraction....NOT!

FYI...drove my car the first 125 miles and filled up to check mileage.....28 MPG! Wahooo! I love my baby!

C/D Taurus test car had AWD so the number they reported was correct, however they admittedly could have presented that more clearly.

Also a FWD Taurus would scoot to 60 a few tenths quicker than an AWD one.

  10. Not a huge difference however if you consider the entire bottom surface area an extra 1/2" will create more drag. All I know is my 2011 is a champ in deep snow conditions and you would be surprised what the thing can get through. I do like sitting higher even if it might impact handling compared to a lower slung vehicle. I don't really feel the old Escape was dated like say an older Taurus is dated because Ford did keep improving it's power trains and technology. It was time for a change and I don't think anyone is debating that the Escape could go on without being redesigned. Some of us wish that the new design would have been more evolutionary then revolutionary, however with the whole One Ford thing going on it is unlikely that we will ever see smaller vehicles designed in North America for the North American market again in the future. It is a bit ironic however since the North American market is what is keeping Ford going these days.

This implies that the new Escape is somehow less than satisfactory for the North American market which is simply ridiculous. All indicators seem to say that the new Escape easily satisfies everything the old Escape did. Styling is subjective, and we all know you don't like the styling of the new Escape. I can guarantee that if the new Escape were a box on wheels like you want that it would still have less ground clearance than the old Escape, fuel efficiency gains have to come from somewhere and reducing ground clearance is an easy way to accomplish some gains in efficiency.

  11. SSSsssss dull boring mundane old Mondeo anodyne front end styling will ensure it will be an absolute sales flop in Europe just like the dull Probe, Puma, Cougar that nobody brought in Europe. Definitely would not buy this bland rendering.

Only close to the classic warm friendly charm of the current Mustang will pick up where the Capri left of in Europe a massive sales success No1 best selling sports coupe.

200,000 UK Cortina sales good, Cortina's Grandson 20,000 Mundane dull Mondeo UK sales in 2011 not so good for Ford profits. Now every man and his dog outsells the Mondeo in the UK so why Mondeo the Mustangs front end are Ford on a death sales wish it will end up with Aston Martin type sales numbers in the UK sweet bugger all?

2012 Q1 Best selling UK large cars with UK sale chart position (With added 1979 Cortina sales).

    No18. RWD Mercedes E Class - 7,111

    No 30. RWD BMW 5 Series - 5,011

    UK Top 361 sales rankings Q1 2012.

    LINK

Ford UK sold 20,621 all models from Ka up to the big Galaxy in April 2012, let down mainly by the lowly positioned No 22 Ford Mondeo. Now the Mustang is going to get a boring Mondeo front end, even Ford's old sports coupe the Capri rarely never left the UK best selling top 10, it is the only Sports car ever to make it into the UK top 10 best seller as far as l am aware unless you know better? Mondeo the Cortina's hapless Grandson never makes the UK top 10 this year or last year. Folk seem to be buying quality BMW & Mercedes Benz RWD cars in the large car sector these days, in the past these would never had made the on to the UK top 50 best cars list, today they both make it into the UK Top 10 Best selling cars list in 2012, l wonder what car has failed Ford?

Toyota kings of boring will be selling the GT 86 for £10,000 ($16,000) less than this rendering of the Mondeo Stang in the UK. Which car will sell the best when dull styling becomes king on both? Warm styling of the current Mustang would have made the choice easy to buy, it's kept Toyota and Honda's out of the muscle car market, will the GT86 be the Camry of the muscle car market as Ford drops classic styling to join them with dull styling?

Sad to say this dull rendering from Mustang Daily is not for me, l think it will be another sports car Probe/Puma/Cougar massive sale flop if it comes to Europe, should have sent us the current Mustang. So l would rather see Ford kept it in the USA don't bring it to Europe, and spend the money used to bring it to Europe invested elsewhere in the Ford Mo Co.

