There is a market for a small truck-no doubt. I would think a Transit Connect pickup would fit the bill nicely. Very different in size than
the F150 so would not hurt sales, and would be funk styling-bringing more people to the Ford brand. I drive Fords and am not buying an F150. A step ladder to get in the bed? Deal breaker for me, too big-not remotely useable.

No regular cab 4x4? There goes a good chunk of the working truck crowd as well as the off road play
tuck people. Seems crazy to me to eliminate swaths of buyers from the Ranger.

Transit Connect based pick up is the way to go. Right size, a good Ranger replacement. 2 or 4 door, plenty of engines available. All the parts to make it are already in Ford 'basket'. I would buy a 2 door, AWD if it happens, diesel would be amazing!
