  1. Ugh, I thought the issues were resolved in the 2010's, but apparently not. Anyway, I'm torn what to do about the transmission in my 2009 Escape.

I've taken it in for the PCM flash, which did not help. I took it back to the dealership, complaining of the hard shifts after revs, intermittent jerky shifts, and general roughness of the transmission. This particular Ford dealership had it for several days and never called me back. I took a surprise stop by, and it appeared my Escape had never moved from when I dropped it off. I asked a tech, and they claimed they tested it thoroughly for 15 minutes, and they didn't find a thing wrong with it. They never even wrote up any kind of paperwork, so I wonder if it was ever truly looked at. I was not happy with this dealership and won't be going back.

This transmission is driving me nuts though, because it will sometimes have a pretty smooth day, which clouds everything up. It seems I get the worst shift flare and jerk after the car hasn't been driven for a couple days. The mileage is at 54,000 now, and my time is running out.

I otherwise really like the vehicle, so I don't just want to dump it really. Has anyone had complete success to a smooth, competent transmission after repeated complaints to Ford, or is this a lost cause? I feel like this problem is being covered up, as my local Ford dealer is claiming they're unfamiliar with the problem. Yet, my cousin who was a mechanic at a local non-Ford shop claimed there was a never-ending stream of 2009 Fusions and Escapes for shifting problems. He said very few felt the problem was resolved after the PCM flash also.

Anyway, I'm ready to take another swing at resolving this issue, so what is the best route for getting success? Should I complain to Ford customer service, rather than just taking it to another careless dealership?

Not sure if you misunderstood your cousin or not but the 6F35 wasn't used in the Fusion till the 2010MY which was a midyear release in the summer of 2009.

  2. I have read all the "flat towing" issue, and even got the "flat tow" recall.. (updated instructions :) )

If the clutch remains "disengaged" when dolley towing, then you are correct there would be no reason to remove drive shaft.

    Can you confirm that?

    Thx Y2KPSD

Yes, the clutch is electric but since your engine is going to be OFF there's no way for the clutch to engage.

You can actually disable the 4WD rearend clutch by pulling the fuse marked for "4WD Module", I believe it's F11 IIRC. The only catch is that the "wrench" dash icon will light up and therefore hide or mask any other problems that may come up. You can gain a little MPG this way.

  3. I have a 2009 Ford Escape AWD.

I would like to disconnect / remove the rear drive shaft, and dolley tow... behind a motor home.

Then I would like to drive in 2WD mode (with rear drive line still removed).....

Can I do this... (keeping the driver shaft seperate till home in winter)????

    Thx Y2KPSD

If your going to use a dolley, it wouldn't matter if the driveshaft is removed or not. You could remove it but what's your reason for doing so? Under normal operation the driveshaft always powered or rotates and there is a electric clutch in the rearend.

The '09 Escape is advertised as flat towable but many have burned up transmissions doing so. There is a procedure change for this, one part is to reduce the ATF level.

  4. I don't see towing as a big issue with most Escape owners. KI see tons up here in NH and rarely is one pulling anything. Maybe a small trailer with a ATV/ Snowmobile or landscaping equipment. Anything larger and they are driving much larger vehicles. Wouldn't sway my a bit. But the smaller cargo area is a major factor for me and it would be a deal breaker. At that point, maybe the EX might be of interest although the third row seat just bugs me. Takes up room I'd rather use as secure storage.

Might be a smaller cargo area because is has a smaller GVW. The current Escape's load capacity is >#1000.

  5. If it means throngs of current Escape buyers find other vehicles I think Ford might. The Escape is at the top of the sales charts. The Vertrek could end up being the 96 Taurus all over again.

I know several people who are repeat Escape buyers, and I don't expect any of them will end up in a Verscape.

Correct! The so-called Escape replacement or VerTrek with a small engine, what can onr tow? Your kid's Red Flyer wagon??

  6. This one of the un-spoken results of One Ford.

No vehicle will launch "before its time". Sure there are target dates, but slipping them is not life and death,

The new Escape is a 2013MY, which means it can not be sold until after 1 Jan 2012. It seems to be on target for 1Q2012. (WAP is going to do some of the stampings and they don't have dies yet, according to a friend who works in stamping.)

A 2013MY Kuga it may be but it's nolonger a Escape as they aren't equal. Would a Escape replace an Explorer??

  7. Yeah, it'll save money if it sells. look at the new Expliorer, did they lower the engiine size? Is it less of a 4WD than it was before?

If this the way they go, the Escape like vehicle is being dropped from the lineup.

