I've had 3 Tauruses and my brother-in-law has one. My '98 front coil spring broke at 216,000 miles, which I didn't think was bad, living in Ohio and all the salt on the roads here. My brother-in-law's 2002 Taurus rear coil broke and blew out a perfectly good tire. I went to a local mechanic to get the heat shield fixed in the drive shaft hump where they now run the exhaust pipe on my wife's 2004 Taurus. When they put it up on the rack to fix the heat shield, they noticed a rear coil was broken, and my wife has been driving it that way for the last two months, but luckily, it didn't blow the tire. When I was there, the mechanic had three other Tauruses there waiting on back ordered rear strut/coil spring assemblys. When we took the car to him tonight, he told me another customer with a Taurus came in to get work done on his AC, and when he backed up to leave, after the AC repair, the customer felt something rubbing, and continued backing up and blew out his front tire with a broken coil spring. I looked at the broken coil spring, and it looked like they had just replaced it. No rust, or weak point, just a broken spring. I also have a 2008 Taurus, which I like a whole lot. Other than broken coil springs, I love Tauruses, but since there are so many broken coil springs at this one mechanic, I was wondering. Is anyone else having these problems? I know Ford had a recall on coil springs until 2002, but it doesn't seem to me that they have the problem fixed. Is this cheap Chinese steel? Any responses will be greatly appreciated. This is going to cost me about $450.00. Thanks.