The cold anodyne Pontiac G8 was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread did it ever out sell the classic styled Mustang? G8 ended up with 300 sales a month, and help to finish off the Pontiac brand for good. So how will Ford ever hope to sell an expensive an anodyne Mustang in Europe with sky high fuel prices. It will appeal on no grounds what so ever just like the G8.

Sorry for sounding so negative here guys, but l just can't see this Mustang Daily News Stang that looks like a cold anodyne Mondeo with a squashed roof rendering appealing to anyone on this side of the pond, Folk that are cash strapped will go for a cheaper GT86 or if they have the cash to splash a BMW M3, maybe one of those very rare Mondeo private buyers (Mondeo's are nearly all brought buy fleet/rentalls). They might be temporally interested, but will end up ends buy a Mondeo diesel instead because it has more headroom. Ford's current awesome classic Mustang would have been a massive hit in comparison, when compared to a dull squashed mundane Mondeo front ended shaped Stang that will appeal to nobody at all in Europe sad to say.

Compare 1980,1990, 2000 and 2011 sales for the top 10 cars sold in the UK

    For 1980

    1. Cortina (RWD)

    2. Escort (RWD then FWD when the new style was released)

    3. Mini (FWD)

    4. Marina (RWD)

    5. Allegro (FWD)

    6. Fiesta (FWD)

    7. Granada (RWD)

    8. Capri (RWD)

    9. Cavalier (RWD)

    10. Chevette (RWD)

    7/10 were RWD

    For 1990

    1. Fiesta (FWD)

    2. Escort (FWD)

    3. Cavalier (FWD)

    4. Sierra (RWD)

    5. Astra (FWD)

    6. Metro (FWD)

    7. 200 (FWD)

    8. Nova (FWD)

    9. 205 (FWD)

    10. Orion (FWD)

    1/10 were RWD

    For 2000

    1. Focus (FWD)

    2. Astra (FWD)

    3. Fiesta (FWD)

    4. Corsa (FWD)

    5. 206 (FWD)

    6. Vectra (FWD)

    7. Mondeo (FWD)

    8. Megane (FWD)

    9. Clio (FWD)

    10. Golf (FWD)

    0/10 were RWD

    For 2011

    1. Fiesta (FWD)

    2. Focus (FWD)

    3. Corsa (FWD)

    4. Golf (FWD)

    5. Astra (FWD)

    6. Insignia (FWD)

    7. Polo (FWD)

    8. 3 Series (RWD)

    9. Qashqai (FWD/AWD)

    10. Mini (FWD)

    1/10 were RWD

Your whole notion that RWD would increase sales is simply misguided and completely ignores reality. If you look at the sales over the past few decades Ford seems to be consistently the company that has best responded to the market seeing as they are the company that always has 2 out of the top 3 cars in sales in the UK.

  12. Ford Edge/Lincoln MKX - made in Ontario and more expensive to buy here even though our dollar has been hovering above parity with the U.S. dollar for a while now.

Don't give the Canadian dollar too much credit, for the last 3 or so months it has been on average slightly below parity. 2011 onward the USD has generally held stronger value to the CAD despite a few month period late last year where the CAD was above parity slightly.

  13.

For what it is worth I agree with Nick on this one. Since our Explorer has received the update it has been working so much better. I don't deny that some people may still be facing issues but I feel that there are more people who do not still have issues. Only the people who have issues still are going to go out of their way to say something, someone who has a system working properly doesn't have the need to go out of their way to say that their system is working well.

  14. Ford is sandbagging and/or the others are lying! Toyota is famous for overstating power, they got in trouble for that a while back.

I know Toyota has been in trouble for this in the past but when it comes to their 3.5L V6 that thing is a beast and if anything is probably underrated in experience. When I get the rare, rare chance of getting V6 Camry as a rental I find it sort of negates some of the terribleness of that car. If anything the 2.0L Turbo I4 in the Sonata/Optima is grossly overrated as that thing is a dog given its hp/tq ratings. For comparison sake, the 2.0L Turbo that was in the old Passat or that is in the CC is an absolute beast and it 'only' has 200 hp.