  8. Driving through Dearborn I got to see a 2013 Escape with minimal camo and not too far away a Kuga (no camo; badge on). These certainly looked identical to me, except perhaps for grill and tail (camo). There is clearly less interior space in the back (current Escape has a boxier, more SUV like, rear, as compared to the Kuga's sloping, more CUV like, rear). It did not have the "stance" of the Vertrek concept.

To my eye, the roof height looks lower than the current Escape, so I would guess that the driver seat height is lower

The question is, will current Escape buyers buy a new Kuga-Escape, with significantly different styling, less cargo volume and lower seat height ?

Not if they are smart. Is it a replacement for a V6 Escape? No way! I'm not convinced this is the future look of the Escape. The literature I receive from Ford has never stated this, although I read posts in forums about this. Why would Ford replace a good seller?

  9. I'm concerned that the ecoboost won't be offered in an AWD model. I know on the Explorer and I've heard the Edge can only get the eco if you go FWD.

That could have something to do with the fact that the EcoBoost is normally paired with a beefer transaxle. The Escape uses the 6F35 and the Taurus uses the 6F50 with the bigger V6. I'm not too familiar with the EcoBoost engine lineup but the largest transaxle or the 6F55 is used in the EcoBoost powered Taurus SHO which is AWD. There might be a size limiting factor for the Escape for now.

  10. Erich,

I sympathise with you, I also unfortunately just leased a 2011 fusion sel with this defective transmison. I agree with everything you said, not only should every engineer responsible for this dangerous defective transmission be fired, their families should be forced to drive a vehicle with these awful transmissions. I have under 1600 miles on the vehicle, and I'm nervous to drive it. It sucks having a new car that you feel unsafe in. I tried merging into traffic after not driving the car for two days, and I almost got rearended, the car revved to redline with no acceleration until the car jolted into gear, sound familiar. It amazes me that consumer reports reccomends the Fusion with such a high number of transmission problems. I'm sure that these issues will have to be adressed soon, I'm sure that these transsmisions will result in serious injuries or death if they haven't already. I brought my car to the dealer and I left it overnight. Of course they couldn't duplicate the problem and they haven't heard of these transmission problems. I'm sure their told not to mention any problems to customers. I know there is a law firm investigating these transmissions in the Fusions, but it wouldn't hurt to contact them regarding your wifes escape being that it has the same defective transmission. The law firm's number is 866-981-4800, again they are investigating complaints about fusion transmissions, but again being they have the same garbage transmission it can't hurt to contact them.Good luck!

The 6F35 was first introduced in the '09 Escape with problems and still has the same problems today! This 6-speed transaxle's R&D was a joint venture between Ford and GM, yet the GM version doesn't have these problems as far as I know.

  11. 1. The original 5 digit code can be retrieved on a sticker where is the junction box (i think it'S a panel on the passenger side of the center console) not sure of that but heard somewhere.

    2. absolutely! You can install it yourself but be prepared to spend big bucks (550$ worth of parts from the dealer)

    3. i would not take any chance on that and go to the dealer to get the cleaner they recommend and sell for that purpose.

    enjoy your new ride!

I have seen posts before asking about the 5 digit code but some said it was a sticker on the PATS module which is under the bottom cover of the steering colume. Nobody has ever posted that it was found there though or any other place. The dealer can retrieve the code with their IDS(computer).

  12. I think I agree about just going with 2wd for the few or no times I'd need 4wd, especially living out here where the winter temp is usually in the 50's. EPA says 2wd is 34/31 and 4wd is 29/27 which isn't 25% but still enough to be significant and almost negate the reasons for getting a hybrid. Thanks

Get much snow in San Francisco or Jupiter, FL?? Depends where you live or where you go if 4WD is worth the extra money or loss of MPG.

  13. Wptski -- Thanks for all the replies and helpful info.

I have another problem with my Escape transmission that I'd like to confirm is an actual issue before I contact the dealer.

When using cruise control and holding the accelerate button to get up to speed ( and then releasing), my transmission gets stuck at 3000-4000 rpm's for about 2 seconds, then downshifts. It's a really delayed downshift with cruise control that I've never noticed on a car...isn't the process supposed to be nearly instantaneous?

I've never that one but have noticed if you just hold the button down will cause a downshift at times.

  14. I can confirm that after having the PCM reflash for awhile now, the shifting actually seems worse! I've gone from absolutely loving the vehicle to now worrying constantly about driving it (I feel like the transmission is going to outright fail right out of the 60k warranty). Not to mention, the city shifting is actually making me slightly motion sick.

So, apparently my Escape passed the load test when they reflashed it. Does that mean they're not going to provide further repairs to the transmission, or should I just take it back and complain some more?

I've bragged up the latest Ford vehicles to everyone repeatedly and now almost feel embarrassed for having this issue. With Ford's recent quality strides, I'd never think their new 6-speed transmission with great reviews would have these problems.

So, if I take it back to the dealer, what do you expect they'll do this time? Have they been instructed by Ford to start transmission replacement components?

Also....the shifting really seems the worst when the car has been sitting cold for a day or so. After driving it several hours, it doesn't feel all that bad. Does this information help narrow down what the problem could be?

All you can do is take it back and complain. Nobody knows what they'll. Ford normally holds their hand on the complex problems. It depends, they might authorize a new transmission right away or it might be a long drawn out affair.

  15. I took my 09 Escape to the dealer for the transmission issues with 46,400 miles. He told me that it was officially recalled by Ford; I don't think this is true? Just a TSB was issued, correct?

They wrote up the job as "RECALL 10B15C - PCM REPROGRAM"

Anyway, after this was done, the bad 1-2 shift has disappeared when the transmission is warm. However, in its place are bad 2-3 or 3-4 shifts, especially when the transmission is cold. The shifts just have a slight jolting feel, and I doubt it should be this way. I think I'm going to ask them to test drive a 2010 to see how smooth it is.

Anyway, has anyone else continued to experience the shift flare or slow shifts when accelerating slow & steady AFTER getting the new PCM flash 10B15C? How long does it take for the transmission to learn and adapt before I call the dealer back and complain that it didn't help?

    I'm torn what to do...

Also, I have the transmission "hoot" noise from a stop, everytime. I see there is a TSB for it. Where can I read this?

It was refered to as a Customer Satisfaction Program and not a TSB. Since you have over 7,000 miles, they should have performed the load test and if that failed, they'd rebuild some clurches. Some have reported that shifting was worse after the 10B15 also. All you can do is try another dealer and/or contact Ford Customer Service.

    10B15B means reprogramed only

10B15C means reprogramed, load tested and passed

10B15D means reprogramed, load test failed and clutches were replaced

The "hoot" was first believed to be a 4WD only issue but now they claim that it's in the FWD vehicles caused be the transaxle drive chain. It will only reduce the sound at best and some that have it done say that it just came back after a short time.

The funny thing is that if it's the drive chain, why does it stop when you pull the fuse marked "4WD" only? Either they are wrong or the sound is transfered all the way back to the rear end.

I don't think that I've ever seen a post anywhere from a FWD owner with the "hoot" problem.

  16. Hi all- I'm new to the forum. I recently purchased a 2010 Mariner premier, which has the standard roof-mounted Sirius antenna above the passenger's-side front seat. I really don't like how this antenna looks and would like it removed. I'm not interested in keeping the Sirius radio. My question is, if I were to pry this antenna off (carefully, of course), is there a wire running to it from the car? Or is it transmitting wirelessly? I don't want to mess with the antenna if pulling it off will leave a hole in the roof. Thanks!

    I doubt that it's wireless.

  17. Now, that you admit having access to the '09 Helms Manuals, why didn't you post the real answer to his question? Why are you playing games? Just tell the truth if that is possible for you! Stop playing games and try to help people!

That's because the manuals provides no answer to the question that I could find, only the procedure of how to do it! You need help as you take this stuff too seriousily.

  18. The 10B15 uses a certain IDS versions. The IDS version at the time of the TSB release was probably lower. If you were to have that TSB installed today, it would probably have the same effect as the 10B15 recall. As they make changes, the IDS version is updated

That TSB stated to use IDS 62.11 or higher. The 10B15 states to use IDS 65.17/66.03A or higher. Not sure why it lists two versions!

I can tell you that it also fixed another issue I had with leaving from a dead stop, a hesitation or lurch the the vehicle made is gone now.

Just to show how fast the IDS is updated, there is a new TSB dated a few days ago about a problem after using the Grade Retard button causing a bunch of DTCs. They say to reflash using IDS 67.03 or higher!

  19. What is the recommended miliage/months for a transmission fluid change/flush for a 2009 Escape Hybrid. There is nothing in the manual under the scheduled maintenance section (which I thought was strange). I saw something online that implied you should change at 30,000 miles which seemed quite low to me. My 2004 Chevy Malibu is scheduled at 150,000 miles (currently has 130,000 miles on it and runs perfectly). If it is 30,000, why does it need to be changed so often. Any help would be appreciated.

Look in the seperate Scheduled Maintanence Booklet. The Hybrid transmission is nothing like a gas version and you can't compare the two.