  15.

Except it's not. It's down about 30 HP from most of it's competitors top engine offerings.

Despite that it will still post acceleration times that are comparable to its competition. As I mentioned already if the 2.0L Ecoboost can scoot the Edge to sixty in the 7 second range it will have no issue scooting the lighter and smaller Fusion to sixty in the 6 second range. You are so caught up in hp numbers that you ignore this fact.

  16. It is being held back as to not steal the MKZs thunder.

Like Richard said, please provide proof of that statement. As it is the 2.0L Ecoboost will be a motor that is in the same league as competitor top engines and that is ultimately what matters. Do I hope that they bring out an ST model later on, most certainly however their priority right now ought to be on the mainstream models and that is exactly what they are doing.

  17. Oh I don't doubt that the Fusion is being held back to make the MKZ look better, but that is not always a good idea when your mainstream competition is offering more powerful engines.

You act as if the Fusion 2.0L Ecoboost is going to be slow...if that motor can haul the much larger and heavier Edge to 60 in the 7 second range then I have no doubt it will be able to haul the much smaller and lighter Fusion to 60 in the 6 second range which is par for the class.

  18. Please don't present MT as an example of what reviewers should be like, they are always

injecting their own contrived standards into articles, usually to get the outcome they want.

I am not talking about their reviews. I merely mentioned them as an example of an automotive publication that subscribes to the generally accepted classification of vehicles. Arguably it is the only thing that MT can get correct.

  19. Everyone has their own classification system. There are few cars where there is only one thing someone could, and does, consider it. When you say "generally accepted," you mean "generally accepted by you."

Presenting sales data is about showing how a car sold compared to a competitor, so if it has direct competitors that clearly fall in different classes, there's nothing "wishy-washy" about presenting it in both. It just makes the comparison data more accessible for whatever car you're hoping to compare it to. Especially if, in the subjective assignment of cars to one class or another, it ends up only in the category you'd disagree with -- and in each case I have a car listed in multiple charts, there are plenty of people on either side. (With no doubt a significant "why is this such a big deal?" contingent.)

No I mean generally accepted by the automotive world. Publications such as MT, C/D, Insideline, etc have no qualms or difficulties in subscribing in a consistent classification model. If you wish to ignore what the majority of the automotive world does then that is your call.

  20. Things are never that cut and dry. Why would someone not cross-shop the Edge and Equinox/Terrain? What is so different between the two?

As I had said already before, comparison can and will be made between different vehicles. For one off the top of my head the Equinox is much narrower than the Edge which means that the chances of three abreast in the rear is less likely. Also sales figures aren't a guide for someone shopping for a new car. You have the ability to be decisive about your classifications of cars. Putting a car in two different categories is wishy-washy at best. Subscribe to the generally accepted categorizations that exist in the market already.

  21. I am making a number of classification changes starting in the new year, and have been weighing whether it's possible to create a second SUV class between compact and full-size. Under this arrangement it would be:

    Compact: Escape, CR-V, etc.

    Midsize: Edge, Grand Cherokee, etc.

    Large crossover: Explorer, Traverse, etc.

    Large SUV: Expedition, Tahoe, etc.

There would still be overlap, of course, probably even more than before, but it would reduce the size difference between the biggest and smallest vehicles listed in the same class.

    This would be more logical.

Compact: CRV; Rav4; CX5; Escape; Equinox; Terrain; Tuscon; Sportage; Tiguan; Liberty; Patriot; etc

Midsize: Edge; Grand Cherokee; CX7; Murano; Venza; Crosstour; Santa Fe; Sorento; etc

Large CUV: Traverse; Acadia; Explorer; Highlander; Pilot; Flex; CX9; Veracruz; etc

Large SUV: Expedition; Tahoe; Suburban; Yukon/XL; Sequoia; Armada; etc
